Discs to Soldiers Overseas

i think the kids of Haiti is a better place to donate. those kids can are actually in need and do not get a paycheck.

You're right, Plastic is not a NEED. I should not have used that word.

Let me know when you start something for Haiti to help meet real needs. I will help out.

Sending discs to Seoul helps to distract them from the thought of missing home....it is something tangible that I can do with nothing more than donated discs. I already have an address and the contact to send them to.

Could also send some baskets if there are none. We sent two mach lites and 40-some discs to Kuwait.

Buddy got home, but he left the baskets and discs for the next crew

That is so cool!

I think at that point I would have to raise money to send everything as the shipping cost would be beyond my current scope.

Where they are in Seoul, there are a few courses...they can drive about 50min to a nicer one with baskets.

This is totally awesome. I have served three tours in Afgahnistan, as well as one on a Navy Vessel at sea and I missed discin' the whole time. Big props to everyone who donates.

Really dont want to word this wrong, but not sure I agree with your opinion on the matter. What good will a disc do to a kid in Haiti when their needs are much more drastic than a simple reminder of life at home in the US?

Both causes are good and people should be able to donate to both. For me, I see the discs being more meaningful to the US troops. A reminder of life at home and a chance for them to forget about the awful place they are in even if just for a few minutes. They have the basic needs provided in shelter, clothes and food/water, so something a little materialistic might offer them a little piece of normal in their hectic life.

The kids in Haiti have much larger issues, they lack the basic needs of humanity in most cases, like homes, clean water, food and clothes. I am not sure how big an impact sending discs would make when they need the basics more than anything. I think the greater impact would be putting shoes on their feet, clothes on their back or food in their bellies.

Again, I hope I am not wording this wrong or the tone comes off wrong in written form. Giving is always good and charities need to be supported by people who can afford to. One is not more worthy than the other, they just require different things. Apologies if I was unable to portray my point in writing as well as I see it in my mind.

Ricky, Well said. I agree. I don't think JKDisc was referring to sending plastic to Haiti as much as the use of the word "need" in reference to our donation efforts. You are right, the are both worthy of our time and money...

I just know for me, I have two overflow bags full of discs I don't use. These could easily be sent to someone who could use them in the same way that my kids donate unused toys to Goodwill. We are choosing to share what we have for those who don't have.

In the end, the issue is sharing what we have been blessed with (money, time, etc.) regardless of where we are...if we see a way to help someone physically, emotionally, or financially, we should be willing to step up. Something that is badly missing today.

I think we are getting off the trail...if you are wanting to donate...PM me, and I will provide you the address to send discs. If not, move on.

I highly recommend sending packages to the Military Post Office. You would save $400-$1000.

This is awesome. One of my dear friends is a Chaplain in the Army. He's said that he has had to deal with a lot of situations from Soldiers dealing with various issues..

What a great idea sending discs to troops..

I think donating discs anywhere is good.. I rebuilt a dg course at my church camp this summer all with donations. Unfortunately funds ran out once everything was purchased so I will have to see how long it will be till I try to fund more for discs..

Some stuff set aside for solomon's Haiti trip, some stuff set aside for the Okthrowberfest dying contest, and now, rummaging thru the box of FSOT to see what I have to send to troops...
PM'd you hendersondayton, and coming from a veteran, Thank you!

Thank you for your service.

OP,
Tell your cousin to quit drinking his paychecks on the hill in Itaewon and order a few online. Shipping to Yongsan or any other apo military address costs the same as shipping to Cali. Plus, where courses exist, discs are sold. He'd probly have better memories if he got out and about and met some locals that aren't tied to the Li'l America that is Yongsan in the heart of Seoul.

That being said, I sent my brother a couple putters when he was deployed in the Middle East. No courses there though, a few baskets would have been nice.

There are numerous places to donate discs to. There are schools and summer camps, Solomon.Trenton's Haiti drive, and the troops.
The thread is not about which one is better.
Giving to haiti gives the kids some recreational activity, and a plate to eat their dinner on :)
Giving to the troops gives a reminder of home, a show of public support, a way to let off some stress...and a dinner plate to eat MREs on.

More donated discs mean more dinner plates for all!

Thinking a bit more, if he's stationed in Seoul, Yongsan is a great place to be- not a hardship assignment, many are there with families. A well established post with movie theater, multiple restaurants and bars of different types. basketball, tennis, softball, football, soccer, a driving range, a golf course, all with leagues. Multiple gyms with basketball, table tennis and badminton leagues/ clubs- an arts and craft center, and a music center... that's all on post. Plus he's in the heart of Seoul- a city larger than NYC. When I was stationed there, I DJ'd in a club outside post, and a couple clubs across Seoul near Hong-ik University, threw darts and played pool on league near post, and had more than enough watering holes to keep my drinking arm in shape. Other guys were more involved with sport leagues

Sorry, but sending discs/baskets to troops stationed in Seoul with courses nearby is not a "cause." If anyone's going to send discs to troops, send 'em to the guys on hardship assignments. Yongsan (Seoul) has the funds and would put in a course if a few troops/ military families showed interest and passed that info up the chain of command.

If your cousin is that hard up and destitute/ unwilling or afraid to get out in the middle of Seoul, he should take up the cause, research what is involved and who would benefit from installing a course on post and find out who on post needs that info to make it happen. At least he'll have something to do if he's not able to find something on post or anywhere in a city bigger than NYC. There are plenty of English teachers around Seoul that live there, all of whom have social lives not tied to the military. He could make friends with some of them to get to know some fun places to go out around town.

Seoul is also a quick flight (easy 4 day weekend or a week of leave) from SE Asia if he needs a vacation.

I was not aware of the "hardship" situation. I was just trying to do something nice for them.

I assume that with this logic, we shouldn't need to send food to anyone here in america considering there are Kroger's near by? I am only trying to show support. Nothing else.
