Will be a nice skills course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 14, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is wooded but not overtly technical except for a few holes. The course requires precision and an errant shot can bring danger. The pond comes into play on a few holes. Long throwers can bring a smaller bag and throw mid ranges and putters honing their accuracy. I still used my drivers but not on every hole. . I asked an elderly lady taking a stroll through the park where the disc golf course was and she escorted me to the first tee. The park is pretty and it was an enjoyable round. The parking lot had enough space. As you face the park walk left about 50 yards to the first tee.

Cons:

A few too many holes were more or less straight with a window or obstacle and not too many required either a lefty or righty to bend a shot. This is a shorter course that does not have any holes over 400 ft That is not certain as there are no posted hole lengths. I have little distance in my game so this course was a nice fit for me. This is a newer course that has hole numbers on each pad and basket but no directions to find the next tee. Most are not difficult to find but it took a while to find 10 and 11. I played them out of sequence after 12. A few markings will make this a pleasant course.

Very nice course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 8, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

A solid course! Parking is easy in Bower park. They have worked on the course since the last review was posted. Good news: There are now 18 marked tee boxes (several are concrete) and 18 marked baskets. NOTE - The next tee box is never very far from the previous basket. It is short, technical, and fun. Lots of midrange holes. A cool pond. Lots of redwood trees. Hats off to the locals.

Cons:

It is rustic for sure. It could use a few signs. But in general the next tee box is nearby. Just look around.

Other Thoughts:

Gualala is a beautiful town, and also a good hour or more from any disc golf, so that makes this course special. I'm visiting from Texas, so the weather is fantastic in August, and the course is fun. Thanks!

Quaint Course on the California Coast 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 28, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Gualala is a small town nestled on the northern California coast just north of Sea Ranch and south of Point Arena. It is filled with B&Bs, inns, restaurants, and gift shops and not much else. Originally a logging town it is now a coastal getaway and tourist trap. In this quasi-paradise the locals have installed a disc golf course at the Redwood Coast Recreation Center. Laid out as a 13 hole course but the locals replay holes 6-10 to make it an 18. It is a very small but beautiful piece of property about a mile up on a ridge above the coastline. There is elevation used to some effect on some of the holes, but it is slight. There is a small pond in the middle of the course but that only comes into play on hole 10, possibly on hole 5 and 12 if you were to overshoot. The course is fairly tight and technical in heavy woods with only a few holes playing out in the open clearing, but even then hole 1 has a double mando, and hole 5 and 13 play over ob. The holes are very short in length, with I don't believe any hole over 250 feet.

Cons:

Odd layout. A number of hole feel misplaced somehow. After throwing hole 1 you walk past 2s basket down its entire fairway to the tee just to throw back up the path you just walked down. You then walk right past hole 4s tee over to hole 3s tee. Crossing Fairways, but not just crossing fairways, fairways doubling over fairways. Hole 4s tee is almost directly in front of hole 2s tee. There is obviously no way multiple groups could be playing without communicating with each other. There are only 9 baskets used for the 13 holes and to make it 18 you have to rethrow a number of holes. The holes are really short even the fairly wide open holes, you are not going to be ripping it here.

Other Thoughts:

This course was difficult to rate. This is obviously a locals course, that just happens to be in a destination area. Despite many geographical similarities, no one is going to mistake this course for DeLa. It is not a destination course by any means, but it is a fun throw if you are in the area. Despite many cons I did enjoy my time here. Each of the holes individually were fun, even if the layout as a whole was a little odd. Obviously with the multiple crossing throw lines, and the fact that baskets are used for more than one hole, you are not going to be able to have a lot of groups playing here at any the same time. But as remote and laid back as this area is, I wouldn't expect it to be that big a problem.
On a final note, this course was extremely difficult to find. The previous visitor from DGCR left a note in course conditions that he couldn't find the course at all. I've learned from experience to do a little scouting before making a trip to a course and talked to some locals on the facebook page before coming. Even with their help it was a little difficult to find. I've updated the directions to reflect my notes on finding the course. The address listed is for Bower Park on Old Stage Rd. but the course is on the property of the Redwood Coast Recreation Center, which is an adjoining property to the south with an entrance on Ocean Ridge Dr. The gate for the RCRC on Ocean Ridge is closed however due to thieves apparently stealing water from the pond in the center of the course. So the only way to access the course most times is to walk through Bower Park. You walk south down dirt trails from the parking lot for about 1000 feet until you come to a clearing, and hole 1 is just east of the stage there. There are a number of dirt trails but as long as you go south they all seemed to come out in the clearing. If you don't know which way south is when you pull into Bower its to your left. There is a stage and a pond in Bower park as well so it gets confusing, but the course is not in Bower Park, so ignore Bower Park and walk south, through the trees, you will find the course.
