Also you don't have to have an all or nothing, ace run or layup mentality. Good course management involves assessing each hole and each shot for risk versus reward.
 
I would much rather to get a birdie than a par, but I dunno if this is good or not, but just what I do is unless I know I can make the birdie, I'll just park it right at the bottom of the pin, and walk away with a par.
 
learn to push putt. Falling putts don't blow by. If you doubt your ability at said distance, throwing a push or falling putt gives you a chance at the duece without a chance of creating a longer second putt. I've only been playing (daily) about as long as the OP, but it works for me. fwiw.
