Steady course in Aurora 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Open course that is not usually busy allows for mostly unimpeded play except for the occasional pedestrian. Mixes up short and long holes and a decent use of water hazard to make you think twice about your shot.

Cons:

Not enough obstacles for me. Water comes into play on half the holes if you do not like to retrieve your discs from nasty water.

Other Thoughts:

All in all this is a good course and should be on your to play list. Its not a favorite by any means, but a solid course for the denver metro area.

The Expo Experience 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 30, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Exposition Park is a flat, wide open, grassy plot of land interwoven with sidewalks and dotted with various bodies of water. It is truly an ideal course for beginners and intermediates because most of the holes play a straight line across spacious fairways blocked only by small, well-groomed trees. The park's hungry water obstacles claim more than their fair share of plastic, giving Expo a reputation for it amongst Denver's urban courses. Aside from the disc-eating ponds, whose presence poses the only real challenge on the course, it is a well-kept, attractive park. There are usually plenty of people out and about, but pedestrian and bicycle crossings very rarely interfere with the game and you'll never have to throw across a path from the tee box. The course's best features are its spacious cement tee pads displaying the hole number and distance, good quality baskets, trash cans, benches, overall upkeep, convenient location and lastly, let's not forget the 4 fun holes alongside the lightly wooded creek.

Cons:

Hole #1 is in the middle of an open field and cannot easily be accessed from either of the 2 nearby parking lots, which is a serious design flaw. The ponds flood at least a handful of times each year, leaving a ring of debris and trash 20 feet inland. Luckily, it's generally cleaned up in a few days. Even during the most lengthy droughts there are mud puddles behind and in front of many of the cement tees. In various places, the ground beneath the grass is like a soggy sponge and you won't know it until your foot is squishing into it. The tee box for hole #10 is usually covered in a film of greasy mud because it is too close to the shore. Geese overtake the ponds and shores in winter months and their excrement is everywhere.

There is very little elevation change to speak of throughout the course. Multiple pin locations would be a huge improvement. There is a wealth of free space for it on the existing course and as often as the Aurora Parks & Rec crews are out doing maintenance, moving the baskets would seem a very small task.

Other Thoughts:

PARKING: There are 4 different places to park that give access to the course: the main lot at the recreation center off Exposition Ave, the baseball field parking lot (southwest corner of park), streetside parking off Lansing St near basket #4, and the east corner of the Red Lobster parking lot which gives access to tee #12. These options are convenient if you want to play a specific part of the course or change up your starting point.
ALTERNATE TEES: There are some not-so-well-known alternate tees that play from the sidewalks. 2 of them are on the sidewalk to the west of baskets #8 and #10 and another is on the sidewalk behind the #15 tee pad. There is also one faintly marked on the sidewalk behind tee #1, which turns it into a very long fairway drive.

In a nutshell, Expo is a fun, convenient place for a round of 18. It is a valuable location whose radius is notably void of other disc parks. In that regard, Expo is Denver metro's best disc golf offering east of I-25.

Pros:

Varying shots. Water in play on most of the holes. Wide open. Concrete tee boxes.

Cons:

Lack of vertical signs makes finding the next hole difficult. Easy to lose discs on a windy day. The lakes are very dirty and smell awful. Tons of bird droppings.

Other Thoughts:

Skip this course on a windy day.

Nice... if you like geese 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Well maintained grass, open (treeless) park. The ponds make up for the lack of trees regarding obstacles.
The pads are the highest quality I've played on.
Early morning play offers no crowds and friendly walkers.
This is a great first timer park as well. You really have lots of space to see what your discs will do.

Cons:

Be advised that the flow of the park is very odd. I would strongly advise using this website and print off the scorecard that includes a map. Signage pointing out the direction of the next tee would be helpful.
Use caution in the mornings, the sprinklers come on without warning and use non-potable water.
It's evident to me this site is a former wetland as the soils do not drain well, and this is also the source of the odor noted in other comments.

Other Thoughts:

I don't want to make this report sound awful. It really is a good park. Just bring a towel and be ready to wipe goose poo off your shoes and discs.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Although the course is pretty open OB sidewalks and water hazards make placement very important on 66% of the holes. Course is rather short. Hole 4 marked >400 is not 400'. Unless I can throw a Buzzz or a Pred spike hyzer 400+. Hole 8 plays longest, but is reachable for the average 925+ rated player. The course is well manicured, and mostly disc golf only used. The paths do get used, but usually only have to wait for 1 jogger per hole max.

Cons:

Beginners get discouraged quickly losing discs often here. Only one placement per hole. While the concrete rings and gravel under the pins look great, a prefect shot that would usually stick in the lush grass of this course will often skip for a difficult putt.

Other Thoughts:

This was my home course when I was learning how to play. Helped me develop a decent grasp of when taking risks is worth it. But now, its a less than exciting course, with my personal course record being a -16. Avg closer to a -6. Definately duce or die when playing competitively.

2. Park atmosphere is comfortable
3. Water can be a psychological opponent

Cons:

1. Lack of trees and obstacles
2. Foul smelling water

Other Thoughts:

- Looks like the park ponds have recently been cleaned out
- Some of the bushes/trees near the creek have been cut down, making it less likely to lose a disc in the weeds

Pros:

This being my first stop on the way in from the airport, I wasn't disappointed, totally different feel than play at sea-level; nice creek running through the course; three frozen ponds with geese galore - must have been at least 2000+ out there; nice little course with excellent tee pads and baskets.

Cons:

Tons of bird droppings, I thought they were dog droppings

Other Thoughts:

Santizer/towel for you and your discs, bag to put your shoes in when done. Keep your disc out of creek if possible, you'll thank me later

Worth taking a gander 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

*Water: The lakes and connecting creeks make this course. They add beauty and most of the challenge. Without the water this would be a pretty open and boring course. The water is in play or in view on 11 holes. According to my preferences, my favorite holes are the shots over the water. This risk vs. reward of the water provided the greatest challenge and interest for me. My favorite was hole 13. It's a challenging length at 355 ft, slight downhill, with the lake all along the right side making it risky for RHBH. I also liked the drive over the lake on 2, over the corner of the water on 12, and with the lake on the left on 18.
*Beauty: The verdant grass was very well mowed; combined with the water this had a serene and orderly feel to it.

Design-
*The course plays in a figure 8 pattern around 2 lakes so this creates shot variety with the water being sometimes on the left and sometimes on the right side.

Basics-
*Tee pads- excellent. Long, concrete, trapezoids.
*Baskets- first class. Mach III with number plates.
*Navigation- generally clear and easy, but the map is needed in a few spots.

Amenities-
*There's a nice big course map on a park sign, as well as 2 maps available online. There are good restrooms, a scorecard online, a very good warm up basket, and numerous benches and trash cans along the walking trail.

Cons:

Basics
-Tee signs: There are none. The hole number and length is embedded in the concrete tee pads. This necessitates a bit more effort to scout where to go next, but since the course is so open it's not too hard to navigate.

Design-
-Terrain variety: very low, since most holes are open grass with only a few trees here and there. 13 Open grass / 5 Mixed with a few scattered trees or bushes. Most of the putting areas were also too open and thus mundane for my preferences.
-Fairway shape variety: lacking. Because the terrain is so open most of the holes are straight and open shots. There were no right doglegs at all. 13 St/ 5 Left
-Elevation variety: also lacking. 10 Flat/ 3 Up/ 5 Down. Most holes are flat and any elevation changes are slight, only ranging from 3 to 8 ft.
-Length variety: not much on the standard layout. Holes only range from 190 to 400 ft, but 14 are 200-399 ft. (2 of 190-195/ 8 of 200-299/ 6 of 300-399/ 2 of 400 ft.)

Other Thoughts:

Course Level = White (most suited for Intermediate players rated 875-925)
I only throw about 270 ft., with occasional bursts to 300 ft, so this course was a good length for me. It was fun to card 5 birdies.

Since it was July when I played, the geese and ducks were minimal, so they added to the ambiance and weren't a problem as other reviewers have mentioned.

Overall, I'd play this course again if I happened to be in the vicinity, but I think it might get old if I played it too often. The course is pretty, and I like the water holes, but it's just too open and doesn't have enough elevation change for my taste.

high risk/reward 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice, well tended park. Concrete tees were generally in good condition, though shorter and wider than most. Nice mach 3 baskets in good condition. The course plays over ponds and creeks on 11 of the 18 holes, which create some high risk/reward drives.

Cons:

Mostly shorter holes. Tee 16 is not level, or even close to it. The ponds are filthy, nasty, smelly water with pond scum galore.

Other Thoughts:

The course was a bit too easy for my tastes. Every hole is a birdy attempt unless you shank your drive. There were only a handful of trees scattered on the course, and the only other obstacle was the ponds. Retrieving a disc from the pond SUCKS! If it wasn't a brand spanking new disc I lobbed in there, I would have left it. I would play this course again if in the area or for a tourny, but wouldn't go out of my way to play it casually again.

Good, but nothing special 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

In a well kept, mostly open park, this course is great for those that can take risky shots over and around water. Not much accuracy is needed to conquer this course, but confidence is required to blast over water hazards. The fairways are very green with top-notch baskets and large, unique tee pads with numbers and hole lengths. The pins that don't play around the water are mostly flat and open making easy targets for beginners. The holes are mostly short ranging in length from 150'-350' and one 400' hole. Young trees on open fairways can make holes tougher in the future.

Cons:

Although I have only played it once, I did not find this course very challenging at all. The holes are too flat and open. The course water hazards may frustrate some disc golfers. The pond is very disgusting, so be careful what you throw where it is in play. You don't want to go in that water! Geese have maintained their habitat in the area and leave droppings everywhere.

Other Thoughts:

Stay off of the course at night because this is not a very good area of town to be at after dark.

Fun Course, but... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 10, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Expo is a wide-open course with few obstacles, but the great use of the creek and ponds as water hazards make it more fun than most field-golf courses. The pads are well made and level and targets are properly maintained. It is intuitively planned and number markers on the pads make it difficult to get lost.

Cons:

The water is gross. On a hot day it can stink a little. Going in the water is not for the faint-of-heart. I read some complaints about goose poop everywhere. That's Northern Colorado. The park is so pretty that if I were a goose, I'd want to be there, too.

Other Thoughts:

This course is great for water practice. Put it out there and hope it fades (or turns) back. I score it 3/5 discs.

Picturesque Disc Golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

DGA double chain baskets in good condition. Huge concrete tee pads. Ample parking. Practice basket. Course map sign. There are enough benches and trash cans located at various points along the walking/jogging trail. Hole information etched in concrete tees makes it difficult to vandalize. Very nice multi-use park.

The latter part of the course does a figure-eight around the lake which works nicely to keep a balance between favoring RHBH vs. LHBH shots. There's some minor elevation changes on a few holes.

Cons:

Basket #9 and tee #10 are close to the lake edge and show visible evidence of frequently getting flooded. A local told me that the course doesn't drain very well and is often very soggy after rain. Hole information etched in concrete tees makes it difficult to update distances if baskets move as was apparently the case on #4: as the tee it says 402' when in reality it's 329'. But seeing how the baskets are installed with a concrete ring around them, moving in the future seems unlikely. Being a multi-use park there may be some holes where walkers or joggers interfere with throws.

Other Thoughts:

The lack of traditional tee signs isn't that big a deal since the tee pads are so ginormous, they're easy enough to spot if you're looking for them.

The course plays mostly open shots with pin placement or water crossings adding the challenges and keeping it interesting. However, this is not that challenging of a course for a good REC player or above; I shot a 51 my first time there. This was the easiest of the seven 18+ hole courses I played on my Denver trip. I didn't realize there were alt/pro/long tees until I got to #18 (which is a really cool shot from the long tee). A local told me that the alt/pro/long tees are mostly around the sidewalk marked with white paint. It was a very enjoyable round of golf at Expo and I would easily go back again, though I'd try to find the alt tees the next time.
