Pros:
You drive quite a ways through the park to finally find the course. There is a large course sign here complete with map. The small parking lot has space for maybe 20 cars. There is a practice basket here, as well. The signs and baskets are the same as the Tradewinds course. There are multiple concrete tee pads on each hole, sometimes two and some have three. They are signed as Rec (Reds), Am (Whites) and Pro (Blues). Some holes have two baskets, both a green Prodigy and a Discatcher.
Holes 1-12 play out one and back to the start, then # 13 to 18 play off in the opposite direction and return back with 18 finishing at the parking lot. This is a lovely park. It doesn't have all the water hazards that most Florida courses have but of course, it shares the Florida flatness. The multiple tees and baskets, although somewhat confusing, should provide some variety for most any level of player.
The main challenges here are some water on holes 2, 3 and 13, par 4 distances from the Pro Blue tees, the road and boardwalk and the tress and jungle on many holes.
For the Signature hole here at Markham DGC, I nominate both basket placements on # 13. 13 is about a 325' hole with a lake on your left side. Both baskets are cleverly placed up in the woods on your right. The Discatcher is marked by two small red ribbons. I'm not sure If these ribbons indicate a Mando or just show you that the basket is back in this area with the basket set up high on this path. I like it either way.
The green Prodigy basket is farther away but it's set up and away on this 10' pile of dirt. It's a wonderful placement, too. It's kind of a waste to have them both on the same hole as most players will only experience one or the other.
I also enjoyed the clever little basket placement on # 14. It's just 152' from the Whites but the basket is set in this sloping little hill. Here in Florida, it appears any little bump that has a basket on it gets me all amped up.
Cons:
Florida flat.
Having three tees and multiple baskets certainly keeps things fresh for locals but it is a bit confusing for the traveling player.
Other than 13 and 14, I was slightly underwhelmed by the experience here.
Players say it can be very warm here so bring water.
Bicyclists and cars can be present so make sure the coast is clear before teeing off.
Other Thoughts:
Just as I was finishing, two total novice players showed up with two discs each. Having completed my 18, I felt that had, at least, a working knowledge of how the course plays. As I tried to explain to them, I realized these two were in so far over their head. They had no clue about following any course, no chance of tackling a course with multiple pads and multiple baskets or a course with water or jungle lined fairways. I watched them tee off on # 1 and the second guys throws this wild-assed forehand about 300' well into the jungle. I'm sure that disc is gone forever. I have to say, Markham DGC is not exactly beginner friendly.
