A Gem in Atlanta! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 30, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The layout - The course design is simply fantastic. It plays through a public park which incorporates a nice open area with nice green grass and tall hardwoods, along a nice old stone channeled creek (no real danger of losing a disc, but you might get wet), and through a heavily wooded hillside. The creek is the centerpiece, and hills rise on both sides. There are holes playing both across and along the creek, as well as up, down, and along the hillsides. There is a great mix of hole lengths as well. Hole 4 is 220 ft with a 20ft elevation drop easily reachable with a putter, and hole 18 is 850 ft uphill through the woods to a basket that is about 30ft higher in elevation than the tee pad.

The Baskets - I am not sure if these are custom built or production baskets, but they are much nicer than what I am used to. There were 3 rows of chains and the thickest basket metal that I have ever seen. They caught discs nicely, and barely made a sound.

Plenty of parking and public restrooms available.

Cons:

There were a few, but most of them are likely to be remedied in the near future. As mentioned by the course description, this course is a work in progress.

Tee pads - The tee pads are carpet, and while most appear to be in their permanent positions, some have flags in new locations.

Benches - There aren't any, and this course is a serious walk. They will be a welcome addition when they go in.

Signage - Since the course design has changed some in the last year, the current tee sings (laminated paper stapled to wooden stakes) are not accurate for several holes. The distances listed on the DGCR scorecard appear to be correct.

The hillside walking up to hole 1 (which is also used to access 3 other tee pads for different holes, looks like it will be prone to erosion issues. Hopefully the volunteers that are putting in this course have a plan for landscaping and shoring up this area. I would likely be slippery after rain, and could really use better stairs cut into the hillside.

Other Thoughts:

I read a lot of the reviews before playing this course, and was very excited to play the new layout. It did not disappoint, and was quite challenging from the first hole to the last.

Several previous reviewers mentioned the neighborhood as a con. While not one of Atlanta's richer areas, I would definitely not call this a 'bad neighborhood'. The park itself is beautiful and peaceful (which is amazing considering its proximity to Downtown Atlanta.

I will definitely play this course again on my next trip to the ATL. Hopefully I can make it to a tournament!

Pros:

Absolutely beautiful park! Some people mention that it is in a sketch neighborhood, but that is not at all the case...Yes, you are in south Atlanta, but the park is very serene and non-discgolfers are only present on the first couple of holes and have never been an issue in my experiences at this course. And as for the course itself, Perkerson has a little bit of everything; great uphill, downhill, left-turning, right-turning, straight, heavily-wooded, moderately-wooded, and lightly-wooded holes! It is a difficult course that will test your accuracy. Also, the creek that runs through the middle of the course adds some extra beauty to the course. If your in the area, Perkerson shouldn't be missed!

Cons:

This course is relatively new, and as such is still somewhat a work in progress. For the time being, the lack of good signage and the carpet teepads (often very short) are the two most noticeable cons. The good news is that there is a group of dedicated golfers that are putting in A LOT of time to making the necessary improvements. I hear that teepads and signage are in the near future for this course!

Other Thoughts:

For the time being, you should definitely print off a course map or try and play with a local if it is your first time here. Great course!

Cons:

#1 can be tricky to find for newcomers. the trails can be a little mushy after rains. carpeted tee box could be a little nicer

This course is very diverse and is a great course to challenge your skill set. Great park with lots of beauty! This course has lots of potential and they always seem to be finding ways to make it better.

Cons:

The signage at this course is not all that great. They are working on making this better for the people that have nevered played this course. If you are going to play in the near future and have never played this course, I highly recomend playing with someone that has.

Other Thoughts:

Wish there was Sunday or Saturday doubles at this course. Willing to start the trend if I can get some input on people wating the same.

Time for some praise. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

If I were to solely base this course on layout, which is my MAIN factor in reviews, this course would probably be a 4.5.

This course has such excellent land in such a random part of ATL(also the first permanent course in the perimeter) it's almost hard to believe when you step out of the car.

The park is absolutely beautiful, and has relatively nice facilities.

Literally every single shot shape is tested here, quite a bit of elevation with tight fairways, some longer open shots to air out, downhill and tight, uphill shots open that turn to tight and turning to the right. Just excellent variety and an EXCELLENT addition to the Atlanta area disc golf scene.

Cons:

Ugh. This course isn't as bad as people have said when it comes to the people who frequent the park. I never once felt not safe, but unfortunately, I suppose the surrounding area is unfortunate..I played it less than a week after everything was put in permanently, and chains were missing off of 3 baskets, including one that I literally hit the metal pole on and it just bounced off..no chains there to catch it.

Other Thoughts:

I truly hope that this course can remain intact. I know they have fought incredibly hard to get this course here after a lot of years of temporary play.

This is an excellent course, and I advise to play it while it is here, I'm not saying it's going to be gone at any point in the future, but if things like this keep up, I could see it happening.

Diamond in the rough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 16, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

First and foremost, this is a great city park to use for a DG course. Good elevation changes, nice creek that runs through most of the course, and once the wooded holes and trails become seasoned, they will also be fantastic. The permenate baskets are among the best I've seen. This is a players course, not really designed for beginners, and still needs a lot of work, but could be a 4.0 or 4.5 with proper tee pads and signs !!!

Cons:

The "carpet" tee pads are good enough to play a round, but this course deserves nice pads, ( 2 on each hole ). There is still a lot of work and clean up to do, mostly because of having to clear fairways in the woods, and also some storm damage. Signage is not in place yet, except for handwritten hole # and distance, and finding the correct basket, and finding the next tee was challenging at best !!! Perkerson is a urban metro park, and another player I spoke to while I was there, carried a stun gun with him, but I didn't get the feeling that was needed, even though I was by myself.

Other Thoughts:

A trick I saw on another course is to paint one of the rods on the basket, bright yellow pointing in the direction of the next tee, that way there's no sign to be stolen or broken !!! As of August 18, the trail to the #1 and #5 tee's has been cleared of storm damaged trees !!!

Pros:

It is a very balanced course. It requires multiple types of shots. Distance and accuracy are both required at spots.

There is significant elevation change that is incorporated very nicely into the course.

The rock walled creek and old fireplaces that line the center of the park are very nice.

Cons:

The wooded holes are still pretty rough at this point and contain a fair amount of trash.

It seems like a very busy park, being located in a very urban environment.

Other Thoughts:

Tee pads and signage were both acceptable.

Challenge, variety, and aesthetics were all above average although nothing really wowed me.

Very pretty course, with the best baskets I have ever seen. Good mix of backhand and forehand drives. Nice downhill shots for long distance.

Cons:

Not sure if it was due to a recent storm, but the paths are horrible with trees and debris blocking the way to the first hole. Way too much underbrush on some holes, which means a lot of time spent looking for discs. On one hole even though I drove my disc about 20 feet from the pin with an awesome drive, I spent about thirty minutes looking for it. The tee pads are also tiny, which didn't matter to me because I don't use a run-up anyways.

Great Piece of Land 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The park that this course is located in is absolutely awesome. Baskets were heavy duty quality! Locals were putting more signage out while we played, so that will help with directional flow! The use of elevation makes for some really cool shots, especially for putters and mids. There is 2-3 "signature" holes in my opinion, but hole 18 could be a beast, long, narrow, uphill ending could make a good round turn bad! I can't say enough about the landscape and endless opportunities for different layouts! It was beautiful!

Cons:

Most of the negatives will be addressed as the course is played more, such as the new signage that was being put up that morning. The transition/walks between a couple of holes holes didn't make sense, especially with land between to lengthen holes or put new ones in altogether. If it wasn't for a local in the parking lot, I doubt we could have found hole 1 tee. Tee boxes are carpet, some uneven, again something that will probablybe addressed with the course now being permanent.

Other Thoughts:

This course is fun to play, not too technical or long and only calls for distance on 4 or 5 holes...... Some of the "longer" holes play down hill, so a mid or fairway driver will easily reach them. Holes 11 and 18 are great golf holes! The stone sided creek/brooke is amazing scenery!

Get Ready for a Hike. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 14, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I think its awesome that Atlanta finally has a DG course. The layout of most holes are really cool. They use the elevation changes up and down on a lot of the holes to add to the difficulty. Hole #1 is really cool. You tee off of a small cliff over the creek then back up a hill to the basket. There is a large creek that runs through the middle of the course. It adds to the scenery and provides a challenge for the many holes that run alongside it. There are some really tight wooded holes as well as some open holes to air it out on. Most of the tee pads are carpeted and leveled out nicely. You can tell there has been a lot of work done even though there is still much work needed. Everyone we talked to was very friendly and seemed to enjoy the park. All 18 holes were nicely designed and required a variety of shots. Temporary signs were enough for us to navigate the course without a map. When this place is done it will be awesome.

Cons:

Most of the Cons on this course have to do with the fact that its new and still a work in progress. This place is definitely rough around the edges. Some of the holes still need clearing and the trails from hole to hole definitely need some work. The course seemed very long. A lot of the time you have to walk way out of the way to get to your disc from the tee pads. I think this problem will be fixed as more work is done on the course. There are only temp signage but we were able to figure it out. The wooded holes are filled with trash and broken glass but the open areas of the park are relatively clean. Be sure to bring bug spray. I got ate up by mosquitoes. One of the biggest problems I had was that several chains were missing from the baskets.

Other Thoughts:

This place has major potential. Cant wait to play it when its done. Until then I will continue to enjoy it for what it is now. I recommend this place to everybody and all kinds of players. I going to try and make it to one of there course work days and encourage you to do the same.

Needs to be Permanent 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Perkerson park is a beautiful course in the middle of metro Atlanta. The park itself seems like it was made for disc golf. There are some beautiful mature oak trees, rolling hills and a beautiful stone-walled creek that runs through the whole park. The course itself plays par 61, with five par 4s and a par 5. Both distance and accuracy are a must have for a good score. The creek plays as O.B. and runs parallel to the fairway for eight holes, sometimes obviously and sometimes just lurking off to a side and waiting for you to let your guard down. It takes concentration and execution to stay in bounds for the whole round, and limiting those penalty strokes is absolutely essential to carding a good score.

Every single hole offers multiple flight paths, though not all paths are equal, creating some great risk/reward situations. In some cases this is compounded by the O.B., producing some situations that can really test your nerves

Cons:

The course is temporary, and carries with it everything that temporary nature implies. Natural tees, no signage, and portable baskets. This is obviously a drawback, especially the natural pads in a couple places (Looking at you, holes 7 & 8) if it has rained recently.

Other Thoughts:

The course isn't in the best part of town, but I personally have never had any issues. In my opinion, this will be the best course in metro Atlanta when it becomes permanent. But until then, you should definitely check and see if the course will be set up if you're in the area. If so, head out and play. You won't be disappointed.

Pros:

Just an absolutely beautiful course, many signature holes. A true challenge as well, very tight but realistic fairways and more risk/reward than a Russian roulette game. A great variety of up and downhill holes with just enough foliage and water hazards to make things very interesting.

Cons:

Temporary...with that comes a variety of baskets. I found it very hard to putt well with the big variety of basket types. Non permanent tees were and could be very slippery when the ground is moist. No restrooms, this doesn't really bother me but my wife didn't dig it too much. Some possible car or pedestrian hazards though none presented themselves.

Other Thoughts:

A beautiful park with rolling hills, mature trees and a creek running through it. The tight fairways with multiple OB opportunities will challenge your accuracy to the limits. While a lot of the shots are tight they never felt forced or ridiculous. I really hope this becomes a permanent course because it is truly one of the best in GA.

Future Gem of a course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a beautiful, well maintained, and challenging course in a city park setting, featuring gentle rolling hills, lots of mature trees, thick foliage in some areas, and a large creek running through most of the course. The course is well designed around these elements to provide a challenging, legit par 63 layout.

There is a great variety of shots required to play this course. The course as I played it is set up for blue/advanced level players, requiring reasonable distance and accuracy to score well. True par 4s reward well placed drives and force accurate up shots in order to get the birdie. The course seems meant more for experienced players and newer players may have a tough time with this course, but a wide range of skill levels can play this course and enjoy themselves, especially if they enjoy being challenged!

Cons:

The most obvious con is that it is not a permanent course. The other cons surround that fact, such as there are no tee pads, no tee signs, and the course only uses temp baskets whenever it is set up. These cons should go away whenever the course becomes permanent. The course did seem to be in a shady area of Atlanta, but I did not have any problems while playing there for league.

Other Thoughts:

I had heard good things about this course prior to my trip and I was not let down. I was told of some changes that would need to be made for this course to become permanent, but all in all, I look forward to the day that I can make a trip and play a permanent course with good tee signs, tee pads, and baskets. I will also increase my course rating when this day comes. If you get a chance to play this course as it is in the meantime, then I would highly recommend doing so.

A must stop 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun course, laid out well along the creek with elevation changes and trees throughout. Many different types of shots are required and risk/reward decisions are important on may holes as there are plenty of chances to throw OB. Locals are extremely friendly and accomodating to vistors and out of towners.

Cons:

I would probably rate the course a 4.5 if it were permanent. With teepads, signs and permanent catchers this would be a fantastic course. It was a bit "swampy" when I was there, but I assume it was just a rainy week.

Other Thoughts:

None of the courses in the area are easy to get to with public transit. (Marta is fairly useless) If you are lucky you can get someone from the local club to help. This course is the most accessible to visitors (without a car) in the area. If you are there on a Wed. night this is a must.

perkerson park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 25, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Centrally located in Atlanta, not crowded with other activities, well maintained and groomed park.

Cons:

Neighborhood might be a little rough. Some trash in the creek. Temporary course

Other Thoughts:

This course plays along a creek that serves as an OB hazard, with elevation changes, mature foliage on the sides of the fairways and mature trees widely spaced in the fairways. A well designed course that takes advantage of the creek and natural obstacles to provide a very challenging experience for all levels of disc golfers. Advanced and pro players will find this course more to their liking, as it takes a fairly big arm and a higher level of accuracy to play this course under par. Its such a nice area though, all ability levels will like this park, and course.
The majority of the holes here are 350 to 500 feet in length, with a couple of shorter holes in the 200 to 300 foot length, and more than a few +500 foot holes as well. Most holes have moderate elevation changes to them, a couple of blind tee shots because of this. A good mix of uphill and downhill shots. You can get away with rollers on a lot of tee shots here as there is mostly mowed grass on the fairways, but tight OB on the sides of the fairways, and mature tree hazards in the fairways may keep you from that shot. Terrain usage and basket placement is at a premium here, every hole shows signs of well thought out dimensioning, from the tee, fairway, and corridor line-up to your final destination, the basket.
The advantages to this course is the longer-than-average hole length which utilizes the terrain in every aspect. The forgiveness factor on average is also fair, not to say you wont get in trouble if you shank or pull a shot. Preferred flight paths are well established, and if you follow them, you will enjoy this course much more than if you didn't. Which can be said for any course, but this course has so many trees in the park to account for down the fairways, you don't want to end up behind one on your second, or third shot, etc...
Its hard to describe the great potential this course has, to be a standard for other disc golf courses in regards to design, and terrain usage, but if it becomes permanent then it should be a must-play for you, so you can see for yourself.
And that's the problem with the park, its not permanent. Tee pads are dirt, and the baskets are only there when the local players set them up for monthlies, no tee signs. Contact the local players to see if and when the course is set up. For now, it's the only time you will be able to experience Perkerson Park for what it could be on a permanent basis. My rating for this course would be higher than a 4, but as of right now it's a temporary course, with no tee pads or tee signs, or even baskets most of the time which I hope gets rectified someday soon.

Perkerson Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 8, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Perkerson Park is a beautiful city park nestled in the Sylvan Hills/Capitol View neighborhood in downtown Atlanta. Among other things, the park offers a playground, ball fields and pavilions but most importantly, it is home to what many regard as one of the best disc golf courses in Atlanta.

The park itself seems like a place that just radiates disc golf. You cannot deny that you have driven by some random piece of property and said to yourself, "There's a disc golf hole!" Well, this whole park is full of areas like that. Mature trees pepper the property as rolling hills define the landscape. Deeper in the course you will play through a more wooded area/hardwood forest. Nearly century old stacked stone walls line a creek that meanders through the park and shows itself several times as you play through. There are old stone fireplaces throughout the course that just add to its character. The course has a one of a kind atmosphere and it will certainly be memorable.

After several years of folks only being able to enjoy playing it as a temporary course, it is finally a permanent fixture. As any of the locals will tell you, it was well worth the wait. Many folks will miss some of the holes in the old temporary layout that were not included in the final design. However not many will complain about what the new design has to offer. After all, the new design incorporates something that the old design was missing, wooded holes.

From hole one's memorable tee shot shooting off a cliff all the way through hole eighteen's challenging par 5, you see a little bit of everything. Complementing the round finishing par 5 is a trio of par 4's on holes nine, twelve, and fifteen. Overall, depending on which pads you choose and the current pin placements, you will be playing somewhere between 5284' and 6867' on this par 59 layout.

You will discover that just about every design element is here! You will see plenty of elevation changes with both up and down shots scattered throughout the design. In addition, they are not just straight up and down either, most of them sweep left and right as well. Hole nine's par 4 is especially nice as it plays up and over a hill, across a shallow valley, then finishes slightly uphill again. You will find a great balance of open to tightly wooded shots as well. While the open holes allow for the big arms to "air it out", they cannot just indiscriminately throw without concern. The designs on the open holes ask for good placement for follow up shots and there are some obstacles to navigate. Once you get into the woods, you will have to be much more precise. Not many folks will accuse these holes of being unfair, but you will have to play smart. Overall, you will find that many of the park's features come into play including the creek. Almost half of the holes have a risk of OB water with some more dangerous than others. Eleven and eighteen are probably the most common OB water shots as the holes play alongside the creek. You will find unique holes throughout with greens situated on an island peninsula, a rocky hillside and even a terraced elevated basket. Overall this a well thought out and well-designed course.

As far as amenities go, this course has a lot to offer. Beginning with tee pads, they are a really nice and unique rubber surface. From what I understand, the pads poured in place from a batter of ground tires and EPMD rubber. It created a synthetic surface similar to what you may have seen on playgrounds or walking trails. They work great and appear to be holding up pretty well. All but one hole has duel locations with the shorter of the two geared to the recreational level player. 6x6 timbers border the pads and they look great. On a few, they are elevated with some nice hand laid stacked stone retaining walls. In both cases, they are unique and everyone seems to love them. The baskets are the very rugged and heavy duty Gateway Titans and they are top notch. Interestingly, they are much quieter than any basket I have ever played before. There are multiple pin locations with the majority holes boasting three placements. The tee signs are custom-made galvanized steel stands with Houck Design "Premium" signs. As a bonus, there is a second sign on the short pad as well the long pad. Volunteer installed stone steps (repurposed from an old structure in the park) on a few holes are also a welcome addition. Three bridges existed prior to the course. As luck would have it, they are in the perfect locations and work great for the course's layout. There is a nice pavilion between the parking lot and hole one that is great for tourney central or just a place to have lunch. There is also a covered area with several charcoal grills if cooking out is of interest.

Cons:

As far as course design or playability is concerned, I really do not have a whole lot of complaints. There is a time or two where weird transitions from hole to hole can trip you up. The transition from eleven to twelve and from fourteen to fifteen comes to mind. Some good next tee signs would be helpful in this area. Printing a course map your first visit will save you some time looking around.

No bathroom (or at least it is usually closed) and no drinking water at the course. There are no trashcans on the course and some say that is a con. Pack it in/pack it out. (There are trashcans at the pavilion)

Not unlike a handful of other Atlanta courses, most of the maintenance is by volunteer labor. The city takes care of the grass in the open areas but during the summer, some of the wooded areas can be overgrown. (Note that a volunteer/adopt-a-hole program has recently been implemented. I am hopeful the majority of this will not be an issue in the future).

The course, although in a neighborhood undergoing revitalization, is in an economically and culturally diverse area. It may not hurt to be cautious and observant during solo rounds, and maybe even while playing in small groups. The bigger issue is car break-ins. While comparatively rare given the number of visitors to the course, I certainly would recommend you leave valuables at home and not in the car.

Other Thoughts:

It has been fun watching and playing this course as it has transformed into what it is today. I remember when it was a temporary course set up for a weekly league and occasional tourneys. The tee pads were flag marked grass areas and the majority of the baskets were fabric. To see where it is today is just special.

To John Ritger and the others who made this course possible, thank you! Moreover, thanks to the countless others who put in the incalculable hours to make the course what it is today. This course is one of the reasons Atlanta disc golf is great. I cannot wait to see it improve even more in the years to come.

Pros:

Long AND somewhat tight, many many bomber shots that do also require accuracy. Must be able to throw far but not just wildly. Major hills make for a workout and add to the difficulty of most drives and putts. Clean, well maintained park- baskets just tossed in and you're ready to play. Someday will be permanent and with shorter tees for fairness' sake. Rock wall lined creek often in play. Scenic.

Cons:

Not the best neighborhood but not horrible or scary. Only temporary once a month, I got lucky on my timing.

Other Thoughts:

Review star count based on temp status, dirt tees and no signs. Add cement, signs, boost it a star to 4.5 someday, as it goes permanent.
