enjoyable course drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Markham is a beautiful park that has just about everything you can think of going on at the park, including an RC airplane runway near the course. A lot more to do here than just play disc golf. Though the course itself is fairly secluded with lots of holes playing through the woods. And the holes that are out near the road aren't too busy with traffic because it's so far in the park where the course is. It's a good 3-5 minute drive once you enter the park to get to hole 1. Some benches and a little pavilion at hole 1 are really nice to just sit and view the lake. No bathrooms, looks like everyone ducks into the woods. If you got to go, do it when you enter the park.

The course itself has multiple tees and pins and is pretty easy to follow. Though my first time through I definitely needed to pull out the map and figure things out. The course kind of plays in a figure 8 starting from the parking lot. There isn't a lot of thick jungle-type rough that is found in a lot of Florida courses. The holes have a lot of variation and there are some memorable spots throughout the course. There are a few tricky water shots if playing the long tees. Most can be avoided easily from the shorter tees. But don't let that scare you, Florida has tons of water and these are on the easier side of the water holes.....well mostly.

Concrete tees from what I remember. 2 baskets per hole. Well maintained. Overall a solid course.

Cons:

It's inland slightly from Ft Lauderdale so that means it gets hot. I've played here 3 or 4 times. A few times in February where the weather was ideal, the course was dry, and there were no bugs to deal with. I have also played here in June when it was so hot and humid with mosquitos a constant annoyance. Yet, I still played all 18 that day and enjoyed the course enough to want to come back.

No bathroom always sucks, but for those who don't mind the woods, there are plenty to hide in.

It's flat. If it rains, it's wet.

Other Thoughts:

Markham is a solid course. I've played nearly 50 courses in Florida and I would put it in the top 1/3 of the ones I have played. It has some design elements that I really like. I think for the most part the holes were fair and played cleanly. Not a ton of nasty rough, but there are a few spots that are thick if you aren't controlled. For the area, I really enjoy this course and it's definitely worth a play if you are nearby.

Great Local Course in a Great Park! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+Multiple concrete tee pads on each hole (Rec/AM/PRO)
+Signage indicating pin placements, distances, par, and next hole direction.
+Parking area has a practice basket by the tee pads at hole #1 and a big disc golf sign with the course layout and general rules for newer players.
+Course layout circles the back end of the park and ends up back at the starting parking area.
+Good variety of hole difficulty with wide open, wooded/tunnel shots, and elevated pin locations.
+Plenty of signs throughout the course reminding players to clean up after themselves.
+Very scenic course, specifically holes 13-15.

Cons:

-No signage towards the main park entrance indicating where the disc golf course is located. This can be confusing for first-time players to the course.
-Lack of water fountains or bathrooms on the course (plenty of woods, trees, and lake water, however).
-A lot of the holes are by the main roadway to the outdoor gun range, which has a lot of runners, bikers, and cars traveling through at times.
-Some holes could use a pin placement identifier (at least on the Rec/AM signage). For example, hole #13 has two pin locations, but it is difficult to see which location the hole is at from the pad, making disc selection and shot planning more time-consuming.
-Some holes can be difficult to play after a rainstorm passes through. For example, on one of my recent outings, the Rec pad and some of the AM pad on hole #8 were submerged underwater, and this was a few days after the last storm passed through.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I like playing this course when I can. It's close to my work office (~5 minutes away) and I usually have a good time playing a round in a timely manner. I like the elevated pins on holes #13 and 14 (when in that position) and the amount of par 4 holes to work with.

A few things to note for new players to the course:
• There are a few water holes early in the course and on holes #13-15 that a towel would be helpful to bring to help dry yourself/discs faster.
• Speaking of water, make sure to bring plenty to drink as the course can be quite hot, even in the early mornings/late afternoons.
• Make sure to keep a close eye on the road and throw when you have clearance (on holes 5-6, 12, and 16-18, particularly). I have almost hit a few people on bikes that rapidly came down the road while I was teeing off.

Park Em at Markham 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 13, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

18 holes with multiple pads on every hole (most have three, some have two) and many holes have two baskets, a Prodigy T1 (green) and a silver Chainstar (holes 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13-15, and 18); single basket holes are the T1. Good mix of wooded and slightly more open holes with OB water on a few holes and an OB road on most of the others. Challenges all levels, from making birdies from the short pads to tight lines and huge drives for the pro players. Four holes play as par four and depending upon your pad and basket choice, all four can be birdied or can make for a really long day. Does not interfere with other park amenities. Practically right off the highway. Good usage of the "hills" on 13 and 15 (T1 basket)

Cons:

Being a bit inland, it gets even hotter and more humid in the summer, make sure you have lots of water. The pond is not too deep if you're just a few feet in, but it drops quick, use caution. I mentioned the OB park road that comes into play on a few holes. While it's not a really busy road, there will be cars, so exercise caution and wait for them to pass (same goes for the cyclists who use that road too). Flat, but typical for south Florida.

Other Thoughts:

Bring headphones if you get distracted easily, as there is a shooting range that can be heard on holes 13-15, as well as a model airplane field near holes 4-7. I thoroughly enjoy playing Markham, and it fits in quite well with a number of the other courses Broward County has to offer. It is not a stand out course, but it's very solid. Come challenge yourself at Markham. You'll be glad you did.

Solid, Just Needs Time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Markham Park is an excellent area, with plenty of outside activities aside from disc golf available.

Brand new, with a great course map and excellent baskets.

A bit scenic, especially in the holes by the lake and in the woods.

Good course variety (a mandatory shot between two trees, a few holes with a water hazard)

At some of the holes, the park supplies 10-foot long rubber pipes with metal hooks attached to the ends, for fetching frisbees out of the water or high trees.

Cons:

No concrete tees (just two red stones per hole)

Weather can be an issue, with virtually no shade.

Located next to a frequented road, so expect to wait for cars to pass at some points.

Ignorant campers occasionally set up right next to baskets or in the middle of the course.

The poles are placed in obscure, unguarded locations (propped up against random trees, on the edge of the water) and probably will be subject to theft or disappear after a storm.

Navigation occasionally an issue (individual course maps often blow away from their markers in the wind, later 9 holes located on an obscure, unmarked path)

Other Thoughts:

Markham Park Disc Golf seems to have earned a bad reputation for being "incomplete", judging from the ratings. However, it's noticeably improved in the 2 months or so between my visits. Again, for the most part, it's well mapped, has decent variety and challenge in its holes, is nice to look at, and even offers the handy retrieval poles. With time, the course might install concrete tees and better course maps to ease navigation. All in all, aside from its poor location right next to a commonly-used road, give this one a shot.
