A few good holes... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Good variety of distances
-Holes 14 through seventeen are heavily wooded, well designed and challenging holes
-Some of the holes have baskets guarded by trees (which make the wide open holes slightly more bearable)
-Decent elevation change on several of the holes
-The baskets are bright yellow on the top and easy to spot
-Each basket has a wood sign on it pointing toward the next hole (though a couple of the signs point in the wrong direction, the sign on the basket for 11 points in the exact wrong direction of the next tee)
-Several picnic tables and benches on the course
-Best holes: 12, 15, 16

Cons:

-This course is extremely hard to navigate at points even with the signs pointing toward the next basket, without a map or a guide you will definitely spend sometime wandering around looking for the next tee-pad. The worst was from the basket for 11 to the next ee-pad, it took us almost 20 minutes to find the next tee-pad.
-Holes 5 through 11 are all straight wide open shots that very few to no obstacles at all on them and these holes get old and boring pretty quickly
-The baskets are pretty old and single-chained so there are skip outs at times
-The tee-pads are terrible they are either really rutted dirt teepads, or badly laid rubber tee-pads
-Very few of the holes have actual tee-signs on them and the couple holes that have tee-signs, the tee-signs seemed to be wrong. Most of the holes are marked by a rock that is painted yellow and has the hole number on it. Some of the paint was chipping off the rocks (The rock for hole 14 had the paint almost all chipped off and it was almost impossible to tell there was suppose to be a tee-pad there). It is also hard to see the rocks sitting on the ground when looking for the next tee-pad, which is part of the reason why navigation is so hard on this course.
-Holes 14-17 have very heavy rough on them that could easily lead to lost discs
-Hole 1 and hole 13 either throw straight over a parking lot or very close to a parking lot. Hole 4 through straight over a bench that is about 10 feet in front of the tee-pad. So there are a few safety issues on this course

Other Thoughts:

Overall, holes 12 and 14-17 are interesting fun holes but the rest of the course is not very exciting. Don't go out of your way to play this course but it isn't that far off I-70 so if you need a break while traveling, this course may feel the disc golf itch.

Fairgrounds has potential, but... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good for early season practice in the high country, when other nearby courses are still buried in snow. Lots of big open spaces to huck as hard as you can. Hole 3 basket is near hole 1 tee for putting practice. The back nine is more interesting, with the Eagle River ready to swallow your discs in several spots. Large horse facility has bathrooms nearby. Plenty of parking.

Cons:

Often very windy, especially the front 9. Several holes are just downright boring (#6, #7?) - a basket in the middle of a big flat field. Easy to throw your arm out on the monster drives. Some thick brush on the back 9 can also swallow discs. A gravel pit operation has consumed many features that made this course more fun over the years, and can kick up quite a bit of dust.

Other Thoughts:

This course has potential. At one time it did have lots of elevation to play off, but that has all been flattened by the gravel pit, which also destroyed the wind breaks. Expansion of the fairgrounds rodeo has put a parking lot in the fairways of holes 1, 11 and 12. Hole 12 should be moved all together at this point. Hole 13 is a downhill with the Eagle River directly behind the pin, and has taken a half-dozen of my discs (be careful during high water!). It might be easier to play the back nine first to warm up your arm before the epic distances on the front nine (again, once upon a time most of the tees were elevated). The tee for hole 2 is difficult to determine now the gravel pit has expanded - we play off the road above #1 for a long downhill. This course needs some love, and a new re-design would make it fun again. I don't recommend playing in mid-summer unless the fields get mowed, or you're in for a long day of searching... Play Vail Mtn, Beaver Creek, or Leadville if you have a choice.
