Higher Ratings in PDGA Sanctioned Leagues

Nah, SSA is the Scratch Scoring Average - ie what a 1000 rated player should be shooting.

It's not completely relative to the ratings of the players that are on the course that day, though that does weigh in the calculation.

It is completely relative to the ratings of the players that are on the course that day. The SSA is entirely calculated from the way players with established ratings shoot that day, it doesn't take the course or other events into account at all.

Like I said, who's to say the numbers from league aren't closer to the true course rating? There's no independent way to confirm it either way. For all we know, some course SSAs are inflated due to tournament stats only. I think we'll be reconsidering course ratings all over the country based on league play.

are you suggesting that an established professional cannot accurately gauge scratch to within +/-5 strokes on his home course?

I bet that the main variation in SSAs is caused by league play being populated by a much higher proportion of newer players than is typical at tournaments. If they have few rated rounds and are quickly improving, "ratings lag" could be contributing a lot to lower SSAs....and lower round ratings for established players.

Can anyone participating in leagues comment on this?

I'd say experienced pros can determine SSA within +/-5 most of the time usually over versus underestimating. Even I can't do it closer than around +/- 3 most of the time unless I poke the numbers into our Hole Forecaster which gets within +/- 1.5.

Is it likely that all those new players would be propagators though?

Yup.....and when only 4 or so are used the results come out pretty crazy.

SSE on here is 51.2......which just furthers my problems trying to understand what SSE is.

47 has been the benchmark 1000 rated round and all of a sudden it becomes a 960 due to all the props...either having lag or just being better than their rating on this particular course.

An explanation that might make you happy is that all TX players rated over 1000 are way overrated. :D

What course and what configuration? Can you provide links to league results and tournament results using the same layout?

SSE is explained here

Yea like Brad Williams....Who beat Feldberg to win An a-tier this year and has made nearly $8,000 without leaving the state.

He also got 2nd at the Player's cup, won an A-tier on Climo's course, Tied Climo for 1st at the Master's Cup.....and beat him while competing in his first worlds

are they playing that league from a different park or different tees from week to week? One of those dudes got a 54, which was only rated 834 and the week before it was 894....strange

bradley's a really fine disc golfer who isnt afraid to show the world how big a dbag he can be....

No. But in spot checking over the years, the relative percentages remain similar. I think PDGA average rating is 907 last I looked.

Yup, they are def lower rated, im not a big fan of it because you have to put in ur pdga number to play, I wish it was an option to be rated or to not be rated

The ratings calculations are based on random collections of players. If players can choose, only those who think they can get good ratings in leagues would play which would depress the SSA even more.

ratings are screwed in general. Good things ratings don't win tournaments. It is probably the #1 worst thing implemented by the PDGA in 20+ years. Was much better when you played in the division that you thought you should be in, not what a rating suggests. I wish they were never created.

And I wish Chuck for once in his life would admit that he/they are wrong. Any given rating during any round can and does vary by around 25 +/- depending on who is playing or how they play that day.
