Disc Golf in the News

Some disc golf baskets on Diamond X course removed by City officials in Billings, MT.

In my opinion: Story highlights complex custodianship of disc golf courses built on City property with Club $ (+ usually maintained by some combo. of City labor & Club labor). Doubt there's many other recreational activities/ facilities with this model.

Wow, the headline was NOT a pun.

bummer. diamond x will still be a good course, but it won't be as epic as it was when it was 18+ i'm glad i got to play it this past summer. the two shots that will hopefully continue to make it great are the pin attached to the cliff for #9 & the top of the world shot from the top of the rim (#18). if they lose those, the course will be castrated.

Here's one of the first instances of disc golf in the Indianapolis news. An early piece by Indiana sports-writing great Terry Hutchens, the article covers the first PDGA event in Indianapolis, a tournament at George Washington Park (then a nine-holer) in June 1988. The tournament was organized and promoted by Indianapolis disc golf greats Jerry Suiter, Al "Speedy" Guerrero, Henry Aldridge, John Wyse and others. The title is masterful journalism: "Disc golf popular except here."

Here's the PDGA event page: https://www.pdga.com/tour/event/18408#MPO

Notable finishes include: #1 Steve Wisecup (1989 World Champ), #2 Dave McCormack (Gateway/ course design), #3 Ken Gill (aka The PDGA Logo). HB Clark took #15; Rick Rothstein finished #2 in Masters. And I'm sure a missed a bunch of other notable players.

The tournament was the first Checkered Flag Open (CFO), which just celebrated it's 32nd iteration this Fall (the CFO took a year off in 1992 when Indianapolis hosted the PDGA Amateur World Championships).

Disc golf at Washington park started in '87 with the relocation of the baskets from Eagle's Crest, Indianapolis's first disc golf course. The course at Eagle Creek Park was disbanded to make room for the 1987 Pan Am Games, which was awarded to Indianapolis after Chile withdrew due to political instability. Riding the wave of economic enthusiasm for amateur sports in Indianapolis during this period, the IDGC successfully petitioned Indy Parks to expand the course at Washington & to install a new course at Brookside Park in order to host the 1992 PDGA Amateur World Championships, the largest disc golf tournament ever held (by player count) at the time.

Did you have to use Mr. Peabody's wayback machine to find that article?

For a recent article about a new course coming in our town, the newspaper pulled a photo from a Birdie Bash I ran in 2016 as an example of "this is what disc golf looks like." That's not as Wayback Machine" as the 1990s, but it still amused me.

Some people count sheep to go to sleep. Not John, he marks trees to be cut down/obliterated in his sleep. And right before he marks the last one, he wakes up and realizes it was just a dream. It makes him think back when he was a kid and his dad had just bought him his first toy chainsaw. Those were the days.

That's actually close to true, Trey. I do go through old courses in my head to fall alseep, but counting the number of beautiful trees we SAVED to make those fairways. And sometimes the trees we planted.

And when I was a kid, my dad gave me a golf club, not a chainsaw. And a baseball. Couldn't hit the baseball very far...

Don't feel bad, I don't think anyone could hit a baseball very far with a golf club.

I always joke with John about his relationship with trees as far as a course designer goes. I know that it actually hurts to cut down a tree for any reason. I mean what kind of person actually enjoys cutting down trees for no reason? I am sure there are people that dislike them. I remember Redneckmachismo always complaining in his reviews about there being "too many trees" but we actually need them in order to exist. So john, thanks for planting trees as a part of your regimen. To be fair, I actually don't remember ever seeing a toy chainsaw.:\

scroll down to the bolded "we were forced" section. I guess we're kind of a big deal, just like roller skates. :/

This post made me curious about long term trends. Hopefully this link works and shows you the Google Trends for "disc golf" searches since 2004.

There was a very consistent cycle of searches with peaks in the summer and troughs in the winter for the first 16 years. In Spring 2020 it reached a new high right after COVID-19. The past two summers had very elevated searches.

This winter, the trough is still higher than 2019 and before, but a bit below 2020/2021's Dec/Jan trends.

Other cool analytic tools are available in the dashboard.

Will be interesting to see what happens this summer!

There's a Cale Leiviska designed "championship" course coming to my backyard!!

"I am also a professional disc golfer, currently ranked #15 in the world. I only say this to show that I recognize a property fit for disc golf when I see one. The first time I walked the grounds of Casper Park, I knew immediately that it had the potential to be transformed into a world class, destination course."

implying you need to be a pro dger to walk into some woods and say "yah this will do"

I got a kick outta that too lol.

I don't recall much of the park, I've played baseball on the fields once 13 years ago, that's all. But looking at the pictures, it does look like a very nice property. I'm also glad they hired a real designer as opposed to the city just winging a course.

Nice to see SI with a couple of disc golf related articles.
