2013 USADGC - June 7-9 - Toboggan, MI

in 2011 we had a casual group throwing upshots up to 3's green while lizard games were going on ... we tried to tell them to hold on a second, but they just got rude and threatening ... unbeknownst to them as they climbed up the hill, the guy they were spewing threats at was Ben Askren LOL ... nothing ending up happening, but man THAT woulda been funny!

I saw something about the course being closed for non-tournament play on June 6th. Is this the case? I thought tournament play was only on the 7th-9th.

Thanks

Yeah, I tried to play yesterday and today. I even got there really early today. Hopefully it will actually be playable on weekdays. At least you'll probably avoid the several casual groups of 10-15 people who literally refuse to let you play through to your face and threaten to beat your ass when you walk ahead of them.

Chuckers present a challenge at all courses, but they have the same right to the course as
you or me. I played Friday and Monday and both were three hour plus round. It is frustrating, but I expect to run into this. Not any different than BL on a y given weekend. Do you best to educate and try to not let the ignorance bring you down. On a side note, how is it free, I bought wristbands at the park office both days?

You are correct. It is also closed this Thursday for players that are registered for the DGLO to play. Then next Thursday it's closed for players playing in USADGC. To the person that stopped the metro police, THANK YOU! Sorry you are having a poor time out there at the course.

The $2 daily wristbands are only required for Black Locust...you just made a donation to the park.
If you tell them you're here to play disc golf, they assume you mean the regular, permanent course (i.e. Black Locust). Beyond the park entry fee, there's no pay to play fee for the Toboggan.* That's just the way it is.

* but maybe there should be!

I think you should pull the baskets until June 6th. My flight arrives at 1PM, if you have them back in by 2 that is acceptable. :)

Hmmm...I specifically noted that I wanted the wristbands for Toboggan when purchasing them. I guess the associate in the office did not know better. I have made worse donations, thanks for the reply Bogey.

Thanks Gonnagal.

Looks like I'll be playing a round on Thursday morning before USADGC (not playing in the tourney)

If anyone wants to meet at 8am let me know!

I'm fine with casual players, but Toboggan is only open for a couple weeks a year, so why not preserve the experience with that in mind? $10 course fee with $2 going to Kensington to staff it with a gate person like Black Locust and someone on a Gator. The other $8 going to the tournaments. Maybe then I wouldn't be hauling 10 empty beer cans in my Grip's rainfly when I throw/hike up hole 2. I guarantee not a single player who is playing DGLO or USADGC threw cans in the shrubs (the people the course is installed for). It's not just about rate of play or stopping fights, it's about the idgaf attitude of casual groups and how it affects the course and others around them.

I cannot tell you how much aggravation this causes my as well, but I am not playing in either tournament. I am not interested in doing so. I am a casual. I do not litter, play in group of ten, trash the course or start fights. I know your comments are not directed at me, but they are generalizing the issue. I was there on Friday and Monday. I did see players of these tournaments playing in a group of ten or better. We eventually played through. The course, as it is now, is set up for general play and should be taken advantage of, by those of appropriate skill level, while open. And, in my opinion, should stay that way. I have no interest in 8 of my dollars going to a tournament. If the money goes to the course, which would benefit the tournament and BL, I would pay to play. Being the responsible "adult" is always frustrating in regards to litter, boorish behavior and vandalism. But, slow play is the right of a player and simply needs to be tolerated with a generous helping of patience. I appreciate you opinion man, and am not trying to start crap, just think stupidity comes in all shapes, including tournament players.

I think you're mistaken if you think that all tournament players have reasonable course etiquette. I've seen plenty of tourney players take over courses in groups of 8+ throwing multiple shots and refusing to let smaller groups play through. I've also seen plenty of tourney players litter. Likely casuals are a good chunk of the problem, but I guarantee that some of the players practicing for the tournaments are contributing to the problem.

Maybe pretend to be someones caddy, just an idea to beat the system. Plus I don't recommend playing the course alone.

Meet a new discer, and not lose as many discs.

Good call. Im meeting a tourney player there so maybe they will let me pass as a caddy.

I have the disagree on the having to tolerate slow play, in ball golf and disc golf, I assume, if you're playing slow, or have a large group, its common courtesy to let the faster group play through...but them that the real problem now a days it seems most people have forgotten what common courtesy is in all situations in life it seems....Thats a general statement....not directed at you by the way....

For sure Loki, can't really teach common courtesy to someone who utterly lacks any. I was just saying, it is inconvenient, but everyone has a right to be there, whether they conform to our standards or not. I really agree with everyone here, and complain as much about this problem as most. I don't see a solution except courtesy and we simply will find times when it is absent. I tried to do a lot of teaching this weekend out there, spotting, courtesy, playing through. Unlikely much of it was recieved well, but I will keep on man.
