[Innova] The Tern!

I've been throwing the Champion Terns for a few months now and the 3 that I have thrown were all pretty domey. I decided to pick up a Star Tern and there generally 2 types. One was pretty domey like the champs that I currently throw and the others were fairly flat. I decided to pick the domey one, but I was wondering if anyone know how the flat ones fly compared to the domey ones or vice versa?

I just received a 175 Jolly Launcher Tern that I am loving. I fought giving it a chance, but I'm glad I did. It fits perfectly between my new Star Destroyer and seasoned Star Vulcan. This might be my longest disc yet. That extra bit of glide translates into a lot more distance. I'd say an extra 50ft for me at least. This is my first disc in Innova's new Champion plastic . It feels much more floppy than my other champions. Hopefully the old champion durability is carried over.

I'm proud to say I am the reason that Mr. Butlerton got a Tern. Well, half the reason. The other half was his excellent playing ability that allowed him top choice of the open box for our league.

ranger: my wife got a Starlite Tern and she likes it. However, she's getting the same flights out of hers that I do out of mine...she tops off around 225 distance and I'm around 325-360. So I would reckon that means the Starlites are even more understable than their regular Star counterparts. (she has clean form, so that's not the issue)

I posted a short book on post 870 in this thread about my experience with the Champ and Starlites if you're interested.

As a result of this thread, http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97744&highlight=tuning , I may also have to try to tune my 151g Starlite to see if I can get some more high speed turn out of it.

Dude, awesome review. That's some solid info.

I throw fairways the same distance as you do, and am currently searching for a max D driver to call my own. I had tons of success with my first unLace, but after chucking it over a fence I replaced it with a dud (understable to the point of unthrowable). Rather than playing the game of trying to search for the perfect replacement, I'm doing some research and trying to try out a few different molds. The Tern has definitely been on my radar, and from the sound of it, a Starlite Tern would be a good place to start!

This thread makes me want to throw my Terns again. :hfive:

I just dug out my star tern and tossed it a couple of days.
Still a little too much disc for this noodle arm (almost no turn, and no extra distance).
I will keep on with my saints for now, and keep working on getting > 325'-350'

I guess I just don't get this. Seems to me that if you can get a Saint to 350, a Tern would be longer. Terns are the longest discs I've thrown, and I rarely throw farther than 350. I've tried the lower speeds in many, many discs. I can't get 9s even close really. next closest down would be Renegades.

Keep working with it man. You'll get there.

Arm Speed comes to mind.

Yes he could have the arm speed for the Saint, but if he throws the Tern the same way it will go maybe 10ft further or the same distance. Plus it will be more overstable for him due to the arm speed needed to get the Tern up to it's flying speed.

How does a Champ Tern fly for you guys throwing at 350ft of power and what weight are you throwing?

I throw a 175 Climo Tern and a 171 Champ Tern, in addition to my max weight Star Tern.

There are very subtle differences between the Climo and the Champ, but the Champ is also a first run and has been in my bag since release day. The Climo Tern has a nice, subtle high speed turn with a moderate fade. Killer glide, of course, but still finishes left (RHBH).

The regular Champion Tern has more turn, but not significantly more. The fade is more or less the same. The difference is I can put a touch of hyzer on it and get a laser beam with very little fade for a distance driver. When I do it with the Climo, I get the same lazer beam but it hooks up far more at the end of the flight.

I use the regular Champ for long, sweeping anhyzers that hold the line all the way. The Climo fights out just a little bit at the end...moreso if I put more height on it, obviously. I can also do an odd little flex shot with the Climo Tern where I put a touch of anny on it and it turns right by a good amount but still comes back at the end...but finishes to the right of where I released it. Not a common shot at all, but cool to have when I need it.

Hope that helps!

I throw a 168 as I feel that is the best weight. I may be biased though. lol

I don't throw my Terns 350 though, but I can get a nice solid straight shot with some fade at the end,or create a very nice S-Shot with one.

I was getting about the same distance, but I feel like if it doesn't go 40'-50' farther - what's the point.
Also being the star version, I felt it should have a little to high speed turn, if I am throwing it correctly.
It only dipped one or two times, otherwise it just flew straight with low speed fade at the end.
It might just need a little seasoning to fly the way I think it should.
On a side note, I can throw my teebirds and my Buzzz almost this same distance.
So i will stick with the slower stuff for now.

hmmm

My teebirds don't get close to a good throw with my star tern. I usually put a slight hyzer on it and get some really nice movement back and forth.

I've parked 400 foot holes with this disc that I could never achieve in the past because of trees in the way. It's definitely not straight for me but it works really well in certain situations where a straight shot will plow into a tree trunk.

I don't know if it's my furthest flying disc but it's the easiest disc to throw far.

Normally I don't use relatively new discs to my bag for tournaments, but I was compelled to give my 175 Champ Tern a chance. It had yet to let me down in the practice field, but with money on the line I tend to stick with my reliable few. This thing straight bombed when I threw it. On flat ground it hyzer flipped to straight gave me just a foot or two of turn over about 325ft and gently faded out to park itself under the basket. It was sooooo straight. I chose to throw it because the fairway was a tight, ever thinning triangle shape with ob on both sides. Needless to say, my doubles partner was happy. The more I use it the more I like it. I doubt I'd use much with windy conditions though.

The new glow champ terns look to be a fair bit more stable.

I watched a friend (who puts his champ terns 450-500 on a golf line) throw a glow into a 15mph headwind with only a few degrees of hyzer without the disc flipping past flat. I wouldn't even consider doing that with a regular champ tern.

I've ordered a few to try out and will hopefully be able to add my own experience later this week. I'm hoping that this will kick out the seasoned tournament giant that I use for distance in mild to moderate headwinds.
