Steamboat DGC in Pierre (Pronounced Pier),South Dakota Is Being Stripped Due To Construction! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Steamboat is (was) an 18 hole course right on the banks of the wide Missouri River. On # 17, it would be possible to throw your disc into river. No-one could throw it over the Missouri here. It's way too wide. Like 1500 feet.

The park is lovely, lushly green and very clean. It's flat with lots of scattered, mature trees. They are spaced far enough apart they should be fairly easy to avoid. You may want to roll under a couple at times. There is a kiosk at the start with rules and a nice memorial to a golfer named Kyle Stover. The trapezoid shaped concrete tee pads are very good. Some of them have a black coating over the concrete which I thought was a nice change of pace. The baskets are DGA Mach III's with the s,ways hard to read red numbers. There is a next tee arrow hanging from most of the baskets. The tee signs are on heavy duty 6" x 6" posts. The signs are small and adequate.

The course plays at kind of an recreational level. Holes are mostly in the 275' to 350' range but because of the flatness and scattered trees most shots are more or less straight. Not a lot of shot shaping is required.

Here is the problem. The city is installing a water treatment facility in the park. It looks like holes 5 to 11 have been taken out. I have no idea what the course will look like after the completion of the facility. There will still be enough room for 18 if they shorten a few or squeeze them in more.

Cons:

Besides the obvious construction going on....

Course is flat.

Probably some interference from pedestrians.

No much shot shaping needed.

Other Thoughts:

This is such a shame to lose so much course to construction. It will interesting to see what the redesign might look like. I hope they gather input from the disc golfing community. As far as rating Steamboat, I don't think it would be fair to rate it down because of a water treatment plant so I'm going to give it the rating it currently has.

Pros:

course has great distances short and long-long holes
not to many natural hard obstacles

Cons:

can be crowded at times, with shelters near
could use more trash cans
no official pins or t boxes
the coarse map and pars arent posted

Other Thoughts:

there will soon have concrete t pads and pins
city has planted new grass after the flooding and are updating other coarse features in 2013

Along the river 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Good layout with mature trees as obstacles
-Nice baskets
-Holes aren't crowded, park is very big and course is in three different parts of it.
-Practice basket with putting ring around it
-Local disc golf club: Pierre Area Sharpe Shooters
-Shelter, garbages, bathrooms near start/finish
-Detailed map with descriptions of each hole, check this out right behind hole one tee box
-Tons of parking
-Great views of the Missouri river and bridge
-Good variations in distance, most holes have multiple lines to use so they're not just right or left hand holes
-Good for players of all skill levels

Cons:

-Tees are only marked by a yellow pole thing and some of those are missing. They are also natural. Not in bad shape or anything buy not as nice as others.
-No elevation, is right next to the river and is very flat
-Tees don't have signs on them so navigation can be slow if you haven't been here before. The course also goes under the bridge then across a road if you aren't paying attention you could miss these
-Pierre is hot in the summer!
-Vandalism can be a problem although it is usually fixed pretty quick

Other Thoughts:

This is the only course in Pierre, Powerhouse Alley is about 6 miles away and is a little nicer but this is a good course. Worth a play if you're here. Capitol sports on Pierre st downtown has a decent selection of discs- mostly innova but a few of other brands as well.

nice layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 18, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is seeminly nicely laid out. Park setting so it is clean and well kept. Holes have a small variety of length, but fairly consistant. Much of the course is on the shore of the Missouri River but the River really is not a threat to swallow your favorite disk. Trees in play for all but maybe 2 holes.

Cons:

Course needs some updating. Baskets are previously mobile baskets sunk in concrete. Baskets are too short and many are tilted in the concrete. Course needs some TLC concerning the baskets. Lift and straighten.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this course. It is a good play and the Missouri River bugs were not an issue on the day I played. Holes 7-10 were the most challenging and are also the holes most skipped by the locals as it is under the bridge and these holes do interrupt the flow of the course. Adjustments as listed in CONS will make this a great South Dakota course.
