Can We Reach 100 Mph?

I didn't know the speeds were so low. I would have guessed that top pros already top 100.

Is it possible that the guys / gals with the natural athletic ability to get discs to 100mph are more gainfully employed elsewhere in sports? Put a disc in the hands of an MLB pitcher or NFL quarterback, and I bet it hits triple digits. Might not go very far, though. I want to see Brett Farve OH a Predator.

Also, I imagine the forms and techniques used in disc golf have the power potential of the form and technique used in the big throwing sports. Pro hockey slapshot, for example, hover near the 100 mph range, and that's with the aid of a 6' lever. Not every sport needs a 100mph value.

The guts throw and catch record is now around 135mph.
Ummm... kph, right?

http://wfdf.org/worldrecords/?r_sec=6&h_cat=42&h_class=1&h_his=1

It was 134 kph when the gun registered the speed and the disc traveled 14 meters (~45 ft). I have the video of the 129 kph throw & catch but stopped filming before the 134 kph throw & catch. Nez and I calculated that if the disc was traveling 134 kph for 14 meters, there would be 11 frames of video at 33.3 milliseconds per frame (30 frames/sec). There were actually 18 frames so the disc slows down quite bit from the radar reading taken maybe 3-4 meters after release. I'll see about getting the video up on YouTube.

Good catch. I was going to check that but the edit time limit got me. That 134kph works out to around 84mph.

would a blizzard be able to be thrown faster? based on my throwing experience, I would think not. 100mph seems pretty far out of reach on flat ground.

I'm no physics expert, but it is my understanding that "Speed 13 is Speed 13", regardless of weight. I believe the physics behind Blizzard is not that it goes faster but that it takes less energy to get it up to speed.

I could be completely wrong.

McBeth could have or was on the path to baseball.

According to the newest Discgolfer Mag, he plays baseball very well.

I asked him about it around a year ago and at the time I think he said he still practiced with his old team some times. I belive he was a pitcher. I don't have the new mag, didn't realise one was coming. :)

David Wiggins Jr also played baseball. Both McBeth and Lil Wig delayed going pro in disc golf because they were contemplating collegiate baseball. I doubt anyone will ever hit the 100mph mark. 90 would be an amazing number to hit at this point.

Yeah, but few collegiate pitchers hit 100mph without MLB caliber pitching coaches. Hell, very few MLB pitchers EVER hit the century mark. Playing baseball at collegiate level well does not mean they can hit Aroldis Chapman's speed.

According to this thread:

The top pros were throwing in the high 70's and low 80's.

With improvements in disc tech, and Blizzard, do you think it's possible to throw a disc 100 mph?
I'm not sure 100mph will be hit or not. The current Guts speed record was set with a 110g disc so it was already really light. That's a lot of speed to make up and wide rimmed discs only make throwing faster more difficult.

I'm not familiar enough with a baseball pitch to know how they are able to throw 100mph. My thought is that the way you can grip a ball compared to the way you can grip a disc would be a big factor, otherwise the Guts record would be an overhand throw.

^^^ This.

100 mph is rarified territory, even among MLB pitchers, who arguably have the best training, coaching and mechanics in all ball sports. Even guys who are genetic freaks and can throw a baseball 85 in high school need years and years of practice and perfecting their form to come close to 100. Methinks disc golf is a different thing altogether and it'd be darn near impossible to hit 100mph. I sure would love to see somebody prove me wrong, though.

The one thing that I know for sure is that I'll never get anywhere close, ever.

Man will never do a 4-minute mile.
