sleeve covers that mowers can see

What are people using to cover pin positions that are mower visible? Lake Sonoma is getting some new pin positions, so we want to see what the best practices are. Links, examples welcome!

I've seen some courses put capped pvc pipe in the sleeves rather than cover them, it sticks up 3' or so and makes it really obvious where they are.

exactly. But are these something you can simply buy or do they need custom fabrication?

All you need is a length of PVC pipe where the outer diameter is the same as the inside diameter of the sleeve.

Nice to put a cap on them in winter climates to protect the sleeves from damage in freeze/thaw cycles. Keeps bees and wasps out of them as well.

Install the sleeves with sprinkler covers. This allows you to put the lock and sleeve slightly below grade and with the cover it's flush to the ground. Best for mowers cause they don't have to worry about avoiding them. They can mow right over the top.
There's a diagram on innova web site.

Don't use PVC inside the pipe, pvc weathers poorly, if the mower hits it they tend to break off inside the sleeve and become a problem. Bicycle flags are great though, bright orange, cheap and bend when bumped. Can also use them as pole holes for practicing.

use the grey underground stuff and it will be fine, bicycle flags are much more expensive and snap way too easily. plus fiberglass splinters suck!

Keep em low & nobody has to worry about avoiding anything!

You should consider a new PVC source. Swimming pool plumbing is PVC that is exposed to the elements out of the ground for years and years with no issues. Schedule 40 PVC will hold up fine.

Even if you put them low enough to mow over, I would still get some pvc to mark them. We have problems finding alternate positions without a marker.

I'm kind of an advocate of having poles sticking out of the ground not just to show the mowers where they are, but to help show players where basket is in, by showing them where it isn't. If you see a PVC pipe sticking out of the short position, you know that the basket is in the long one that might not be visible from the tee.

Wildcat bluff in Urbana, IA uses red metal poles inside the sleeves. This works great, they are highly visible to the mowers and players alike.
