Old School

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 14, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee signs
Cement tee pads
multiple pin positions
Couple of hoes have 2 tee's
Mostly a well upkept park with plenty of large trees on most of the course.

Cons:

It is very hard to figure out where you are throwing from several of the tee's. Nothing marking which pin position the basket is in. Specially on the holes that share pin position.
Very long walk between a couple of the holes.

Other Thoughts:

Old course that has seen better days in my opinion. It's fun to play, lots of interesting shots. Plenty of challenging holes.

but the fact it was hard to figure out which pin I was throwing towards most of the time really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Then you have the long walks to the back side of the course and back. I hate long walks.

I did enjoy the island green on hole 2. It is surrounded by a road which is not good and poor course design.

This is the area that is confusing. Holes 18, 2 and 4 all share some same pin positions. The baskets are numbered, but when playing for the first time, from the tee, it was hard to figure out.

On the back side you have one of the harder holes in the KC area, hole 13 was 600+ft where your drive placement is very important to even attempt a 3. Get off the main fairway and you are screwed.

Hole 15 is the only water shot. There are 2 tee's and several pin positions. But the fun shot was not set up when I played it.

Would I play here again? Actually, no, there are better courses in KC, this is a fun course to play, it can be changed up if you play here a lot. But for someone out of town, this is a one and done course for me.

The OG DG in KC 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Prairie Center is one of the oldest courses in Kansas City, home of the first Kansas City Wide Open, and has happily stood the test of time by remaining a quality course despite so much else changing. The tee pads, baskets, parking, and signs are all in at least decent shape, and there's potential for a fun round for nearly all players. Maintenance is pristine. There's also bathrooms and plenty of parking.

The best part of this course is the variance: no two holes are the same. Some of the unique ones are throwing over or through a line of trees on 10, the water on 15, over the tree farm on 9, and more. The island shot on 2 or 4 (usually 2) is also fantastic; it's difficult to go for it off the tee, but it's fun landing near the road and putting over OB to a basket that really isn't far away. I also enjoy the tunnel shots on 3 and 6.

The newer holes, 11-14, are absolutely fantastic. Other than 11 being between two sports fields, it's a really difficult hole that takes some playing to get used to. Holes 12 and 13 (in longer pins) are epic par 4's that involve weaving through lots of trees, and placement of your first shot is crucial. They're all possible to birdie, but very difficult. After those, it's hole 14, which is still in the woods but has room to air it out.
The rest of the course plays like a casual park-style course, except there is some challenge at every turn, whether it be a tree to hit early (6-10, 18), some wind (17 is windy for some reason), or an OB path or road (2, 3, 16, 17).

Even if some holes are a bit tweener, there's still incentive to throw your drive as far as possible, but there will almost always be trees ready to knock you down. There's are individual trees in the middle of the fairways of 6 and 11, that really should be easy to avoid, but certainly gets in your head and have probably caused many shots to go awry. On holes like 7 and 18, most players will have no hope of a birdie, but the farther the drive goes, the easier the upshot will be. In addition, a long tee shot that ends up left or right is still okay. This isn't always good (and certainly isn't the case on 13 and 14), but for a few holes it's good.

Cons:

Not much elevation change. There's enough for some decent variety on several holes, but it isn't enough to give the course enough variety to complement the variety in wooded-ness and shot shapes. Most holes have a little elevation change, but there are no steep slopes to be seen. It makes certain sets of holes quite similar - not the same, but rather similar.

Several holes don't feel very normal. There's not really a good line on 6, 7, or 18, and as like many traditional holes, everything is just blindly labeled as par 3, despite several being rather tweener holes. I also don't like hole 15, the water shot, mostly because the bailout option to the right leaves you in a pretty terrible spot to try to get a par. A few holes have lines over the top of all the trees, on some of the holes that have a slightly elevated tee pad.

There are several holes with two tee pads, but they don't add much to the course. I usually play the longs, but I'm pretty sure the short tee is intended to be used on 8, and the tee pad you use on 15 is dictated by which pin is in use. On the others, holes 2, 6, and 18, both tee pads are close enough together that they don't change the hole much.

The park is often quite busy. There aren't usually non-discers on the fairways, but the sports fields nearby can be issues. Holes 11 and 17 play beside a baseball field, and 11 and 14 are also near a soccer field. In addition to a lot of noise, you'd better be confident you won't be disturbing some soccer moms on the edge of the field.

Other Thoughts:

I wish this course could utilize some more of the woods around hole 13. It would add a few more wooded holes, and they wouldn't have to be long. It would also allow some of the holes in the 5-8 area to be a bit more spread out. Other than that, this course really doesn't have any true weak points that would be easy to fix. It's possible that the tee pads or signs will soon become worn out and be in need of replacement, but they're in good shape right now. There are also a couple of holes that would lose their charm if one tree fell down.

There's some housing being build behind the baskets of 11 and adjacent to the fairway of 12. It shouldn't disturb the course at all, but all it would take is one or two backyards to become a little bigger than they ought and those holes would be toast.

Overall, this is a pretty fun course that has quite a bit to be excited about, but it's issues still prevent it from getting a higher rating from me, and it has been upstaged by lots of other courses in the area. But if you want to see where a big part of Disc Golf in Kansas City started, then this is the place to go. Nearly all skill levels can have fun here (though some may need to skip 15) and experience the history of this park and how it has remained a quality course.

Fun Play in Olathe Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

~Concrete Tee Pads
~Diverse drive selection
~Clean park, with benches and trash cans
~Multiple pin/pads
~Decent signage

Cons:

~Poor layout, where to go after certain holes can be difficult.. IE: After hole 8 one of the only teepad in sight is 18...

Other Thoughts:

~This is just my personal opinion but courses that have very multiple basket locations if they are difficult to see from the teepad there should be a way to mark on the sign the current location. (I understand this is a common theme for courses)
~The course is very well kept, is nestled in a family friendly park. Great for all ages and skill levels will have fun at this course.
~If you are local in the area or visiting people in the area it is worth a visit. Not the first one I would go to play but it is a fun round every time.

Journey to the Center of the Prairie 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Prairie Center Park works in 18 holes on the disc golf course. There are concrete tees, with signs. Innova Discatchers were pretty good, and multiple pins on each hole. Benches are here and there around the park if you need a place to sit for a moment.

The trees are numerous and make for good variation from hole to hole. Nominal elevation changes in places, and there is a bit of water around 14 and 15.

On the front 9 there are some birdie chances, and on the back things are taken up a notch. I liked the island hole, but being in the center of a turnaround at the end of the parking lot isn't ideal. Two par fours on 12 and 13 pump up the distance. Hole 15 takes a good drive to carry across the pond and be in position for a putt or approach.

Cons:

The layout is pretty choppy, and there are lengthy walks after some holes. I would have liked a more guidance to find the next tee on the holes that are followed by long transitions.

Many other park facilities and roads are nearby on several holes, so cars or pedestrians can be in range.

Other Thoughts:

While the quality of the course is very good, it can be tough to navigate for a first time visitor. The available space is used well, but on a busy day it may take a while to complete a round as try to avoid throwing too near to other people in the park.

I played this one late in the day and had to hurry to beat nightfall. I lost a disc on hole 14, it went left into the trees, maybe as far down as the creek. Champion Orc, pink, may still be hanging around.

A 58 was not a bad score for the first time playing at Prairie Center Park, but I would have liked to do better. If I return it will be earlier in the day, and probably not during the weekend, to ensure that I am not rushed and can see where I am trying to put the discs more clearly.

fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

well maintained
nice tee pads
nice baskets
nice signage and map
well defined lines
variety of shots
clean well maintained park

Cons:

the course got somewhat confusing for a newbie.
hole #11 is behind the baseball diamonds. some signage pointing the way would have been VERY helpful
basket for hole #9 was hard to find

Other Thoughts:

As a newer player I like playing on this course. Hole 2 or 4 has the basket on the island in the cul de sac which is neat and a challenge.
I usually play holes 11-16 to start. I park by the baseball diamonds, throw those 6 holes then park near hole #1 and finish my round. I am too old to be hiking that far between holes.
As a new player I found most of the holes a challenge but with proper technique and some luck par is definitely possible. Overall I found the course fun and challenging, I seem to love throwing discs into trees !!
Definitely recommend this course if you haven't tried it.

The best course in Olathe 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A whole variety of holes. From shorter birdie opportunities, to ridiculously long par 4's through the forest. There is a hole where water comes into play, a hole where you have to shoot onto an island surrounded by cement, and one where you shoot through a field of young trees. A variety of shots is needed, and coming out of the back nine even is a challange.
Well maintained course, has very good signage, including pin placement, distance, and hole number. There are also other amenities, such as good teepads (multiple teepads on 5 holes) benches on most holes, bathrooms on sight, practice basket, trashcans, and picnic shelters.

Cons:

A few holes come into contact with the soccer fields, and on a Sunday there are quite a few spectators, to the point where if you want to play 11 and 12 you'll have to ignore the teebox and just kind of drop in the fairway to avoid hitting anybody.

Other Thoughts:

I would reccomend bringing some old beat up plastic if you are going to try throwing over the water.
There are people who enjoy the herb while playing, but I've seen cops driving through every once in a while, which seems to curb that.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Lots of mature trees
-Good signage

Cons:

-Multipurpose park
-Front 9 is just the same throw over and over again; straight and through or around trees.
-15 is just sort of a joke. Even people with 350+ range and control are going to go into the water due to the sheer smallness of the target and the other option is take 4+ strokes to go around. I view this as a con, not a fun challenge
-Baskets are old and rusted
-Fairways too tight on front 9

Other Thoughts:

Front 9 is like playing in an apple orchard. Also lots of opportunities to lose discs on back 9 which can be a pain in the ass. Walks are long and confusing at times but anyone with intuition or a camera phone can figure it out easily.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The cement teepads are nice and on some holes there are alternate tees. There are tee signs at every hole with an overhead view and distances for the baskets, and alternates w/ par. The fairways seem to always be well kept and free of debris, but there is still enough hazard to keep you thinking about a good line. It is in a nice part of town, with plenty nearby if you need snacks/ drinks/ gas...anything. Benches and trashcans are plentiful here so no need to carry a grocery sack full of everyones elses trash you pick up. I do play kind of off hours, but it has never been overwhelmingly crowded like some of the other nearby courses can get.
There is a nice mix of holes with alternate placements here ranging from short tunnel, a couple short technical shots, to long open bombs, sometimes an island shot on a cul de sac, a shot over the water on 15, with the water behind the basket on 14, shots into or out of the trees, some slight elevation, plenty of obstacles but no "unfairways".
Some ace opportunity here, and some nice challenging birdies, but there are definitely a couple to keep your score in check.

Cons:

A section of the course (from 11 and back from 16) is a long walk from the rest of the course, but worthwhile nonetheless. Take a map with you or you may get lost after 11 or 16. The evergreens will swallow your discs, so watch what they hit.
There are a couple holes with nearby soccer and baseball fields so during games, you may have some excessive traffic but people are usually understanding when you let them know they are in a fairway (nicely).

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoy this course. My parents live nearby and I play it almost every time I go home. There are a lot of very good courses around this area, so this is an easy one to overlook when coming through town. If you can find the time for a round here, it will not dissapoint you.

Pros:

Very well kept.
- Pins are changed at regular intervals.
- Island pin on #2/#4 makes for an interesting upshot.
- Not overly busy.
- Good for all levels - beginners can learn to use different techniques, intermediates can make par, and pros can try multiple birdie/ace attempts.
- Benches/trash cans on almost every tee.

Cons:

- Trees on #7 (disc-eating pines), #9, #18 can be aggrivating.
- Soccer games/spectators can be a nuisance on the weekend.
- Not much elevation change (fairly flat except #15/#16).
-It's a long walk between #11 and #12.

Other Thoughts:

I live only a few miles from this course so I play it almost every week. It was the course I learned on and the first place I made a birdie. The difficulty is good for beginners, but not overly tough. Intermediate and pros will enjoy multiple birdie and a few ace opportunities.

Good for beginners and advanced players 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 8, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pros for beginners: The course has an overall short average distance. The course does not require specialty shots. Besides from 16-17, the course lays beautifully.
Pros for advanced players: A lot of birdieable holes, though you still have to be able to hold a steady line through and over trees to get that birdie. Its a quick play.
The lake provides a nice watar hazard.

Cons:

If you do not have the best accuracy, this course will expose that. There are some shots you have to go through a tunnel of trees, but if you have the accuracy, you will be fine.
Going from the 16th basket to the 17th tee is a very long walk, and if you are there by yourself for the first time, it is hard to find.

Other Thoughts:

This course is built for people with good accuracy and not so much distance players. Though distance is a key on a couple of holes, if you are accurate all day, you will be looking at a good score.

17 good one and a odd finish 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 17, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good variety of hole lengths. Multiple pins and occasional multiple tee pads add to the interest. Unique island green (#2).

Cons:

To many holes feel like other holes on the same course. 18 may be the worst finishing hole in KC, could flip it with #7 or take one of the pines that sits about 100' off the tee out. Wouldn't be bad in the middle of the round but not worthy of a closing hole.

Other Thoughts:

Grass way to tall today. Must have been a long time since it had been cut. Also, loads of tree's/tree limbs down. 12 has a big one blocking 80% of the fairway. 15 tee is covered. 7/31 update: trees cleared, grass cut. Solid again. Raised rating and very thankful for the quick response of grounds crew to the tree issue.

This course is a great course. Well maintained, Located in a city park inside a neighborhood. Easy to find this course. Off of k-7 and 135th st (sante fe). Each hole has multiple pin placements, changed almost weekly, and nice cement launching pads. Some holes have ace oppurtunity. Hole 2 has an island in play during some placements. Hole 3 is a tunnel shot. Hole 15 has a lake to cross. One placement for the pin is on waters edge. But over all one of the best in kanas city, Lots of air outs but still need to have the technical skills. Signs updated for the worlds in '09

Cons:

Have to walk a bit from hole 11-12. and holes 16-17. In the summer lots of trees can be in play alot. Some times the pin on hole twelve is inside a group of trees. In the fall there is alot leaves on the ground. can be a bit crowded, but if no one played it wouldnt be here.

Other Thoughts:

A must course to add to the resume, Also watch out for a crazy icecream driver. (he might accuse you of taking his money), Long story

Beautiful 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 6, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Absolutely beautiful course that is very well maintained by Olathe Parks & Rec.
The mature trees that line each hole have a mixed variety of deciduous and coniferous and really challenge your accuracy.

Course has a practice putting area just North of the restrooms.

Pins are rotated frequently which is a big bonus compared to other local area courses which may not rotate much or at all. It gives the course a nice change for the frequent player.

Hole 12 basket is located in a very protected tree grove on all basket locations except 1. I have found it impossible to get within 50' of the basket yet. I would recommend staying tight to the tree-line on the right hand side and approach the basket from the right side. The left side has a 5' wide by 30 trail to sneak through.

Great water hole @ 15. I'm guessing approximately 150 feet to clear the water and about 225 feet to the fairway. only hole where the water really comes into play.

Has a nice putting area next to restrooms.

Cons:

Some odd pin placement behind trees which quite frankly in many cases just added one stroke to my score each time because I personally did not have an undestable disc this time around.

Course can be somewhat difficult to follow for first time players since no map is yet available. Each tee is marked with a black steel sign and takes just a little while to find on some holes.

Hole 16 to 17 requires a walk back across the soccer field and parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Nice concrete tees.
Has restroom at parking lot.
Moderately busy course.
Needs course map box at start.
