2010 BIG D in the Desert Comp!! DGCR !

I don't know what blm stands for but how hard is it to find a 300 meter long dry lake bed in the desert?

Most of the dry lake beds in the West are under government control and not all allow access or are easily accessible. The size of the area can help generate surface winds and "thermal" conditions. The "small" section of Ivanpah used is only about 2 miles long and 1/4 mile wide and literally out the back door of Whiskey Pete's Hotel and Casino.

While there are many more possible locations, they are not near anything. Primm is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, but at least it has everything needed to support traveling players. Plus, you can stay "on site" and have hotels, shopping, restaurants and entertainment. It is on a major interstate and there is an international airport and major city (Las Vegas) within an hour drive. There are also volunteers to help at the event and put up players. Other lake bed sites that allow access are quite a drive from the next "town" - a place where you may be lucky to find a sub-standard Motel Six and a convenience store, let alone local players to help volunteer.

It is not like throwers gain some magical distance by going to the desert. They train for the special conditions and take advantage of the favorable winds and possible "thermal" conditions. The top throwers are willing to travel across the country and across the globe to compete against other top players plus have the chance to set a recognized World Record. They have used the same equipment for measuring all the top throws at Big D events since 2000. So past and present records can be compared fairly.

Well that is a hell of an answer

Maybe I should have rephrased the question as "Wghy is the BLM so bureaucratic about filming on a dry lake bed?"

ya its pretty cool throwing out there, if there is no wind you can toss a broken in ROC back and forth 500ft, but soon as the wind starts, you gotta know what your doing...me and a few others sure didnt haha

i would say out of 35 throws over the 3 days there practicing, and in the comp, i only got 2 to hook in the wind, and none of those 2 were in the comp, and they were both with a 8-10 mph wind (697' 213m) =(....the more experienced guys could get 3-4 out of each set of 5 throws to hook in the wind.. just a few degrees difference determines a 450' throw and a 800' throw, the idea is to throw across the wind, throwing the disc really high, almost vertical, with the nose down, which is something i only could do with luck, i did not have enough experience to be able to do that..i tried my best though...

i do believe the longest throw recorded over the 3 days with an 8-10 mph wind was 204m though...so im happy with my 213 =-p...sux mine was practicing.

That is still pretty darn good for just getting started out. I am sure you learned a ton to take back home with you and try out.

Big D

Katchtz,

It was great to meet you and see some new power out in the desert. I had the same trouble as you, my practice results were way better than my tourney. I hit 238 and 221 Friday. Oh well I'm already thinking of next time. You got me thinking about remax golf drives and I googled Happy Gilmore swing and found this video, check it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wguFY0DDoAU&feature=player_embedded

yo erin, i hope i will be able to come out again next year, i was watching you and the jarvis bros trying to get the form down....

ya the 238m you threw the first day, when the wind started going good was nice to watch, i was at the other end to the left of your girlfriend watching it ride.. you had the right idea of throwing that high nose down shot..i suck at throwing with the wind! for now haha...i need to practice that.

that golf vid is cool...but the guy they were testing can only swing 107 mph...to be compeditive in remax, swing speeds will need to be around 140-148....and at that speed, you will actually swing in the low 130s if you run up and swing.

i tried over and over again on my swing meter to hit 150 when i was swinging around 146mph max....running up, and swinging my guts out i could not even get 135, without a ball sitting there.

Hey Discette (or anyone else)
What happened to David Wiggins Jr.?

I was sure he was gonna crush the record

He played the USDGC the week before and was not able to take more time off of high school.

Couple of questions, to anyone who was there:

1) Is the throwing line kept perpendicular to the wind (do they move it if the wind shifts during the day)?

2) What's the throwing surface -- hard sand?

3) The way the rules are written, if a Masters division entrant (accidentally?) sets the world distance record, he gets no bonus. He'd have to enter in Open to get the signature disc, $10,000, etc. True?

4) Why so few entrants? You'd think a lot of people would want to roll the dice (near Las Vegas!) for a shot at a five-figure paycheck.

ya you throw which ever way you think is the best....it feels mostly like concrete ground with a layer of dirt on top of it
