All the Recent Upgrades Really Polish This Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 4, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The Codorus State Park courses were always fun to play, but historically signage and tee pads were always lacking here. They've been going through some significant upgrades since 2019 (not just in course layout, but features as well), and I'm happy to say that the results are very nice.

- Professional, informative tee signs have been installed at every tee. To me, good signage is one of those things that separates a lot of decent courses from really good ones. There are no "Next Tee" signs/arrows, but the paths are are pretty clear and well-worn. The only holes I had trouble navigating between were 9 and 10, and I figured it out pretty quickly.

- Most holes have short tees for newer players and long tees for those who like a challenge, so everyone can play this course and have fun.

- Tee pads were mostly nice grippy concrete, with an occasional asphalt tee pad sprinkled in the mix (hole #3 long tee for example). The pads were the standard size and provided ample working room for your drive. Most of them were surrounded by level ground, so if you needed a longer run-up, or wanted to drive at a slightly skewed angle, the ground would accommodate it.

- The holes are well-designed and make you think about disc choice, release angle, and shot placement. There's a decent amount of elevation that comes into play, so even though you are consistently driving down wooded fairways you won't feel like you're playing the same hole over and over. The fairways are pretty generous on most holes, so a slightly errant throw will not normally put you into the rough. Hole 5, and the drives on 8, 10, and 12 are a little tight, but in a fun, challenging sort of way.

- Benches are common at the tee pads.

- There's a practice basket with lots of space near the parking lot.

- The setting is really peaceful and beautiful. A great place for a hike even if you're not throwing discs (but why wouldn't you throw discs if you could?).

Cons:

- The rough on these holes can be very rough in the summertime. November-April it's not bad, but once everything grows in, lost discs are a real possibility if you shank one off the fairway. Fortunately these courses are played frequently, so there are lots of searching paths cutting through the rough sections.

- No trash cans anywhere on the course. This is normal for the PA State courses, but unfortunately some players don't follow the carry-in, carry-out guidelines so you will find the occasional bottle or trash along the course. Please pick up after yourself and/or others.

- The Blue Course is quite distant from the nearest bathrooms. There are plenty of wooded spots for the guys, but the gals might find the lack of accommodations displeasing.

- Your distance drivers won't get much, if any use on the Blue course. If you're the type that likes to air-out long drives on open holes, look to the Red or Purple courses at Codorus.

- This course really pushes the RHBH style of play. I'm primarily a RHFH driver (I'm working on my backhand, but just can't get the same power), and I was amazed how often I was pulling out my under-stable discs for backhand drives. Most courses I can find ways to drive forehand, even on holes designed for backhand players, but to get the right placement on many of these holes I just found forehand to be cumbersome.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I really enjoy this course. I'm glad they split up the two 27-hole courses here into three 18's. Each course now has it's own flavor to it, and you don't feel pressured to play those extra nine holes every time you come. The tee-pad and signage upgrades also make these courses feel really polished. Codorus State Park is almost like a disc-golf Mecca. Well worth the trip if you don't live close, and for those of us who do, and absolute local gem!

18-Hole layout: Fewer but Longer Holes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Codorus has been around since 1995, but the course was extensively redesigned and renovated for 2019 Am Worlds. The previous 27-hole layout (18 regular plus 9 "X-holes") has been combined into a single 18-hole, par-63 course. I played from the new concrete tees.

Overall the redesign gives the course a more modern feel. Several shorter, technical holes have been combined to make longer (but still technical), two-shot holes, while many of the fun, old-school par-3 holes have been retained. This gives the course a nice variety of challenges and distances.

The Blue course is the more wooded and technical of the courses at Codorus (the red course is much more open). I greatly prefer playing the Blue course. Most of the holes require precision: shaping lines through the trees or hitting a gap. None of the holes are completely open (which is a pro to me but opinions vary).

Rolling hills and elevation are used well throughout. Nice variety of throws required: right- and left-turning shots, uphill and downhill, high and low ceilings, and a variety of fairway widths.

New Prodigy baskets with bright blue bands are easy to spot in the woods. New, grippy concrete pads on all 18 holes (but see cons).

A white spoke on each basket directs you to the next tee. Tees are marked with a post that lists the hole number and distance (but see cons).

Pretty views of the lake early in the round.

Cons:

New concrete pads are a bit narrow. On some of the tighter holes this hindered my run-up.

Work has been done to clear underbrush but disc-eating rough remains on several holes. Chance of disc loss is moderately high during the growing season but becomes less of a problem after leaves drop in the fall.

The map posted on DGCR does not reflect the 18-hole layout and there is no hole map on the tee posts. This is not a problem on the shorter holes, but maps would be beneficial for several of the longer holes. I assume that an updated map will be posted eventually.

Generally finding the next tee was easy, but in a few cases where paths cross additional directional signs would be helpful. I was able to navigate the few tricky spots using the course map on UDisc.

Other Thoughts:

Having played the 27-hole layout many times, I do miss a few of the older holes (it took me a while to figure out how to deuce some of them, dagnabbit). Reportedly the club will restore the 27-hole layout when they have raised sufficient funds. If/when that happens, I may revisit my review.

I played the 18-hole Blue layout on a calm day, but wind off the lake can be a significant factor at Codorus. Wind is less of an issue at the sheltered Blue course (vs. the open Red course), but reading wind down the fairway that you might not feel on the tee can add challenge to playing here.

I love to play here only if I have a full day 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good Variety of shots required to put up a good score, Holes that force you to use both FH and BH shots. I like the back to back ace runs on 12 and 13. challenging uphill shots and narrow throwing lanes make you enjoy the short gimme birdie holes when they come. Nice lake views, I normally take a photo or two around hole 5. High Replay value with 3 tee pads on most holes, and a red 27 hole course onsite.

Cons:

Trashcans? there are none...

sometimes tough to find the next hole. Long hike back from X holes.

Other Thoughts:

All in all this is one of my favorite courses, we do a camping trip once a year based around playing both courses. Very fun to play and has a good local players vibe.

I Preferred Blue! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Codorus State Park is the large PA state park on the shores of beautiful Lake Marburg. With three courses here, disc golfers could camp, golf and spend time in the lake. What a ideal vacation spot! The lovely rolling terrain, sometimes open, sometimes wooded with awesome views of the lake and marina make for for great terrain for the courses.

Of the three, I was most impressed with the Blue Course. It's the most wooded, technical of three and features rubber tee pads called the Pro, the AM and the Green tees. The Pro tees are the most competitive. Am's are a solid recreational level and the Green's are mostly Pitch and Putt. Though it's technical, there were no holes where you felt like you were just throwing and hoping. Each holes had a line. You just had to throw with some accuracy at times.

I found the navigation on the Blue course to be a breeze. Each basket had a next arrow sign pointing the way to the next tee box. The Blue course is mostly shady which was great on this 100 degree afternoon.

I didn't think any holes stood out as being signature just a whole series of enjoyable throws with enough challenge to entertain me.

Cons:

I agree the extra holes can be a little hard to locate.
jblough brings up an excellent point about it's too bad you couldn't bring a couple of the open holes from the Red course over here to the Blue (Just for variety sake).

There probably isn't the challenge here for advanced/Pro players.

Other Thoughts:

I could play a lot of rounds on this side of the park without growing bored. Trying out each of the three tee pads gives you so many options. I'd love to return and play Codorus Blue sometime in the future. Maybe camp and enjoy the lake. Many people were on this day.

Plan a day (or weekend) here! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 24, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of holes! 3 tee boxes per hole. Pleasant surroundings. Definitely a MUST play if you're nearby.

Cons:

Course not well marked. No course maps, nor hole details at the tee box. At least it's a nice park and I didn't mind wandering around (or back-tracking) looking for the next hole.

Other Thoughts:

Red course is wide open - good for beginners.
Blue course is a bit tighter.
Best way to play 18 here is start on the back 9 of the blue course then hit the X holes...these are by far the best 9!

Mecca 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First off, Codorus is really two separate 18 hole courses and another two separate 9 hole courses. They are designed such that you can play 27 hole loops, but the 9 hole courses are much more challenging than their 18 hole counterparts. Most, if not all, holes have 3 tees: Rec, Am and Pro. Some tees are asphalt, but most have been converted to flypad. This course requires a variety of shots, some power, and good control. Most of the Cons listed in reviews are unfounded. Almost every basket has an arrow pointing you to the next tee that hangs from under the basket.

Cons:

Any teepad in the shade is likely to be slippery. Course needs more love from the park - debris removal, repainting of baskets, and shuffling of pin positions - there are alternates!

Other Thoughts:

Easily worth the hour drive from Baltimore escape the routine of druid/rock/ptap. Shooting 54 from the long tees is a challenge!

Pros:

Tons of variety overall. Elevation, narrow fairways, open fairways, plenty of trees. I loved all the vegetation but wasn't overpowering to the point where I lost any discs if I strayed off the fairway. Really enjoyed the elevation changes and the baskets were nice.

Cons:

Nothing really, however it looked like the landscaping wasn't as nice as it was when I played here last summer.

Other Thoughts:

Great course, had a blast playing on a perfect day. I enjoyed this course better than the Red course. I like the narrow fairways and trees aka dream smashers.

Cons:

Disc Golf Mecca 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 13, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Codorus Blue has a great range in hole layouts from distance to elevation changes. The park maitainence and volunteers help to keep the course and park looking great. Definitely my favorite side of the two codorus 27 layouts. Plenty of options with three tee pads.

Cons:

Rubber tee pads, that when are wet are great if you want to slip and break something. I've slipped numerous times yet i still keep coming. Be careful and take relief from the pad.

Other Thoughts:

With a good club and good volunteers Codorus could become the disc golf mecca it should be. Seriously 54 holes in one area with multiple tee shots and various safari layouts/20 hole tourney layout.

Gotta Play all 54 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The full 54 at Codorus are what make this course a great course.

Tournaments here are typically 40 holes, with multiple combined holes which really makes the course a challenge.

Blue + X holes are more difficult than the Red + CC holes, but you miss the great views of the lake. You need to play the X holes in a break after Blue 12.

Lots of shot variety, but a bit RHBH friendly. However, many locals have a great forehand which does come in handy here!

Rubber tee pads grip well even in the rain.

A few holes have alternate pin positions, and most are not indicated on the map.

Cons:

This park gets lots of traffic, and road traffic, and other park patrons can be disctracting on the course.

Special layouts for tournaments are not always available ... Hole 12 hay bale set up was sweet!

Other Thoughts:

I would rate Codorus overall a 4.5 ... but when you rate each course separate that is hard to give out.

If you can not play all 54, then at least try to play a tournament 40, those layouts are posted in various news groups.

Beautiful course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

You'll find a great mix of holes at this course. You'll see some flat, wide open holes, and you'll see some hilly, very wooded holes, and you'll see holes in between. You'll see a pin or two on a steep hill to make things more interesting as well. There are three tees you can use on this course; a pro, an amateur, and a beginner/junior tee. You'll see some beautiful views of Lake Marburg on holes 4, 5, and 6. This is a great course for beginners and pros alike.

Cons:

There isn't much that's bad about the course, but it would be nice if there were tee signs with maps on them. A number of tees don't even have measurements on them. The beginner/junior tees don't have measurements at all. There are a couple of holes on the extra course where it's tough to find the beginner tees; look for the red ribbons on 4x and 6x especially. If these corrections were made, then this could be a 5 disc course.

Other Thoughts:

This is a beautiful course that you can enjoy in shorts and sandals... provided that you throw carefully. There are a couple of cases where you can throw it in the woods, so if you're a beginner, you may want to get out the jeans and sneakers. I suggest you check out this course if you can.

Expansive Course With Great Views 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 12, 2003 Played the course:never

Pros:

Views of Lake Marburg, well maintained, hole variety and length, more holes than you know what to do with.

Cons:

Some holes play too close to or among the parking lots and other facilities.

Other Thoughts:

This expansive array of disc golf courses has just about everything needed for a top-notch disc golf experience: shot variety, open and wooded holes, lots of hills, more holes than many people could play in a day, and best of all, fantastic views. Reminiscent of Patapsco Valley but even hillier and with more of a view, Codorus lacks only water challenges and tee pads, but still has much to offer.

When I was there in spring 2003, Codorus had 36 holes, what is now known as the red and blue courses, but did not have the extra nine holes that has been added to each of these courses. Both courses seem equally cool to me - the blue one, comprised of 18 of the original 27 holes, has a better mix of woods and open shots, but the red course has more holes with good views. Holes #5 through #13 on the red course, which I believe were the first nine (of now many) added to the original 27-hole layout, play in and around some picnic areas and parking lots, however, and may have to be skipped during the peak summer season. Both courses feature mostly traditional par 3 holes but some longer holes too - not like Patapsco and Rockburn Branch but still longer than average overall. Unlike those two courses, Codorus does ease up on you with a couple of shorter holes too. Also, except for water, every challenge is presented out here, and more so in the up and down hills category. In fact, Codorus is one of the hillier courses I've played. The blue course is easy to follow, with most holes featuring little signs directing you to the next tee, but I did have some trouble with the red course, since it doesn't have those little signs and isn't as easy to follow either way. But it was worth the effort.

In the end, the lasting impression of Codorus is the setting - the views of Lake Marburg and the surrounding countryside are fantastic. For the most part, the two (plus) courses alone would be well worth a road trip, especially if you're already in say Baltimore as I often am, but the setting makes Codorus one of the best kept secrets in disc golf, featuring great views, a variety of challenges, and not one but two well maintained courses on some pretty land in its own right. Just watch out for the groundhog holes.

Favorite Hole - #9 Red course. Long hole along side of hill with Lake Marbug on two sides and basket right on edge of the lake.

LONG! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

54 holes, all of which are well marked. "Next Tee" signs on every basket. Well maintained and scenic. LONG!

Cons:

LONG! Expect to be here 4-6 hours if you plan on playing all 54 from the pro tees with a friend. A few holes on the red course play too close to parking lots and high traffic areas.

Other Thoughts:

54 holes.. it sounds fun in theory but in reality it is a test of endurance and stamina. We managed to play 46 holes but had to get going since there were 2 other courses we wanted to make it to that day.

The course itself is actually nice with a lot of well marked concrete teepads and what I really liked was each basket had a little plastic arrow attached beneath it pointing you to the next tee. It made navigating the course MUCH easier and you get more play time rather than "look for the next tee" time. A bunch of holes on the red course play along the lake which was quite nice although a bit crowdy in certain areas. The mix of open and wooded holes is nice as you won't spend too much time in the open or in the woods. I think the blue course had you in the woods more often than the red.

Overall I wouldn't say there are any real stand-out holes but overall the course is definitely enjoyable and worth a stop if you're in the area. I'd recommend against playing all 54 as it actually lost it's fun for me at some point and became more of a quest to finish. Sitting at hole #25 and thinking that you're ALMOST halfway done is a daunting thought. If you do plan on attempting the endurance test that is 54 holes be sure to bring plenty of water and like I said in the "Cons", plan on 4-6 hours minimum with two people. We play fairly quickly, didn't lose any discs and ended up making it to hole #46 after 4 hours.
