Fun Little Jewel drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a Fantastic Course to Work on Approaches and Short Game. It's so much quick fun to play and Practice Scoring Shots that are needed after your drive on Longer Courses.... and you get several Ace Runs as a Bonus!

There is also adequate space to just practice and do some field work.

Cons:

It's NOT a Baby Course, but it is a short course....Bring your mids, your putters...and Maybe a 7 speed.

Other Thoughts:

I'm lucky that Tamananed is 11 minutes from my office---Out and back in under an hour, I love this place for what it is.

A Little Treasure in the Woods 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 23, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ A short but nicely varied nine holer in a wooded park

+ Good use of elevation on a few of the later holes (you go down on #6 and back up on #7). Hole #6 is really short (130' and downhill): the challenge is to land softly

+ Hole #8 is a genuine Tunnel shot; it's the most memorable hole on the course. It's only 231' to the pin, and maybe only 190' of that is in the tunnel - but because of the low ceiling, it's a great challenge from the tee

+ The basket placement on #7 is also distinct and fun. It's a short (less than 200') but uphill - and the basket is set back under a lot of low branches. So the challenge is to find the sweet spot: high enough to crest the hill, but not so high that you catch all the branches

+ "Next Hole" signs by most of the baskets are a big help, because the layout is wooded, and the direction to head next isn't always obvious

Cons:

- The first two holes are pretty nondescript, and #3 is the weakest of the nine: while the basket is protected by a big island of trees and bushes, it's only 145' - very much a hyzer pitch-and-putt

- Baskets are fine, tees and signage are nonexistent. But that's pretty typical for small municipal courses

Other Thoughts:

~ This layout makes for a fun 30 minute round. It starts off pretty dull, but then you start uncovering the little treasures during the second half

~ This is a great course for newbies. It's a "real" course layout, using woods and elevation - but it's also mostly short holes. Newbies can concentrate on their lines, instead of their length, and that helps build their games if they're ever going to go to nearby places like Tyler

~ A "3" rating feels right. It's a good little niner, with some distinctive and fun shots. Well worth a visit, and several of the holes require specific shots that make for multiple rounds

A Hometown Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Tyler East & West are close by.
-It's a fairly decent beginner's course in a nice but heavily forested community park.
-Except for #1 and #8, everything is well under 200'.
-#8 is a neat, low tunnel shot and my easy favorite of the course.
-Tees are long, rubber mats. Some were loose and curled up though and it looks to be concrete partially underneath.
-Baskets are often neatly tucked away into a patch of forest just for that extra touch.

Cons:

-Completely lacks signs and a cheap upgrade would be hanging arrows on the baskets, pointing to next tee.
-The forest paths bring random pedestrians into the course and have them wander into areas of play from #5-9.
-Mostly straightish shots.
-Popular DG phone app routes you to totally wrong place.

Other Thoughts:

tldr; Without #1 and #8, the other seven holes average 177'. Other than nearby Tyler, it's a good hometown course for beginners in an otherwise DG desert. It was a fun course that I enjoyed but my rating was probably a tad higher than normal considering there are no signs. Still, it's a better 9er than what's typically around. Reading other reviews, it might be muddy other times of the year.

I came here purely because I drove to Tyler. First thing to know, the park is on Rt232 (aka 2nd Street Pike), if a certain phone app is routing you toward a Construction Company's driveway on Churchville Rd, you're one street over southeast.

First Tee is located at 40.1801644,-75.0355677 (Google Maps) by the blue roofed pavilion and nearby is the parking lot you'd want to use too, which was pretty far back.

#1-3 are open field. #1 was the longest at 316'. On the right is forest. Basket is behind big oak tree. #2 starts in forest and back out into field. Large bush left of basket potentially shapes shot but fairly open. #3 pad is about hundred feet NE towards green roofed pavilion. Basket is a little in forest past the bench. This was a short 140' forehander for me.

#4-9 are more into the forest but fairly open within them. #4 is 190' straight but basket blocked by vegetation, can be reached with either forehand or backhand from tee. Walk straight after the basket through forest and when it opens up again, Tee#5 will be on the right. #5 is 180' with the basket amongst a cluster of trees.

Take the open path on the left of the basket. #6 starts on top of a small hill and is a short downshot. Conversely, #7 is an straight upshot. Got my disc stuck in the considerable brush on the right here. The forest paths cut across the hole at the top, watch out for passersby, and the basket is tucked into the trees behind it.

Walk several hundred feet left (SW) on that trail back towards tee#6. On the right side will be tee#8 and it's a cool tunnel shot right through the forest and the second longest hole at 230'. Basket#8 is close to tee#5 out in the open. #9 starts in the forest path north and is a short curved left shot, ending shortly before the beach volleyball court.

Starting at #2, the consecutive holes look like they can be combined for more of a challenge, but watch out for forest path pedestrians.

Solid Eagle Scout Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 29, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The disc golf course at Tamanend Park was designed and installed as an Eagle Scout project.

Quick trivia question? Who was the only US president to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout? Answer at bottom.

Scout projects run the gauntlet from awful to fairly decent. This one falls into the fairly decent category. It starts just past the picnic pavilion, plays into the woods and around and finishes over near the second picnic pavilion. It's a true pitch and putt with most of the nine holes around or below the 200' mark. There are no signs, distances are estimated. The tee pads are rubber mats which are fine for this course. The baskets are Mach II's with an orange/black number plate. Each basket has BCDGA.org on the plate. Must be the local club. There are some next tee signs as well as yellow tape on the basket which points you to the next tee pad.

Hole # 1 plays 290' across the lawn to a basket in the woods. I liked the middle-end stretch of holes from # 3 to 9. # 3 is just an little 130' annie. # 4 is probably 180' but a bush gets in your way. # 5 is about 180' throwing across a downed tree. # 6 is probably the easiest little hole on the course. It's a simple little, slightly downhill toss of 175' just needing a little hyser to grab that Ace. Then # 7 is kinda different for this course being about 200' slightly uphill to a basket buried in the trees.

# 8 is the prettiest and IMO, the signature hole here. It's a lovely tunnel shot of about 225' throwing under a canopy of trees of some type. And then the course finishes with # 9, a 200' hyser.

Cons:

Total recreational/pitch and putt distances.

No signs.

Soggy in places.

Other Thoughts:

Once more, for an Eagle Scout project, this course is pretty good. Like a few other Pennsylvania courses I've played lately, this one is overrated at 3.14. Come on, it's a fun, totally recreational pitch and putt. Yes, there are plenty of opportunities to chase those Aces but every short 9 hole course doesn't get a 3.00 rating. I think it fits very well into the average category and will gladly award it a 2.5.

Kudos to the Eagle Scout and a job well done here.

Every Beginning Has A Tamanend 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 14, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ A quick 9-hole course for those who might not have time for an entire 18 holes.
+ Quiet local neighborhood park atmosphere.
+ Almost all of the distances are short enough to enable the player to focus on getting pars and birdies.
+ Mostly wooded holes force players to practice their accuracy.
+ Every hole has an anchored rubber mat for a tee pad.

Cons:

- No signs anywhere indicating which tee you are at, which direction to throw, the distance to the tee, or par on any of the holes.
- Some holes do not even have a 'next tee' sign.
- The fairways within the wooded holes are sloppy with deadfall trees, boughs, and natural waste all over the place. For some holes, I felt as though I was walking through the rough the whole time.
- The short distances are really too short. Were it not for the trees, there would be almost no challenge to them. Higher level players will likely feel bored.
- Really thick rough areas in some spots. Keep both eyes on the disc until it stops moving and bring gardening gloves to more easily reach through the thorns!

Other Thoughts:

Tamanend Park disc golf course is a fantastic place to learn how to play the sport.

To my mind, the stars of the show are holes seven and eight.
Hole seven tees off to an uphill climb towards a basket that is all but completely surrounded by evergreen shrubs. I see it as the most challenging because of how accurate the player has to be in order to set themselves up for the next shot between the bushes.
Hole eight is almost literally a tunnel shot. The same kinds of bushes that surround pin 7 form a semi-circle barrier on the right hand side of the drive. On the left are a few trees to give the illusion of a complete tunnel.

About the course as a whole:
The distances are short enough so that new players will not feel overwhelmed, but other players may find their brevity to be trivial.
The couple of hills will introduce players to what is possible on a course without frustrating them whereas more experienced players might want a more dynamic landscape.
The open holes in the beginning will get the new player accustomed to throwing at full power. Meanwhile, players that are more familiar with the sport will likely not notice the distance.
The wooded holes are very forgiving. The new player can easily navigate them while still forcing themselves to learn to throw evasively. The familiar player will appreciate a refresher course of the basics.

In short, people who have been playing with any degree of regularity for more than a couple of months might find themselves underwhelmed at this course while new players will appreciate how approachable it is.

So, if you would like to introduce someone to disc golf, this is the perfect place to go. It's not really meant for high-level play, but not every course should be.

Perfect for Practicing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 11, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Short holes to practice your mid/approach shots. Playable in under an hour with a second person and probably 30 minutes by yourself.

Cons:

It was a little difficult to find. Though the park itself isn't huge, it would've been nice to have a sign on the main road. It can easily get muddy and is somewhat overgrown.

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much and this was spot on. It was perfect to ride my bike to after work (4-5 miles), play 9, and still get home before dark. Great for honing your game with not a lot of monstrous shots needed and/or people around. The baskets are marked with yellow tape that points to the next tee, but there are also now signs throughout as well. Though many of the holes are tight for a practice course, I personally like the challenge. It would've been nice to have some kind of hole info at each tee, but it's not really that kind of course. Wear pants; if you're like me, you'll be spending some time in the brush and thorn bushes aren't very forgiving.

rough around the edges 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 20, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

It is a rustic course that runs through a quite wooded area in a nice park. the tee pads and baskets are in good condition and there are some nice opportunities for tight technical throws.

Cons:

The fairways are very tight and there is thick underbrush throughout. Every time I went to pick up my disc, I could see poison ivy in the rough and creeping onto the fairway. I imagine that there are a lot of ticks in the rough as well.

Also the course is not marked. I was lucky to find a disc golfer leaving and he pointed me to the first tee pad.

Other Thoughts:

I was driving through and I used Udisc to find the course. The directions on Udisc were a little off. You would be better off putting Tamanend Park on your GPS and finding it that way.

A great beginner course, probably frustrating for everyone else 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course was certainly designed with the brand new beginner in mind, fortunately that's precisely what I am. It was my first ever time disc golfing and this course worked wonders for improving my game and throwing in just 9 short holes. I'll certainly be visiting it many times in the immediate future and will certainly hit it up when teaching new friends. The course is a very easy layout with easy to read signs once you spot them and since the underbrush hasn't grown in yet it is great for retrieving wild throws. All the baskets and tee mats are in fine condition.

Cons:

Perhaps its greatest advantage of being a beginner course is also its greatest negative. I can't imagine too many intermediate to dedicated disc golfers giving this field any real attention other than to try it just once. Granted this is only my first course I've played but it just doesn't strike me as very difficult or interesting. I honestly can't think of any other cons. It is apparent that some areas of the course could get muddy after a decent rain but everything was bone dry and perfect for my day of play.

Pros:

Hole 7

Cons:

Muddy
No signs or tee markers make it hard to navigate
Stupidly short
Sticker plants everywhere
Antique tee pads and baskets
Lots of dog poop, bagged and unbagged.
Hole 9 is dangerous, little kids playing behind the basket.

Other Thoughts:

I've played this course several times and every time I'm amazed by how bad it is. I'll forget after 6 or 8 months and stop by again because I find myself in the neighborhood.
If you can find the first hole, it is the only one where you might need a driver. Don't end up in the woods to the right of the teepad, meaning dont griplock a backhand or let your flick go anywhere near the woods or you'll be lucky if you find your disc and you'll certainly pay the price to the sticker bushes.
The path from 1 to 2 goes through a swamp that I've never seen dry out. Walking up 2's fairway can be a little drier but it's often a sloppy mess to get to anyway. Putter or mid with a sticker bush to miss in the middle of the fairway.
3 is where the course designer must have bumped his head and stopped paying attention to what he was doing. The tee pad is in the middle of a field (hard to find) pointing at a park bench with a basket hidden in the brush behind it. All but 2 of the times I have been here, there were people on the bench so I had to skip this hole (would you ask somebodys grandparents to get out of your way so you can throw your putter 140 feet?). And then there's that, why is the hole so short? Thee tee pad is in the middle of the field, why not move it back a little and make this a more legit hole?
4 is a swamp.
5 is even worse than 4.
6 is a ridiculously short throw at 130 feet but it's down a walking path and the stickers are so thick on both sides of the path I think about not throwing it every time I'm there. Not that I'd want more chance to get stabbed, but the hole would at least seem more legit if the tee pad was farther back up the walking path closer to 5's tee.
7 is the only hole on this course I think is worth playing. It's an open, grassy uphill field shot to a basket in tree jail. I don't know what those little trees are but they are super cool.
8 is a tunnel shot out to a basket in an open field, make it through the tunnel or fight with the stickers to get your disc back. Even if you are on the fairway in the tunnel it can get sketchy trying to backswing or follow through.
9 is a blind poke and hope fade with a sandbox that had kids playing in it a couple of the times I was there that is right next to the basket. If you go long up the road and make it through the trees, you better hope there aren't any kids in there.

I wouldn't bring someone new here because of all the sticker bushes. If you go off the fairway it's easy to lose a disc and you're gonna get stuck. Played here in Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, it doesn't seem like the swampy holes ever dry. You're going to need the map to navigate the course successfully, there are way too many paths in the woods and there are no tee markers so it's really hard to find some of them. Even the ones out in the field are hard to find, read how many reviewers said they couldn't find the first tee!
There's a lot of room in this park, so I really don't understand why they would put the course in on the walking paths, lots of dog walkers and kids use that space. Also, in a park this hilly, why are 7 of the holes flat?
Hopefully after writing this review I won't forget how bad this course is and don't ever make the mistake of coming here again.

Good Course to burn an hour 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 29, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good mix of fairway lengths.
Fairways are well maintained.
Nice little park.
Good stable tee pads.
Rounds often take 30-40 mins.

Cons:

Rounds are very short, usually play 2 rounds when I am with friends.
The roughs in the middle of summer can be pretty bad, lots of vines and thorns.
Some areas can be muddy, especially between holes 1 and 2.
Very little signage.
Is very difficult to know exactly where course starts.

Other Thoughts:

The first time I went to Tamanend to play, I actually starting playing on tee 9, throwing towards hole 8. That is how poor the signage is at this course. For those who have not played here, park by the pavilions and the first tee is past the closest pavilion.

Other than the really bad signage, the course is a good mix of long drives, technical mid-range shots, with a very deep tunnel on hole 8. You can very easily play this course with 3 discs, and you will only need a driver for the first two baskets.

Fast and fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 7, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Perhaps the best 9 hole course I've ever played, Tamanend offers a lightning round of laughs and quick thrills. With the exception of hole 1, the rest of this course is under 200'. Each hole is well thought out and offers a challenge in its own little (sometimes very little) way. As other reviewers have mentioned, it's a great place to work on putt and approach. Good use of any and all elevation this park provides, as well as natural and man made obstacles to challenge. I'd be here every lunch break if I worked closer.

Cons:

Signage is the only big issue I can speak to. Upon entering the park, hole 1 isn't indicated so I had to refer to the course notes on this site. There are no tee signs. Otherwise, the layout is pretty intuitive, and next tee is usually marked.
The soil on this course retains water well, so if it has rained or snowed recently, expect a lot of squish underfoot.

Great for polishing your short game 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 4, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great course to polish your approach and putts. The entire course plays to parking your "drive" to give yourself the chance to hole it. There are some holes you can take an ace run at like hole six, but if you miss you'll pay for it.

Cons:

None really. The course is great for beginners to work on the importance of accuracy and strategy instead of just blasting big drives. For the more seasoned players it's a great course to work on your short game. My only complaint is watch out for stickers and thorns. The course could also use some signage to help guild players, but for now, the tape indicators on the baskets will work.

Other Thoughts:

You can play the course in about 30 mins. I squeezed in two rounds in just over an hour and that was with me trying to find a disc in the woods that had rolled into the fairway without me noticing it >.>

Pros:

Located in a nice clean county park. Good Mach 3 baskets with yellow tape along the rim indicating the direction of the next tee. Next tee signs with arrows. Rubber tee mats are better than grass/dirt. Beginner friendly? (short finesse holes). Tyler St Pk, a world-class facility with two courses is nearby.

Cons:

Once you enter the park there is nothing to indicate where the course is located. I had to use my phone to look up the info on where to start.

No tee signs what so ever.

Mostly flat (except #6 which is slightly down hill and only 132' and #7 uphill shot).

#1 tee pad doesn't directly point towards the basket. If not for the group ahead of me, I would not of known where the basket was.

Rough can be very THICK in places with vines, stickers and stinging nettles (in the fairway of 7).

A large sand box with kids playing is too close to basket #9 which can't be seen from the tee. A blind shot that I found to be dangerous. I told the group behind me "don't throw" and to skip the hole.

Only hole #1 is longer than 231'.

Other Thoughts:

I'm not sure this course is beginner friendly without tee signs and the thick rough. I have played 11 'new to me' courses just this year and this comes up short in every category. None of the pro's I listed are directly golf shot related.

Good mix of BH & FH shots with some open and some tighter fairway/approach. Try a putter only round of 9 to work on form

Cons:

Nice For Beginners 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 18, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very beginner friendly 9 hole course located in a nice township park in Southampton. Multiple pavilions and adequate parking available. Good working baskets. Decent sized rubber fly pads at each hole. Navigation easy with small "next tee" signs and/or a visible path leading to the next pad. Good balance of open and more technical holes. Elevation and a small stream incorporated into the layout. Some neat little holes- 7 and 8 in particular stand out. Players of all ability levels can be successful here.

Cons:

Probably won't sustain the interest of the advanced player for very long, as only 1 hole is over 300 feet. No tee signs yet. Areas around several of the baskets are an ice rink in the winter and undoubtedly hold rain during warmer months. Some thick rough in spots.

Other Thoughts:

Tamanend successfully reaches its target audience: the beginning or intermediate player- and is very family friendly. It provides the opportunity for a quick round and a nice warm up before or cool down after playing the supercourse at Tyler State Park 15 minutes away. There is room here for expansion to 18 holes and for inclusion of long tees- both critical elements if one wishes to draw the advanced or pro player here with any frequency. An enjoyable playing experience.

Nice 9-hole disc golf course nestled inside a great community park. Plays as it was designed to with short but sometimes difficult shots. Most holes are birdie-able. Some nicely placed pin locations that will test your short game. Great place to stop for a quick round at lunch time or after work.

Cons:

As with any disc gold course inside a park, there will be times of conflict with non-DG'ers. As long as everyone stays cool, this won't result in anything worse than having to wait a minute or 2 before throwing the next shot. The rough around some baskets is REAL rough. Over time, that won't be an issue.

Other Thoughts:

This course is exactly what Lower Bucks County needed - a place for beginners to learn the game. With a possible expansion to 18 holes, this solid course will only get better. Hats off to Brian and Matt for getting this project done.

Only 9 holes, and most of them are shorter around 160-210 feet but its a great mix of skill shots, cool holes, fun terrain and the 3 of us had a lot better time than what we were expecting. Ended up playing the course 3 times in one day. Would absolutely come back if anything was going on at Tyler and was crowded.

Nice baskets, plenty of trees to keep you honest. Quite a few benches to take a break on. Lots of parking, decent black mat tee pads with each holes number marked on them.

Cons:

No signs, no maps, no yardage, semi-confusing set up, we walked around for a while to figure out where the next hole was.

Other Thoughts:

I hope what Optizimo said is true and they are building another 9 holes.

Had a great day, makes you work on your short game. Happy that another course is added to the area.
