Pros:
- good quality Dynamic Discs Veteran baskets (what else!?)
- practice basket (near pavilion, basket by parking lot is 18)
- well mown and maintained
- some good elevation change starting with hole 5
- while a multiuse park, safety hazards are minimal
- great variety of nature and terrain showcasing northern Texas ecology
- some helpful next tee signs
- some steep sections of terrain add interest
- good size concrete tees
- good natural obstacles force a variety of shots
- while some blind shots, losing discs isn't a major problem here due to limited undergrowth
Cons:
- a little limited on amenities - minimal benches and garbage cans
- multiuse park shares space with playground, pavilion, etc.
- navigation is a bit confusing; consulting Google map is necessary, and more next tee signs would really help
- some graffiti on tee signs
- traversing course could be a bit challenging if you aren't pretty able-bodied
- walk from 1 to 2 is excessively long
- no hole numbers on baskets doesn't help navigation
- only notable safety hazard was throwing near walking path on hole 8
Other Thoughts:
Veteran's Park was my first exposure to Texas disc golf, and it did not disappoint. While I would have liked to see the rocks and rattlesnakes of west Texas, this course was a cool mix of the grass and forests with rockiness and scrub brush that northern Texas has to offer.
This course is fairly challenging and will test your technical game in places. I particularly enjoyed hole 5 which is a cool downhill shot through brush obstacles. There is some risk on the course of losing discs although I found this generally minimal. While navigation could definitely be improved, I managed alright on my own with the Google map. There are some next tee signs but more are really needed, and numbers on the baskets would also help.
The course starts out more technical and opens up a bit near the end. Holes 12-14 didn't seem to add much, being out in an open field for the most part. Otherwise, most of the holes had unique characteristics I really enjoyed.
The tee pads and baskets are in great shape and the course is generally well maintained, although some of the tee signs are showing their wear and/or some graffiti, sadly. While it is a multi-use park, the disc golf area is fairly isolated from other activities. If you're in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, I think this course is worth a stop. It might not be a true destination but it's a fun and challenging round and beats many of the area courses in terms of interesting use of the terrain.
While there are 3 tees here, only the main concrete tees are really clear. The others have no separate tee signs and while the blue log markers are fairly easy to find on most holes, the 3rd tees are not and it could get confusing playing something other than the concrete tees. This, to me, makes the addition of other tees far less valuable.
All in all, this is a really fun course I encourage anyone to check out. It makes really good use of the area's limited elevation change, and will punish you if you don't choose your shot wisely in the same way it will reward solid, consistent play. There are a number of disc golf shops nearby as well.
