Short and convenient... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Concrete Tee pads with the hole number and distance stamped in, nice baskets, some signs, and a decent course design. This course is one of the few in the area. It is set in a nice park where the grounds are well maintained. Bathrooms and other facilities are present. Several water holes present (2, 6, 9-16, 18) to include ponds and a creek. I like the layout of hole #2 shooting over the pond.

Cons:

This course is too short. I had a terrible round and still finished at even. One of the holes is only 185 feet. Most of the holes are significantly less than 300 feet. There is no place to really throw a long open drive. IMO too much emphasis was put on placing the pins next to the water. It opened it up for flooding. There was a good storm that came through the day before, and it flooded out the tee pad for #10 and left a lot of water and mud around some of the baskets. There are ducks, geese, and people in the park that get in the way of the round. Navigating this course can be difficult if you don't know it.

Other Thoughts:

This would be a good course to take out beginners or children. The park is scenic.

Put your phone # on your discs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 20, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has nice tee pads and baskets and is easy to navigate. Mostly flatland with gentle slopes on some holes. Good course if you are itching for a chill day with not a lot of workout. Ideal for a quick after work round. The water hazards add some technical shots to the course. Stay dry and watch your score drop!

Cons:

The water on this course is extremely polluted! You do not want to get in this water, bring a "Golden Retriever" or a floater driver. Some of the holes have a nice design, but for the most part the baskets are a straight shot from the tee. There tends to be a lot of foot traffic on the course on weekends or evenings, the layout avoids most of the traffic, but not all so watch out for kids and dog-walkers.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoy playing this course most of the time. Sure, the design isn't that inspired, but it's a great relaxing round...if you stay dry and if there aren't any frolf-oblivious pedestrians. There are a couple of spray-painted pro tees on the sidewalks that add some challenge, particularly #18, across the lake. Also, I heard "Dog Leg Discs" struck a deal with the swampers to sell back lake-bound discs (for a modest fee) with phone numbers on them. Put your number on your disc and you may get a call back.

A Disc Golf Gaggle 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Visually this course is well built and beautiful. The tee pads are huge and widen toward the top. This is nice because quite a few holes are over 300ft and the tee pads provide ample room for a run up. The baskets are high quality as well. The course is mowed and has an open layout. Many of the trees on the course are fairly new and the course will improve as the trees get bigger. For instance, hole number four will eventually require an accurate drive through a dozen trees, but currently the trees are still short enough to play a disc over the top of them. The course is not usually very busy with other disc golfers, although many of the holes pass alongside of pedestrian sidewalks and there does tend to be a lot of other people using the park. Overall, the course flows nicely in a figure eight around and between the lakes.

Cons:

There were a minimum of 700 geese in this park when we began to play our round. The majority of them flew away at the same time and basically blackened the sky. I would normally consider wildlife a benefit of a course, but this was out of control. There is not a single square foot of the park that wasn't covered in goose poop. The lakes, as a result, are absolutely disgusting. Walking into the lakes to retrieve a disc is literally walking into dissolved goose excrement.

This course is straight forward and does not require many tough shots. Unfortunately, the few demanding shots it does have are over the lakes, so many players will take safe shots instead of trying their hand at clearing the water. If you do go for the basket on number two, the opposite bank is farther away than it looks so I recommend trying to overthrow the basket.
On previous visits to this course, I have found the grass soggy and over watered and I have also arrived at this course to find it completely flooded. The park is well maintained by normal standards, but park maintenance has some unique animal and drainage problems with this park that they need to address.

Other Thoughts:

There are not any other courses east of downtown Denver and Exposition Park becomes the default when I am in that area of the city. It is a fun course to play, but be sure to wash your hands and your discs when you finish.

Good family outing course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice inner-city park location with winding cement path throughout. Fairly flat and open and stroller-friendly. Good place for kids to learn.

Cons:

A lot of disrespectful park-goers use this park. Trash in and near stream and ponds. Area serves as a sewer overflow area. Water is nasty and grass can be moist or flooded with heavy rains. Stinky in the summer months at times.

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad place to bring the family if it's not stinky or not wet. Easy to stroller through. Nice playground area too.

bring change of socks! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

Expo park is the king of disc golf in east Denver. OK, as far as I know it is the only course on the east side of Denver. The name of the game here is water. Not many holes are water free. The park centers around a flood area that has a creek that bubbles into three small ponds. The creek area has some bushes to contend with. I brought old shoes and a change of socks and it made for a fun round.

It's a park course with all of the benefits that come from playing in a park. Restrooms and course maps are available at the Expo Center which is right by the parking lot off of E. Exposition Ave. The grass is in good shape. The tee pads are huge and well marked. The two longest holes are 402 and 399, most are about 300. The most fun holes in my opinion, are those which have you clearing water, 2, 12 and 13. Number two has a memorable drop zone.

There is a group of people who were dragging the pond in chest waiters. I saw one of them retrieve discs on multiple occasions for people who were playing. I personally have no problem paying someone for a disc that I threw over or into something I would not myself be willing to go get myself. Nor do I have a problem giving up discs that I don't go after. Some people may see this as a con, but I have to go with "pro" on this issue. Expo has a large enough disc golf scene that I feel the pond people are providing a service.

Cons:

There are some creek crossings that can be confusing at 1-2, 2-3, 7-8, and 14-15. One to two was a longer from-basket-to-tee than I anticipated, I got turned around and had to wait until the next group came along to figure it out. As a park course you may have to deal with people on the bike path or a soccer team practice. The city made a cement ring on the ground around the basket area which seems nice, but also seems to limit the number of pin positions to just the one. The trees are mostly small, 9-12 have some big shady trees that come into play. I imagine scores can be pretty low here.

Other Thoughts:

When I played you could see the high water mark from the most recent storm, by the amount small (gum wrapper/used sucker stick) trash left behind along with twigs and pine needles. The flood must have buried this course, I'd like to hear from a local to know how long it takes to use the course again, when flooded, and if the city ever removes the garbage accumulation.
