I usually look for a long stick I can poke at it with if it's low enough, or a nice hefty but short stick to throw if it's higher. I've also climbed a few trees to get at some discs.

A friend of mine had the bright idea to throw his bag at a disc in a tree. It didn't work out too well for him.

I carry a tennis ball in bag and a sling shot in car. Sling shot works really well when the discs are high up in branches - I usually lend it to some poor soul who spent the last ten minutes throwing rocks at his disc and he'll get it down within a minute.

The rope through the baseball is for the pass through. Once the rope is over the limb I just pull the rope and the disc falls. I have not ever gotten the rope stuck or the ball stuck in the tree.
