Jack Culverhouse DGC

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 14, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-- Plenty of long, open holes to air out your arm.
-- Restrooms on site (across parking lot from DG course, by ball fields).
-- Nice baskets (now all MVP Blacks after three DGAs apparently left from previous incarnation of the course were replaced).
-- Nice concrete tee pads.
-- Water in play on several holes, including some water carries.
-- Park appears to be well maintained. The holes on the far back side weren't as manicured, but a redesign took those holes out and replaced them with wooded holes.
-- Beautiful bridges to cross the creek.
-- Multiple tee pads on about half of the holes.

Cons:

-- Navigation. A redesign from 18 to 20 holes made this both better and worse. There are now fewer holes in the open area near the parking lot, but the tee signs have not been updated. For example, hole 4 is labeled hole 6, based on the tee sign. The new holes in the woods have no tee signs, and there is no map on site.
-- Baskets/fairways too close together. From the No. 1 tee, you can see at least half a dozen baskets, and none of them is the basket for No. 1.
-- Baskets are not numbered.
-- How do you know which basket to play from which tee when everything is close together, nothing is numbered (at least not correctly), and you can see multiple baskets from almost every tee? Each tee has what looks like a decent sign, but direction and relationships to other objects are sometimes confusing or wrong. Twice on my first visit I threw to a basket a second time and didn't realize it until I walked up to locate my drive. On my second visit, that only happened once.
-- The pavilion with picnic tables looks nice, but they are in danger on No. 5. As I played on my first visit, an elderly couple hurried out of the pavilion, apparently scared I might hit them with a disc.
-- No seating at the tee pads.
-- Walking path frequently comes into play.

Other Thoughts:

-- This course needs navigational help. Numbering the baskets would be a great start, but several times you need a marker in the fairway indicating the direction to the basket.
-- Some of the best individual holes have some of the biggest problems. For example, No. 7 (a slightly shorter version of old No. 9) is an epic hole: 565 feet. 125-foot water carry across the creek. 340 foot, tree-line fairway that is wide enough to be fair but narrow enough to force you to make good shots and with rough you definitely want to avoid. There were two problems: The fairway is hidden from the tee, and you might think you are shooting around the trees to the right. Also, since that is blind from the tee, you can get thrown on. Once you get on the fairway and play the hole, your only option wass to walk back down the fairway, out of sight of the tee and golfers. The redesign takes you away from the tee to play 8. No. 18 is a gorgeous ace run (231 feet) from the trees that used to force you to hit a smallish window to cross the creek. Two problems now. The first is that the only basket you can see from the tee is the wrong basket. Since that basket is about 250 feet away, the difference in distance does not alert you to the fact that you are throwing to the wrong basket. The second problem is the "widow" is almost completely closed due to overgrowth. You are now throwing over tress/bushes or around them.
-- I am not a fan of the longer, open holes. If you enjoy that, you'll likely rate this course higher. I originally rated this a 2.5 but raised it to 3.0 based on improvements before the redesign. I'm sticking with 3.0 for now, but I could see this as a 3.5 once the tee signs are in completed and a map is provided.

A Great Start 2+ years drive by

Pros:

The next tee can be found with no too much effort (especially if you look at the previous tee sign for indications as to where the next tee is, which I neglected to do). There was not any excessive walks between holes and hole 9 finished not too far from hole 1. The baskets are new and are in great shape, and they all happened to be assembled correctly.

Cons:

This is expected on most brand new courses, but the tees are rudimentary (grass with a board marking the front).

Looking at the land, it pretty much necessitated either a clockwise or counterclockwise progression of the holes, and since counterclockwise was chosen, there is a preponderance of right to left shots from the tee. The ones that are not could be attacked from both sides, except for hole #4, which, because of a mandatory in front of the tee, must be thrown from left to right. I didn't see any need for a mandatory on this hole, except to create a hole that needs to be thrown left to right, to help to counterbalance the other holes.

There were no bridges going over the creek, that is crossed on a couple of holes, necessitating either a long walk to the street, or an attempt to ford the stream, which could be a little tricky.

Other Thoughts:

The course is brand new, and I expect it to improve in time, especially with amenities such as bridges, which are needed.

Unfortunately, the land itself is the limiting factor from this course ever becoming a 5, but I think the course designers did a fine job with what they were given, and I am confident that future reviewers will tend to give this course a higher rating, as improvements are made to it. I drove 40+ miles to play it, and I glad I did. There were already some locals playing (rec players), and they gave me an ego boost with their compliments, and I was able to give them some pointers to significantly improve their throwing. Hopefully, some other experience players will make their way out there, and encourage the locals they meet up with, and we will have a club starting up there.

I don't put many reviews on here, despite my experience and number of courses played. If you find inaccuracies with my review, please let me know.
