I'm looking to buy a couple pairs of shorts for the new season this week, and I figured you guys and gals would know best.

My only real requirement is that they be durable - I don't mind spending money so long as I don't wear them out.

What do y'all recommend?

Pata Baggies (or comparable knockoff), if you can get them on sale for about 30 bucks, are as simple and utilitarian as you can get. I bought 2 pairs 4 years ago for backpacking, and have used them probably 150 days a year each since. They wear like they're new. Deep side pockets, and the back pocket fits a mini or phone easily.

I bought a pair of ripstop cotton Dickies a couple of years ago, wish I had bought more. Soft, light, tough as hell but I haven't been able to find a pair like them since. :(

I like Sonoma cotton rip stop cargo shorts from Kohl's. They're cotton, so they're comfy and breathe well, and pretty durable. I've had a few pair for several years and they hold up well, plus the rip stop fabric keeps minor tears and stuff just that... minor.

If you have a Kohl's charge, they always send you sale coupons in the mail for 10% to 30% off, and there's always some sort of sale the coupon can be stacked with.

Dickies work shorts and Nike golf modern tech shorts. Dickies for cheap shorts that are going to last forever and the Nike tech ones for light, breathable and contouring.

Came in here's pro say this exact thing!! I also use regular dickies shorts and love them. They will outlive me that is for sure!

I wear Red Kap work shorts. Wife got me a pair on a whim and now that's the only thing I wear while playing. Light weight and super durable. They don't snag on thorns and nothing sticks to them.

FWIW, here's the only Rip Stop Short Dickies has on their website.
Bro D's post says he hasn't "been able to find a pair like 'em since."

Mr. Glass and Dave: are the ones you have different from the rip stop Dickies currently available in some way?

FWIW, If they make ripstop cargo shorts, I didn't find them on their site... only carpenter short. personally, I like the extra pockets on cargo shorts... they come in handy every once in a while, moresore than the hammer loop on carpenter's.

I've been wearing hybrid (swim trunks/regular) shorts lately and loving them. They're lightweight, stretchy, and built tough (for surfing and swimming). Great for active sports IMO.

I usually stick with O'Neill since they have great customer service and are built very well to begin with. There's a bunch of companies (Volcom, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, etc.) making these types of shorts these days.

Ive had a lot of luck with the regular nike drifit golf shorts. Theyre light, durable and breath well. Id suggest an outlet store or looking online, normal msrp is like $55 but i have gotten mine for $22-26 ea and its well worth it in the summer

Mountain Hardware Mesa V2. Super lightweight and tough. They bead water but they're not waterproof.

i wear boardshorts. and have been for over 5 years. no replacements yet. also will wear balla shorts.

so in another 5 years if they finally give out, ill just buy cheap ass ones from the thrift store. never liked spending much on clothes anyways

I'm shocked and a little disappointed this hasn't turned into a huge troll thread.

I recommend not asking people what kind of shorts you should wear. Believe in yourself.

Bro D said he like soft Dickies.

... happy now? :p

Columbia rip-stop cotton cargo shorts. Comfortable, cool and durable. I've had one pair for 7 years that are my principal warm weather shorts and other than some fading they function as if new.

I thought at least one person would say Daisy Duke, all she needs is scissors and jeans. The denim is super durable and you get full range of motion.
