Most fun when you start on hole 6. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good baskets, clean, not many people playing.

Cons:

ridiculously long holes for some.

Other Thoughts:

I do not have much of a drive so I start at hole 6. There is a parking lot next to the tee pad for that hole at the pavilion. I usually only play 10 holes, starting at 6, when I go since I have my daughter there and I also really do not like the Par 5s.

Not fun, frustrating 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It's a disc golf course. 18 holes.

Cons:

Way too hard. Way too long. Can only hit par if you are a pro and having a good day. Not good for average players and definitely not good for beginners or anyone wanting to have fun.

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, I was born in Austin and have been playing disc golf as an amateur since I was a teen. This is probably one of my least favorite courses. Last time inlayed I could not believe hole 4 was a par 4. It's ridiculous. I felt like it was a waste of the park to make it so difficult. I feel bad for new bees and kids coming to try the sport and leaving frustrated. I wanted to call the parks and ask them to consider making it easier or some optional tees for those who are not blue chip pros. I would be happy if they made a sign that warned people about the difficulty.

Established Balanced Long Old Park Course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

My personal favorite holes were 9, 10 and 12, which is most of the shorter technical holes that find the trees. The rest of the park is out in the open. 4,5 and 6 are very long and open. Number four uses a creek and is near the lake, evidence that the open holes are not entirely barren. The mix of holes is nice considering the age of the course, designed in 1991. Once you have finished playing six you have reached a disproportionate amount of the walking you are going to have to do, which is nice because the round feels easier after that point. Provided the wind has not zapped away your hydration the rest of the course is relative child's play.

The course and park and parking are all easy to find. There were no crowds when I played it, in many of the other area courses you have to contend with crowds. There are four holes over 600 feet long, so this is where it gets it deserved reputation as a long course. There is variable hole length though, where 1000 feet may seem long (two holes), there are five holes under three hundred feet and another handful of holes that are in that medium-long distance. Nice rolling hills and a smattering of trees make for pretty good basket placements.

Cons:

What I mentioned before about 4, 5, and 6 being wide open is disappointing because I feel that it sets a negative tone for the match. I was trying to bomb which is not a big part of my game and I paid the price for it. This is a wide open course and the wind seemed to have more speed here than it did at the house when I decided to play Old Settler's.

In the Austin area there are better and newer options. The course reminds me of an old shopping mall, the one that nobody goes to anymore, you can still appreciate how it's nice and there are still fun things about it, but the new mall, like the newer courses across town blow it away.

The long walks from basket to tee, from tee to drive to drive to drive to basket make for a long day. Yes multiple drives on one hole, all fighting the wind I might add, and it felt repetitive. I had a guide my first time and I felt that I would have had a scouting mission or two to go on my first time, so bring a map.

Other Thoughts:

I'm proud to say that noted DGCR member Bevo was my tour guide. He bombs. I took to trying to bomb myself which only made my game worse. I imagine if I develop an arm and wanted to play in the wind, this could be one of those parks to seek out. I could see taking short cuts and just skipping the holes that I am not in the mood to play.

I recommend this course to people who love to bomb and dislike crowds. The Austin area has at least five courses I would recommend before this course and I would caution noodle arms against it, because it will suck the fun factor away. The entire short time I lived in Austin, I only played here twice. Not because it is a bad course. There are just too many other great options in the area compared to this course.

Old Settlers Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 18, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This park is very big and takes forever to play, so you and some friends can go out, have fun, and just make a day of it. This course is very drive-oriented (2 holes being over the 1000' mark and there's one 600' par 3), so if that's your thing, you'll probably like it. The layout of the course doesn't seem to interfere too much with other aspects of a multi-use park. We only had to give people the "heads up!" one or two times. The design of holes #13b-16 was really neat and had almost a battlefield feel to them. One all of those, you're throwing back and forth across a big, open field from the crests of surrounding twenty-foot hills with rocks piled up next to the bulkhead for the pond on one side. My personal favorite hole at the park was #16. That is the only hole at the park where you have to throw across a significant amount of water. The tee box is on a concrete pathway going over the dam for the pond, and when walking up to it, it looks alot farther than it actually is to the other side. I felt so sure I was going to lose a disc in the water that I wrote "Hello Round Rock" on the back of my driver. For the most part, the holes aren't too terribly difficult to find; although I would recommend bringing a map if its your first time.

Cons:

Alot of the holes are repetitive. Drive.....walk......drive.......walk.....drive.......walk.....etc. There isn't a whole lot of trees involved, (maybe 3 or four holes) out of 21. So, there aren't alot of technical shots through wooded areas. When I went, the bathrooms were still closed from the freeze a few weeks prior, (and like I previously stated, there aren't alot of trees to go and sneak off behind).

Other Thoughts:

The three extra holes are not marked with signs - consult your map. All-in-all, this course seems like a good one for a power player, but if you're like me and prefer really wooded, technical shots, you're better off just continuing on to East Metro in Manor.

Long course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has some really long open shots. The scenery was very nice with the pond, the park is large so even though there were other players and people in the park, there was never an issue of people being in the way. Some challenging elevation changes made it a fun course to play.

Cons:

With quite a few holes being large and open the wind was a beast here. Hole 4 is over 1000 ft. We were playing into the wind, and it's supposed to be par 4. I'd have to play in calm conditions, but after playing yesterday I feel like the pars may be a little low. The front nine you play uphill quite a lot and we were into the wind, so I enjoyed the back 9 much more.

Other Thoughts:

This course would have been very fun with calmer conditions. It reminded me of Lindsey Park Blue course in Tyler Tx without all the trees in the way (I hate those trees). It's a good place to really stretch your arm and go for distance. I liked the course. Be sure to get a picture of the map on your way in, the navigation is a little confusing between a couple holes, and many of the holes can't be seen from the tee boxes due to distance, hills or turns. I want to play this one again.

From a new player 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Note: I'm new to playing, keep that in mind.
I love the openness on almost all holes here. Shots that would have gone deep into the treeline elsewhere were very forgiving here.
The course layout is easy to follow...usually. There are a couple points that took us a few minutes to find the next tee, but we quickly learned the "follow the path in the grass" rule.

Cons:

Aside from launching 2 discs irretrievably into the pond? It's incredibly windy there.

Other Thoughts:

As a beginner, I love this course. I'm still learning to drive properly, so the forgiving nature of the park appeals to me greatly. I've dug around in the trees in Cat Hollow way too much recently.

I actually like the mixed nature of the park. You'll have a BBQ going on, people walking their dogs, riding horses around, sometimes bands playing there, and it just feels so peaceful there. Everything is in bloom as of the time of this writing, and it is beautiful.

Beginners in the area, come try this out. You wont regret it.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 12, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Maybe three or four good holes. However if you want to learn the wind better, get great at long drives and like playing big bomber courses you should check it out. I'll admit it's fun from time to time to go throw a crusher or two on almost everyhole. This course will help you gain distance like none other around if that's an area you need to improve, the same as going to a big field.

Cons:

Least favorite of mine. Might as well play in a circle through a huge hay pasture with 3 or 4 trees. No challenge what so ever just drive after drive and putt. Hey, I guess one more good side is that you could play the entire course with 3 discs and lighten up the load for the 10 mile hike in 30mph wind!.

Other Thoughts:

Sorry Round Rockers, I know you guy's love it, but you gotta have more than a cannon at most courses.

Big Arm Country! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a little of everything. the concrete tee pads are nice. Each hole has a large sign with a picture of the hole, the distance, and par. Water is a great hazard on holes 1,2,4, and 16. The grounds are always kept in really good condition. Wind can be a challenge, but it is just a part of the game. I love this course and play it at least 3 times a week.

Cons:

I love how long the course is, but it is not a good idea to play it in the heat we have had lately. Hit it early or in the evening. Be conservative around the water or you WILL lose a disc.

Other Thoughts:

If you have a BIG ARM and are not scared of a good hike, you will dig this course!

Worth the trip 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 12, 1999 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good use of rolling hills and the few trees that are there. The last half of #4 is a really nice hole by itself (the first 500' or so is just across a field to get you near the creek). Nicely mowed so you can roll the long ones. That dam hole ;-) You're near Austin which is my favorite place in Texas that I've been to so far.

Cons:

Not alot of obstacles (but the ones that are there are usually in play), Not much shade to be found on a hot day.

Other Thoughts:

I really like this course and make a point of heading out here when ever I get to Austin. The wind has never seemed that intimidating to me and can be really fun if it catches your roller just right (not so fun when it catches it wrong). When the breeze is kicking up it adds an element of adventure to those normally routine 15-20 putts. The shortage of obstacles result in some of the pin settings being close to said obstacles, a case in point being the #4 pin nestled in a grove only a few feet from the creek but I find that preferrable to the alternative of a bunch of long, open field holes. If you get the chance, go to The County Line and get The Big Daddy, a huge plate overflowing with some of the best beef ribs I've had.

Tale of 2 Courses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are actually 2 courses here...or at least alternate teepads for the back half of the course that will keep you away from the lake and the 1000ft holes.

Personally I find the alt tee course to be a lot more fun as it gives you a wide range of shots without having to worry about losing a disc in the lake or deal with gale force winds. Basically you park by the play area near the back nine and there are some dirt teepads right by the lot.

Pros on the main course is that it will open up your big arm throws and it will teach you how to play in the wind. It will teach you how the wind will affect your putting. That said, it's not a course for most if you don't have a big arm and if you're playing par 3s.

Lack of people there. You can pretty much have the place to yourself on most days so you can work on different aspects of your game without having to worry about holding people up. And you can go out with large groups playing doubles without spending half the day letting people play through

Cons:

Lack of course direction is pretty huge here especially on the alternate tees so if you don't have someone who's played there a few times leading you, you're probably going to be walking around aimlessly.

The cons on the actual course are part of what makes it unique and that's the long long open holes and dealing with the wind. This is not a course for beginners. Find someone who knows the alternate course and you will be much happier with the round. Personally, I like playing in the wind though of my friends I think I may be the only one. So as a possible con here, it is pretty much always windy.

Last time we played there with the alternate tees we shot up on one of the baskets then waited for a group to play the main course on that basket...which ended with half of our discs being moved because the kids grabbed our discs and the dad with them didn't stop them. It was pretty obvious that they were our discs and the dad clearly saw us. Not a course con, per se, but just a bit of warning that 2 groups playing the same basket could cause some issues.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, this course has something for everyone. If you're new to the sport or don't want to deal with wind/water, stick to the short course. If you're looking for a challenge and want to work on different aspects of your game, there's room here for you as well.

There really are some great holes there in the back area so if you are feeling beat down after the first few extremely long holes on the main course, don't give up. If you can't figure out what box goes to which pin...just make up your own course if no one is around.

Very long! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 15, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

Old Settler's is on a very nice piece of land that contains a picturesque creek and lake that do come into play on some holes. Hole #16 is fun- you tee off from the top of dam across a corner of the lake.

Cons:

The front 9 is very wide open- the only obstacles on many of the holes are extreme length and wind. (Look at the pictures of holes 3,4,5,6,7,8 and you will see what I mean.) If you can't throw over 400' feet you will probably hate these 6 holes. I felt like the holes were long just to be long, no obstacles, just long drive practice.

I also had a hard time navigating the course. Signs were inaccurate. Several long walks to the wrong tee! This is mainly due to 1000' holes with no defined fairways- you have no idea where to go when you can't see anything.

I also played at a time when the Austin area was hit hard with flooding rains. The fairways were very wet, making it even harder to throw far.

I think some am. tees would improve the longer holes in order to appeal to a wider range of disc golfer. Maybe they could define a fairway on the barren holes by mowing the grass at different lengths and then maybe plant a couple trees.

For such a prized course it seems to lack many things that exist on other top notch courses I have played.

Other Thoughts:

The back 9 is much better than the front in my opinion with some trees in play. I was so tired after the front that I was not able to enjoy the back.

If you have a monster arm and are looking for a place to let 'er rip, then come here- you will probably love this course. If you can't throw long bombs, then I would recommend skipping it. It looks like the other reviews reflect this, some people love it, some hate it.

My rating is primarily due the monotony of holes 3-8 and difficulty in navigation. This is a hard course to rate. I originally gave it 2.0, but have re-evaluated everything.

From a distance challenged point of view playing it the first time:
Front 9- 2.0
Back 9- 3.0
Detailed signs and maps would raise it by 1.0

Pros and distance specialists would probably give this a 4.0+

Old Settlers' 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Easily accessible, plenty of parking. Course design takes advantage of a beautiful setting around a lake, takes advantage of seemingly unlimited acreage and utilizes elevation changes, patches of oaks, and other Texas trees and wide open fields. Bevo hits on something that struck me most about my round at Old Settlers' today and added to the enjoyment - the course is not crowded or slammed into a small park. There's just plenty of space for disc golf, for hikers, cyclists, everyone. Great park. I found it easy to clear my head and get into my game. This course requires every shot in the bag and more. I will have fun trying to figure these holes out, trying to figure out where I can pick up a stroke or two. I know that playing this course will greatly improve my overall play and I enjoyed the chance to really work on my drive/distance. I appreciated the course design, the course starts out giving the player a chance to make some birdies, get warmed up before the par 4's/5's. While there are several long holes, there are also several birdie opportunities.

Cons:

#4's hole map was confusing, I have read on this site that the hole has been changed and the map not yet updated - that makes sense now. (as it turned out, #4 basket hugs the creek beyond the footbridge) Couple of ultra long holes that had me wondering why not break up into some long par 3's - Make 27 holes of world class disc golf. In my opinion Old Settlers is plenty of course even without #4, #17. No bathrooms nearby (that I could see)

Other Thoughts:

There was no wind when I played on Sunday. I understand that I was extremely lucky because of that fact. Having played the course I am not sure if my experience would have been the same with a constant 20 mph wind, talk about a monster! This course has moved up to the #1 slot in the Austin, Texas area - in my book. I wish it was closer, I would try to play once a week minimum. This course earns 5 stars if the two 1000' holes are broken up, the other holes on the course are incorporated to make this a 27 hole course. I am a fan of having all par 3's - even if a few are long 500-600' range to keep the pros happy.

What a challenge! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 30, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is extremely challenging! There are two holes that are over 1,000 feet long. There are great concrete tee pads, good baskets, and signs that show you where the basket is located, the distance to the basket, as well as par for the hole. The course is in a pretty area of the park. There is a creek with water in it even in the dead heat of the summer that comes into play on many holes. There is also a lake that comes into play on a couple of holes. Hole 16 was really neat shooting out over the lake to get to the basket. Hole 4 and hole 17 are the two holes over 1,000ft and they were fun to play just because of the magnitude of the length.

Cons:

Not much shade and a lot of wind. This course was tough to navigate. I did okay with the help of one of the locals that I talked to before teeing off on hole one. Hole 15 was not where the sign said it would be and 16 was in the middle of an area under construction.

Other Thoughts:

Unlike any other because of the distances on the holes. Not the most scenic, but definitely challenging disc golf.

Old Settlers 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 12, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I remember reading somewhere that this is one of Ken Climo's favorite courses due to it's difficulty.

What makes it so difficult is the ball golf distance par 4's and 5's.

The informative signs are nice.

The lake is pretty and becomes a pucker factor when you have to throw a deceptively long distance over a corner of it on hole #16.

There are some really fun holes with elevation drops.

This is a great place to learn to throw rollers due to the huge distances and big open grassy fields that always seem to be mowed pretty short.

It is also a great place to learn how to deal with high winds from every possible angle.

Cons:

The concrete tee pads are narrower than most making it awkward if you do an x-step.

I had trouble locating the pin on one of the >1000 ft holes (# 4). I sent my kid's out on an expedition and they found it past the new bridge close to the creek.

The walks between shade trees are very long which makes mid-day summer play difficult.

Hundreds of discs have been lost across the corner of the lake on #16.

Other Thoughts:

This course made me give up the sport about 10 years ago but now I realize that a course with this many long holes is extremely rare and though it may be very frustrating for beginners it has it's place and greatly compliments the other more technical Austin area courses.
