Saw a couple of posts about visiting Sugaree this summer and just wanted to let everyone know the course is closing on June 1. Not getting near enough traffic to justify keeping the course maintained.
Need to focus on getting the property ready for a july wedding and growing Christmas trees, which is what pays the bills.
The amount of weed-eating required to keep the course from being a plastic easter egg hunt is staggering. I fought the good fight, but not this summer.
Depending on where my energy level is in August, I may re-open, but please do not schedule a trip in june or july.

Man, you're going to let a little thing like a wedding interfere with disc golf?? Are you drinking O'Douls and Shirley Temples now too? :p

Just ask Brother Dave or Brother Dave's brother about the house of horrors, they will tell you...lotta work to do on the old farm.

Well, you'll probably have a good number of people around for the wedding. Sounds like a good opportunity to hand out some scythes and gas trimmers to all the guests.

Not a bad idea. It will look like Vietnam by then with all this rain. Thousands of stump sprouts that will be head high.

Wouldn't Brother Dave's Brother just be Dave? No, I guess not, but that made me think and laugh.

Sugaree is some pretty land, but it has to be an endless job to try and tame the abundant plant growth there during the summer.

Tough news, but completely understandable.

I don't understand how you managed it, to begin with, and I only saw it in an earlier, and presumably smaller, version.

I'll be crossing my fingers that in the future, you can mange it on at least a seasonal basis, and I'll get a chance to visit again.

Maybe it's time for a judicious application of Agent Orange.

Yup. I don't think you made it to 13, but it has two lanes and takes an entire day just to weed-eat that one hole. Good place for a swing blade and and Caddyshack quotes.

I was stealing from Peter to pay Paul. In another year my tree farm would be in shambles.

Sorry to hear this! I was hoping to swing through and play. Best of luck reshaping in the future. I'm only a few hours away, and I have my summers off as a teacher; I'd be happy to help.

It is obviously a tremendous amount of work. At Stoney Hill I share duties with my brother and co-owner, and many fairways can be mown, at least in part. (The greatest thing about throwing over the pond is not the challenge and excitement, but the fact that it requires almost no maintenance). Seeing Sugaree, and imaging all the work for one person, exhausts me just thinking about it.

.....and one more addition to the extensive list of great courses I can't play anymore, or at least for the time being. Bummer.

Good luck with the wedding, I know that's going to be a lot of work. Thanks again.

I gave it five years to be self-sustaining and it just didn't make it. I think a stand-alone disc golf course has to have a core of local support to survive, but it never materialized, other than Burton Davis (climbtoo) who was a big help after the ice storm.
The good news is there are several other great options in the mountains ; Ashe County Park, Elk Mountain and soon there will be one on Beech Mountain to fill the void.
I want to especially plug Elk Mountain for out-of-towners. Two courses, camping, great food,a great brewery as well as other things to do for non-dgers.

This is sad news, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
I'm getting out while the getting is good (before someone tumbles over the cliff at 18) and we did have some fun ! Gonna be cool to watch nature re-take the course.

Rich - I hate hearing the news, but I completely understand why it needs to be done. Thanks for all your hard work to make it one of the best courses in the region. Only played there three times, and only once with all 25 holes, but I had a blast each time.

You need to find some college students looking for an internship in landscaping or Christmas tree growing, and use their free labor to maintain the course.

played here one time and it was one of my most memorable and enjoyable disc golf experiences. thanks for everything, rich!
