B+ = You Be Feelin' Positive After Playing This 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward -- B+
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities -- B
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography -- A-
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion -- B
5) Multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them -- NA

Other Thoughts:

I ranked this course subjectively based on my own personal enjoyment factor...more accurately my "personal addiction factor". Since I have played a decent number of courses (115 18-hole, 50 9-hole as of early 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they chose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I say adds anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good overall mix of open and wooded holes. Pin placements move around regularly which makes for an additional challenge if you don't play it every week. Well thought out design overall.

Cons:

There are some fairly tight fairways in the woods that would tend to discourage newbies. Lots of recent discussion about car break-ins and holdups(!) on the course is very discouraging.

Other Thoughts:

Love the course overall and up until recently I would have considered it the best overall course in the Atlanta area. There's nothing about the course itself that is a negative, but the recent security concerns definitely bump it down IMO. Without those, it's a 4 star course.

Good course, Bad location 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2006 Played the course:once

Pros:

I really enjoyed playing this course. I thought it was set up well. Once your start playing your forget where this course is located, it is a secluded DG feel. There were a couple of places where the next tee direction wasn't obvious, but we were able to figure it out.

Cons:

It was busy when I was there with DGers coming and going, so we did not have any problems with break-ins, but seeing the area on the way in, those type of problems don't surprise me.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this course, but unfortunately I would be afraid to leave my car parked there in order to play it.

Robbery Warning 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 5, 2009 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

WARNING: I was playing with a buddy today and we were held at gunpoint at hole #15. The suspect took our drivers licenses money and cellphones. Just be careful on the course especially if you are playing alone. The Dekalb County Police said that if you notice anybody just hanging around not playing disc golf, that possibly look suspicious to go ahead and notify the police.

Other than that, I really enjoyed the course, unfortunately I do not think I will be returning.

Fun to Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2000 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great signage, easy to follow, well kept by the locals (when I played there). Good variety of technical shots with emphasis on control. Very friendly locals, an excellent course for learning the game.

Cons:

There were some problems with break-ins in the parking lot when I played.

Other Thoughts:

My first round there was a few weeks after one of the top players in the region had decided to cut down some tree limbs without permission. The locals showed me the damage, which was disgraceful.

Nice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 20, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Senic coursein the woods mostly, well thought out holes. Course is marked pretty well, we did have to look around a couple of times for the next tee. This did not cause a long delay. Nice signs marking the multiple basket locations. Most holes had two or three posssible locations. If the baskets get moved regularly this will keep the course fresh. Course was pretty well maintained and the players we encountered were very friendly.

Cons:

Unfortunately this park is surrounded by some rather rough neighborhoods. You kind of wonder what you are getting into as you pass the junk yards.
Another course with the older baskets that are difficult to see, requireing some extra walking or throwing blind. This seems to be common to most of the courses I have played but I sure do like those nice yellow Innova baskets. The course was a little wet the day we played and the tee pads were surprisingly slippery. I little caution resolved this. Unfortunately there has been some vandalism on some of the tee box signs.

Other Thoughts:

If your a lefty this course will be to your likeing as many of the holes are layed out left to right. Caused many long walks in the woods for me, but this will make me learn some new shots. I will come back and play again.

Not too bad 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A good short course that can be stretched out to be more challenging. The course demands many different types of shots and is a lot of fun to play. It is also well maintained and aesthetically pleasing.

Cons:

If you care anything about your car I would not park anywhere near this course. I have been broken into along with dozens of others. The course is surrounded by crime ridden neighborhoods of the lowest order. It is hard to have fun or focus on your round when young gang members are breaking into your car.

Other Thoughts:

This course is pretty over rated. It doesn't provide anything that most courses don't as well. Hole 7 and 15 are memorable but this course is still a short old style course. It is well taken care of by the locals but the surrounding ghettos make it virtually unplayable for me except during large tournaments.

Outstanding Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 12, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Really well maintained course. Every time I have played this course I see the guy on the golf cart driving around cleaning up. The pin positions are always different. I once played two days in a row and it felt like a different course. Good mix of holes from strong arm open holes to wooded holes that take more accuracy.

Cons:

Like said in other reviews, the neighborhood is kind of bad but I haven't really experienced it first hand.

Other Thoughts:

My favorites are holes 14 and 15. If 15's pin is set at the close pin it's an easy eagle. It's a par 5 so it's really hard not to par it even at the long pin.

Fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is fairly easy to play and navigate. There is a good mix of wooded and open holes, with a variety of shots. Multiple pin placements give the course even more variety, as well as new looks for some of the shots.

Cons:

The neighborhood is a bit sketchy along with the reports of vandalism I have read about.

Restrooms and water are not readily available.

Other Thoughts:

This can be a fun course to play for all skill levels. It is not intended to be a super hard, challenging course, but I would not consider it a deuce or die course. Most every hole can be birdied with minimal effort by a pro, but none seem to be gimmies (most of the holes were in their middle to long positions the only times I have played the course). SSA for the course set up I played seemed to be around a 46-47 for the traveling tournament players that might be interested.

Excellent choice of play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Wonderful mix of open and wooded holes
-Well laid out: course is compact enough that returning to your car is not a huge hike
-Variety of shots required for course
-Excellent mix of holes:
-Distance
-Finesse
-Dogleg
-Turn and Fade
-Pin placement changes, making it a new course every time
-Well kept and clean
-Beautiful scenery
-Many friendly players
-Technically demanding
-Great hole names

Cons:

-Recently the pins have been moved to spots not located on maps. Not really bad, just unexpected
-Graffiti on hole maps occasionally. Cleaned up as of late
-Almost no elevation change on holes

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, this is an amazing course. Beautiful lay out, well groomed holes, and a ton of fun. One of the two courses that I recommend above all others. Technically challenging, with both long holes needing bombs and short holes needing an accurate tosses. Not too many places to REALLY lose a disc, and you can see almost every pin from near the tee. Great maps at holes and good hole names.

Entrance is not the main parking lot for the park, but one which indicates the disc golf course. Right by the parking lot is a putting green too.

Not to be missed.

Excellent Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Multiple pin placements. I am not talking about like 2 pin placements per hole but 3-4 on every hole. Plus the pin placements actually make each hole different and not just add 50-80 feet like other courses.

Nice long concrete teepads.

#15 is the signature hole with the super long pin being just over 500 feet.

Cons:

The parking lot for the course can be hard to find your first time out.

Also there have been less than a handful of break-ins in recent years. Bad idea to leave any valuables in the car while you play. If you do...don't leave it in plain sight in your car.

Other Thoughts:

If I introduce anyone to the sport I like to take them here and Lenora park. Lenora park to get the use to throwing a disc and then here so they can try out a variety of shots. The locals move the pins every couple weeks so you can can get a different game every time you play there.

The course can get a little dirty at times but all the clean up is done by local players with little help from the county.

Play this course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

This is the best Atlanta course at the time. Cement tees, good signage, well kept fairways, multiple pin placements. Good variety of shots, dense rough at times. When I played this course as a beginner, I found a lot of discs, but lost a lot too.

Cons:

Neighborhood.
Sometimes you can run into ongoing tournaments, so check the course schedule on PDGA.

Other Thoughts:

Course layout has good logical progression, don't need a map for this one.

Ah, sweet Redan. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 2, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pin options allow this course to be the friendly course you want to keep coming to and at the same time allows a monster to come out and reek havoc during tournament time. (well not monster, but definately harder)

Gives you oppurtunity to throw multiple shots.

Hazards are around, mainly trees so course maintenance is a must.

Great people and group of golfers who really care about this course.

A great layout for everyone, pro, and intermediate. You can come here and have a fun round of golf.

Cons:

Not in the best of areas. Have had problems with vandalism and some car break ins.

Can get a bit on the trashy side, but the locals do an outstanding job on the up keep and course maitenence.

Could use some added distance.

Other Thoughts:

Gives me remeberance of a links golf course (ball golf), looks easy but at the end of the day, you might be fairly surprised at your score. She might beat up on ya if you lack control of your disc, but after a few rounds you will appreciate this gem. If you are a control player, get ready because there are birds to be found at Redan.

The ultimate classic. Has an old school charm to it.

A shotmakers course where everyone can be competitve and have a great time.

Gives you a chance to make that great shot that will bring you coming back.

A must play.

Best Overall Park in Atlanta 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Having multiple pin positions really helps to keep this course interesting. Additionally it has a good mix of open and wooded holes and nice sized concrete teepads for all of the holes. It is seperated from the rest of the park so you never really get people wandering around in the middle of the course.

Cons:

This often isn't the cleanest park. I also always seem to get eaten alive by bugs during the summer months. Finally sometimes all of the holes will seemingly be set to easy/short positions which will really kill the fun.

Other Thoughts:

I always see things about break ins in other reviews but have never personally witnessed any in my 7 years of playing this course fairly regularly.

An ATL Must-Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

3-4+ pin positions on every hole that are rotated frequently; the course gets lots of love from the locals in upkeep and has potential to be amazing if the parks system ever starts to help out; great mix of open and tightly wooded holes that will challenge anyone from beginner to seasoned pro; high fun factor, this is a course that you can play time and again and it never gets old. Secluded area offset from rest of park.

Cons:

As mentioned in the previous posts there is the occasional car break-in -- easily avoided by not leaving valuables in sight. Also the upkeep can be shabby at times as its entirely volunteer based.

Other Thoughts:

This is a must play if you're coming to the Atlanta area...it continues to be a favorite among locals. Weekly local action: Sunday doubles @ 10am; Tuesday doubles @ 5:30pm

The course was sweet. Lots of pin placement options. Well designed and maintained. Good use of stairs to accomodate rough terrains.

Cons:

Cars being broken into would seem to be a big problem, as it is not the safest of areas, and the course is predominantly far away from the parking lot. Its kind of like a secluded parking lot as well.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this course. it was kind of tacked on to the end of one of our trips, but it fit the bill nicely.

Cons:

kind of a dirty park, lots of trash around the tee boxes. ex....beer cans, broken chairs, old broken brooms scattered around that were originally there to clean off the tee boxes

Good course for beginning players, It would be a great course if someone just put a little effort into cleaning it up a bit.
