SIDE GAMES

The hole at Trophy Lakes with the basket in the ground (#13) has a double mando which are 2 tall Pine Trees about 10-15 feet in front of the teepad which many players do not always get past. I have always wanted to have a prize for the furthest from the basket on that hole because sometimes the player's disc ends up behind the teepad.

That would be a great consolation prize. No one would ever TRY to get that prize, but it would be nice to end up with a prize for being terrible.

At a course I once played at, the TD set this up. It's just a CTP, but it was fancy.

In between holes 13 and 14, just before the box for 14.. was a cardboard box full of brand new putters and a marker. Each person on each group, as they went past, picked out a putter and wrote their name on it. From that spot, you could see a traveler basket across a small gorge 175' away. The closest remaining putter at the end of the day won something. Afterwords, everyone got to keep their new putter.

The neat part about it was being able to take a break from the concentration of being in tournament mode and getting to toss a fun shot with no fear.

Another (hidden) side game at that tournament was "worst hole". The person who took the highest number on any hole won something. The catch is you can't let anyone know about this beforehand.

A popular game he have been doing at tournaments is straightest drive. On an open hole, we put a rope straight from the basket to the tee pad, starting 175' from the tee. Whoever lands closest to the rope during the tournament wins.

Birdie Busters: randomly select four holes and if a player birdies all of those, but they win a prize.
Longest Putt: designate a hole where the longest hole out wins a prize. Generally this would be a hole that is not suited for CTP.

At an end-of-the-season skills competition, we've done a few interesting side games:

(1) Speed Golf: Doesn't matter how many strokes it takes you to put the disc in the basket, but the winner is whoever completes the hole(s) in the shortest amount of time possible. Hilarious watching people sprint after their disc while it's still in the air.

(2) Knockout: Variation of the basketball shoot-around game. Players line up at about 30-40 feet from the basket with their putter. Player 1 will shoot and Player 2 shoots just afterwards. Player 2 is trying to sink his putt before Player 1. If he does so, Player 1 is "knocked out" from further competition, single elimination style. The next player in line may not throw his putt until a successful putt is retrieved from the basket.

(3) Opposite-Hand Long Drive: No rollers or thumbers. Spot the disc from where it lands. Define a fairway with rope and watch everybody try to rip their disc with their non-dominant hand.

We've also done rotational putting stations where you putt 5 times from each station. 2 points for a make, 1 point for chain-out, and bonus points if you make all 5. We had one station that was a longer putt from a raised pad worth double points (4 points for a make, 2 points for chain-out).

You would think this is the case, but the last time our club had a "farthest from the basket" prize, the "winner" made a terrible shot on purpose to take the consolation prize after having decided that they were going to finish out of the cash anyway.

In these parts, we call the Game described in "B" as Bump because you can bump the other player's ball.

In the last round someone with nothing to lose will try. You could throw a drive 300' opposite direction. Mark it for Furthest from Pin, then call unplayable lie and throw 3 from the teepad. Who cares, you weren't getting paid out anyways, at least you get a CTP- FTP... If this is a trophy only event half the field might attept this. Probably not a good idea.

On the card we play:
Dots- closest to the pin and must make the putt
Poker- you get a card if you win or tie the hole. There is a seven card max, you can draw more than seven cards but, you have to discard after seven. Best five card hand wins.
