The plans are set for Thanksgiving week and a tentative itinerary is in place. I keep telling myself this trip is about visiting family and friends and not about playing disc golf….but I know this is just a rationalization.

So the idea is to play at least one course a day with the chosen course being of high quality and challenge. I have every belief that unforeseen circumstances will alter these plans…

Day 1 – The drive from PA to OH - The Black Course - http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=3640

Day 2 - The drive to W. KY - Lincoln Ridge - http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=730

Day 3-4 – Staying in W. KY - Yellow Creek Park - http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=893

Day 5 - Drive to Dayton area - Idlewild - http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=507

Day 6 - Thanksgiving – probably Sycamore Trails as it is close to where we are staying. - http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1891

Day 7 – Black Friday – New Creations (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=4851) & Handyman Ace Hardware (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=4222)

Day 8 – Drive Home to PA – Flat Rocks (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=60&mode=ci)

There are a couple of days where I think we might be able to play multiple courses. Specifically the Day 2 drive (maybe Charlie Vettiner Park or Seviren Lang DGC), the day 3-4 stay in W. KY (Holler in the Hills?), the Day 5 drive to Dayton (Mt. Airy Forest or one of the Louisville courses) & then the actual stay in Dayton (lots of courses to choose from).

Please share your thoughts, suggestions, arguments for/against a particular course, etc…..they are all welcome and appreciated.

I've played a portion of those courses you've listed. Not sure of you're route though, if you're going through southern Indiana to get towards W KY, I'd recommend swapping Yellow Creek in Owensboro for Mesker Park in Evansville. Yellow's a little pitch-and-putt that you can fly thru pretty easily whereas Mesker has a much larger fun factor/challenge to it and its on much better land (rolling hills).
Vettiner and Lang are both great choices, I'd recommend either of them. I'd also recommend Holler In The Hills if you haven't been there before, just remember to contact the owner before you show up. Also, let me know when you're going to be there and I'll try to meet up with you for a round. Happy travels.

My girlfriend is from Owensboro and that's where we will be staying in KY. She plays DG too and wants to playYellow Creek since it's a park from her childhood, etc. So a sentimental choice for her.

Yeah, I'm not sure what our exact route is (guessing Rt 64 out of Louisville) but Mesker was in my sights also. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out as these are difficult - but wonderful - decisions to make.

Thanks for your input Weeman.

I've driven from Philly to Cincy 3 times in the last 18 months. The Black Course is truly a challenge and difficult, be preapred for a hike in the hills and print a map ahead of time! Flat Rocks is decent but noting compared to the "big 3" in the Cincy area (Idlewild, Lincoln and Mt Airy). Next year I'm not stopping along the way and will get to Cincy ASAP. Also, play Holler since it's so unique.

Looks like you've got some nice courses selected. It's worth trying to hit up Madisonville City Park which is very highly rated and not too terribly far away, although it's probably faster to get to Mesker in Evansville. I remember Vastwood Park just east of Owensboro being a fun course if you have time.

Please let us know what you think of New Creations. I'm dying to get up there and see if it's really that good or if it's being over hyped.

Holler is totally worth the drive. If you can get away long enough to get down there you won't regret it.

@Adam H:
Not sure how I missed Madisonville in my search but thanks for the head's up AdamH. I was also checking out Vastwood as well since it's so close. Not sure what we'll decide but if I could only get one course in while staying in Owensboro it would be Holler for sure.

I'm playing New Creations for the sole purpose of seeing if it's really that good or hyped. I really want it to be that good and will review it regardless.

@discNDav:

So if Flat Rocks is just 'ok' and you've made that trip multiple times, what other course(s) in Columbus would you recommend? This would basically be an 'on the way home' course play.

Wow, those woods seem....Pennsylvania-esque and look like loads of fun in a scary/dangerous/thrilling kind of way. It may be a little off the beaten path for this trip & I can only imagine what kind of physical condition we'll be in after playing all these other courses, visiting with family, driving all those hours, etc. But at this point we're not ruling anything out just yet so thanks for the input. I completely overlooked this hidden little gem.

Flat Rocks is much better than "OK", my review is the most recent one, I gave it 3.5 stars. Also, I didn't mind the 14 miles south it was from the interstate, the drive was more scenic than I-70!

it simply won't match the quality of the big 3 in the Cincy area. The other Columbus area courses I played back in the early 90's so I'll let others chime in.

I agree with discNDav you need to play all three of the "big 3" in the Cincy area (Idlewild, Lincoln and Mt Airy). PM me and I will meet you at Mt Airy. Do not miss stopping at The Nati Disc Golf pro shop when at Mt Airy.
I hope you enjoy playing at our courses....Have a safe trip.

Yes the 'Big 3' are a top priority and I will make sure not to miss out playing them. Thanks for the head's up on The Nati - it's right there by the course! Mt. Airy's target day is the Wed. before Thanksgiving while driving from KY to Dayton. If not then I will drive down from Dayton to play there. I'll PM you when I know more so hopefully we can meet up and play a round there.

When are you in O'boro area? Vastwood is my course (20mins East of Yellow Creek) and I'd be happy to be a "guide."

I'll also be in NKY from Thurs thru Sat(maybe Sun) and will no doubt be found at Idlewild (maybe Lincoln Ridge sat.) Fri and Sat.

O'boro from late Sun-early Wed. With rain in the forecast (my least fav. playing condition), we're going to wait and see where/when to play in the area. If we decide to hit Vastwood I'll PM you to see if you're available for a round.
