With doubles, the only thing I've really seen work over the long term is random draw. Trying to do pools (for reasons of fairness) actually creates more unfairness reaction in players, so it is completely defeating its purpose. Plus, way easier to admin a random draw. Yea, you will get some A-A partners and some C-C partners, but overall people seem to like it way more. That is the dominant format in SE Michigan at least.
