Discmania splits with Innova

PRESS RELEASE: DISCMANIA ESTABLISHES A STATE-OF-THE-ART GOLF DISC FACTORY, GROWS RAPIDLY
21 JUN, 2021

Press Release, June 21st

A Finnish company specializing in disc golf products is setting up its own factory, aiming for strong international growth. Discmania, the market leader in Europe, is setting up a 22,000 sq/ft state-of-the-art factory in Skellefteå, Sweden and will employ between 20-25 people.

Discmania, founded in 2006, has emerged over the past few years as one of the most coveted disc golf brands in the world. Some of the world's top professional disc golfers use Discmania's products. Previously, Discmania's products have been produced by other disc manufacturers. Now, the new factory allows more production capacity as well as better control of the brand's products.

"Our own factory with full control of our products has long been our goal. Our new highly automated factory, together with our strong marketing expertise, gives us an excellent opportunity to grow into the world's leading disc golf brand," says the company's founder and Head of Growth Jussi Meresmaa.

The annual revenue of Spin18 Oy, the company behind the brand, has grown rapidly. The company has its head office in Tampere, Finland, a sales office in Stockholm, Sweden, and a subsidiary in Colorado, USA. The group's annual revenue last year was 14 million euros, and the current target for 2021 is 22 million. With the new factory, we predict that the revenue will rise to more than 30 million by 2022. The company expects the greatest growth in the US market, where Discmania still has the position of a challenger.

"Although Finland is a model country for disc golf, and our home market, we are strongly focused on exports. At the moment, about 70% of our annual revenue comes from outside Finland," Meresmaa adds.

Discmania's product range currently includes three different disc lines (Active, Evolution, and Originals), of which the production of the popular Originals collection will start in Sweden this summer. Next, the company will also bring the production of the Evolution collection to its own factory. In addition to the popular disc lines, Discmania has an industry-leading disc golf course concept: DiscGolfPark. Sales of disc golf courses have also grown swiftly, and the company expects to supply more than 300 disc golf courses this year around the world.

Just found a little more regarding c-line on the website:
Our new C-Line plastic has also been reinvented. This isn't the C-Line of the past, it isn't our Neo blend from the Evolution line, or whatever other premium plastic there is. This is ours and there is nothing else like it.

We enlisted the help of top international chemists to start the process at the molecular level. The custom formula went to multiple candidates to create a plastic blend we can stand behind in any circumstance. You wanted the best, this is the best.

The result is a stunning, Italian made blend that produces unmatched grip, flight performance, and durability. We can't wait for you to get your hands on it.

Discmania officially manufacturing Originals line themselves

While this was the obvious best choice for the long haul, there's no guarantee their new molds are going to fly like the true Originals molds.

p2 has been redone and approved by Simon!

It's literally his job to approve and to hype the new molds and plastics. He can just wipe the stamp of his real originals and viewers wouldn't really know the difference.

I have to wonder if he'll be throwing these new putters in the World Championships this week. On one hand it would give the best exposure possible, so maybe Jussi will pull for it (or even give bonus for it). His putting has been solid as of late though, so prob not a good idea to rock the boat for the World Championship.

Why make them is Sweden? is this factory a part of Lat64 factory in Sweden?

So is this NEW molds or the "old" Innova molds? Eagle says "is molded very close to the original" so i guess DIscmania just made a new mold as close to the Innova parts as the could.

I'm confused as heck here.

Trash Panda has had multiple injection molds made, I think 4 total before he worked out all of his design spec mistakes, for his DIY disc making project. They were in the range of hundreds of dollars to make. I realize there is always a difference between a truly industrial quality build and DIY build, but 20 to 40 times the price? What exactly is making a single mold so expensive?

Trash Panda may be getting his molds made from less expensive materials while he figures the process out. Once he gets the process fine-tuned to where he can consistently make discs and actually sell them, then he would get more expensive, durable molds. But when you are making discs by hand and only turning out a couple at a time, you don't need high quality molds.

I'd guess they cut new molds and tired to get as close to the Innova geometry as possible. They might have the specs for the anhyzer top.

Get ready for the P2v2, PDv2, etc.

I doubt they got the Innova molds, but I don't think anything would stop them from reverse engineering their own discs. Take a P2 (for example), scan it or whatever....and make a computer drawing of the disc that could be used to create a mold.

I'm glad to hear they are creating their own manufacturing plant/process and will be able to bring back the Originals. I'm not a Discmania thrower, but the disc golf world needs the competition....it would be bad if Innova and Discraft were the only choices.

Not only that, but the new factory is in Skelleftea, same city as Lat64's. You get the impression from the video and press release that this is a new and independent Discmania-owned factory, but I do wonder if there's still some kind of connection with L64.
