Windy day: Stay or go?

The winds today are reaching over 40 mph. Planned on going DGing today but the winds have me thinking twice about going. Who really plays in these extreme windy conditions?

Rain and wind are usually enough to keep me off the course for casual days. In New England we generally don't have a lot of wind to battle, so playing in the wind is a skill that is seldom needed on tourney days.

Why not hit the practice field and work on throwing in all directions? On the few days we get around here like this, I like to take stable and understable discs (along with the beefcakes) to the field to better understand their strengths and limitations in winds.

I also like to work on my putting. In a tourney in high winds, putting separates the field more than anything else.

I do.

Each time you have an opportunity to play in "unique" conditions, you should take it and hopefully learn something that may become useful down the road.

Yup, I'd be out there.

I don't get any better at playing in adversity if I avoid it.

It would take wind that I can't stand up or trees are falling on me to keep me off the course.

In a tournament, you don't get to choose the conditions. If you are planning on playing events, get some practice in the wind. You can find out for yourself exactly what happens when you putt into a 40mph headwind. You can also find out which of your drivers is the most reliable into the wind. Better to learn these skills today than during a tournament.

If you don't plan to play events, stay home and stay warm.

If it was below 50 with 40 MPH winds I'd probably stay home. But if it is warm enough the windy days can be a blast. Temperatures are probably dependent on where you live and what you are used to dealing with. But wind is fun. You can watch discs do all types of funky things. And it is good practice.

I am quite used to playing in the wind. Here in KS it gets windy a lot. I try to avoid playing in winds above 25+ but sometimes that is unavoidable. The worst winds I have played in were a couple of weeks ago when it was steady 30 mph and gusting to 45. That was miserable but comical at the same time. It was not something that I would normally play in but 3 of us had scheduled a meet up on a new course and it was just something that we had to deal with.

Only one way to get good and comfortable with playing in the wind, and that is to practice in those conditions. Get out there!

This. I hardly ever play as it is. So any wind practice I can get is good.

I'd definitely go. First of all, it's a great learning experience. Second, it's absolutely hilarious :D Pick up a spot where you can drive straight into a headwind, and see what your discs do. You also get very immediate feedback on the nose angle you're throwing. Pick up another spot where you have rear side wind and throw really high distance anhyzers and break your distance record! (Around here we call high winds "distance winds"). Choose the windiest basket and practice some putting. Experiment with different things on how to get the discs in the basket in that wind. Upside down, putting with a driver, driver upside down, etc.

I love windy days, so much fun things to do :)

both of these. putting/upshot practice is my favorite thing to do.

Hate the wind!

High wind & rain are usually the only things that will keep me home. Oh & maybe freezing cold temps!
#1: High wind
#2: Rain
#3: Super-cold weather
#4: Crappy course
