Whats par for you?

I know a lot of people play everything as a par 3 as it gives them an idea how hard a course is, or its the pro rules, but I only play casual games with usually a wide variety of skill levels and I find that a bit overwhelming and deflating, even for me; nevermind my fiance or kids. Then with alternate tees, and when you pick your shots based on what looks like a more fun way to play; I was always taught a system similar to ball golf

< 300 = par 3
< 400 = par 4
> 400 = par 5

I know, I am not as awesome as those who play all par 3s but it makes sense to me and everyone has a chance to have fun.

The par doesn't matter to me, having a lower score then my husband does:) We keep track of the lowest scores for pin placements (short, medium & long), then spend the season trying to break them. This year hubby has the lowest score on all of them:(, but I have one more ace then he does:)

Par means nothing to me. Stroke total is all I care about. I use "par 3's" only to keep easier track of my score in my head.

All 3's for me, even if I am playing Renny Gold. Just easier to keep track.

3....only exception is if im playing gateway-east in fort worth...700' double mando par 5 and a 601' all through the woods....a 3 aint happenin....then i just remember my total strokes...par is 62

Depends on the course. We play by the signs on my home course BRP, it is a tough course, lots of trees. 27 holes par 86. Only 5 par 4's out of 27. I don't play much on the short easy courses any more, just not much fun.

par 3's.... every hole... even monster hole

generally shoot -2 or even, on 24 holes at hudson mills.

I'm moving to a town that has par 4's and 5's. They're all between 300-420 feet. I will not be playing the posted par. I take that back, I will say I had a double eagle when appropriate just because how often do you get to say double eagle?

Do the majority of you guys follow the normal par for the course, that is marked on the basket or on the tee, or do you prefer just going with all par 3's regardless of the hole?
Neither, because neither are accurate or consistent. I use Close Range par, for the appropriate course level, because a consistent, universal standard for par is necessary.

my 2 local courses don't even have listed par's so we have always played all 3's. Now whereever we go we just keep with the all 3's so we can compare course difficulties better. For example, 1 local course is expected to be in the 3-8 shots below par, while the other course if you score under par it's a real acheivment, even for those who play the course often. Then we all went and played a new course that was very challenging, and the best score of the day was a +13. It makes it easier to see where you stack up against a course.

I really don't understand they're all par 3 menatality. I played ball golf for years and still do ocassionally. Some course are all par 3s and that's what they are referred to as. But most courses are not. I've played some courses where making par was very difficult and others where it was not. Lenght was not the only factor.

We write our score everytime and we play each hole as the course lists it. I look at some baskets and say, wow that was an easy par 4. And then I look at others and say how in the hell am I ever supposed to get there in 3.

Par IS what the course designer says it is and for me that is the end of the discussion.

Only for you, however.

Every other week this pops up on a new discussion thread, and it all repeats.

What is needed is a page that explains it all---

Definition of par
CR Par
"Par 3" scorekeeping
Why the posted pars on courses vary so.
Why it all matters.
Why it doesn't matter.
Etc.

Then each time some starts this again, we can just copy & paste all of that into the discussion and save 100,000 keystrokes.

Very briefly---

It's a scorekeeping shorthand. You don't have to remember what par was on each hole, just how much your score varies from "3", which for many people on most courses is the most common score.

Actual score is the total throws, not relation to "par". "All-par-3" makes the math easier. Especially if you're not keeping a scorecard.

It's also a blatant misuse of the word "par".

And very common, especially among tournament players.

if the course is marked then i play whatever the signs say, if not then i just play all par 3's

Maybe with another 0.3 years of experience under your belt you will find that neither of your approaches (or a combination) works consistently. :)

Someone here quoted Willie Nelson on the subject of par.

"Par is whatever I say it is. I've got one hole that's a par 23 and yesterday I damn near birdied the sucker."
