[Drivers] Help me pick a slightly understable driver

Hey guys, my bag is almost set and I only need one thing. A go to distance driver for backhand shots.

I am using a Teebird or Stag(depends on mood) for all backhand drives and had very good luck with both out to about 350. Basically I want something in the 10-11 speed range(I think that is as fast as my BH can really handle well).

I would like to have a similar flight path as the Stag(slight turn and gentle forward fade), but able to get closer to 400ft more easily. I have tried several discs;

Champ Katana- did what I wanted distance wise but got too much turn and didn't usually come back at the end.

Champ Vulcan- same deal

Dragon Jun- this was close but I couldnt get it to turn over, and didn't love the thick deep rim.

Ace Race Heat- this was close but too unpredictable often would not come back and the high dome is not comfortable for my grip.

I fear I may have embarked upon the fruitless quest to find the "longer Teebird", and am willing to settle for something with some turn.

Since the Heat and Jun were in the neighborhood I used their stats as a jumping off point, the following are some I'm considering.

DD Hysteria- looks like a long TBish

Northman- basically looks like a faster Stag.

Inertia- may be too flippy would a Tesla be better?

Flow- looks okay, maybe too much turn?

Let me know I what you guys think.

dx destroyer , star wraith or dx wraith if form is clean. dx destroyer rides a gental turn 2 around 350 and flexes out at the very end. would be perfect for 400 ft slight turn overs imo. champ valk might also work

I have to say, at the D you're looking at, the Inertia will probably have too much HS turn, and the Tesla may have to strong of a fade. On the MVP threads, there's a lot of wishing for the elusive disc to fall between them.

I don't really like DX plastic for drivers, and currently have no base plastic in the bag. I just play too many wooded holes for them to last very long at a consistent stability.

For the Record I've tried both a DX and Pro Wraith and the were fantastic until they got too flippy.

Flow. It's not as US as the numbers suggest. GL is definitely more US than Opto though.

Northman is an SL.

I know it's a 12, but I cannot recommend the Champ Tern enough.

G Star Destroyer if you want just enough turn to give you the line drive distance, with a reliable fade. With your Teebird distance you will be fine with this, and it will put you to the next distance class.

If you want what the Vulcan/Katana did but more controllably, then champ Tern perhaps.

I know you said speed 10-11, but at 350' Teebird you can handle those discs once you get used to them, and they will be clearly further than the Teebirds.

If your form is really good you could probably control the inertia's turn. If you want to wait a little while before choosing, the axiom discs in that speed class should be coming out over the next several months.

Why not try a star wraith then? Or an Orc?

A Star Wraith, Champion Valkyrie, Fuzion Escape or a Star Orc would be my suggestions.

If you can get your hands on a pro Wraith that feels like star plastic, those are really sweet.

I'm kind of intrigued by the Flow, Orc and possibly a Star Wraith, something turned me off the Wraith when I was starting to bag it a couple years ago. I think I still have one in my backup box, I'll have to see if I can remember what the issue was.

The local PIAS had some Xout Wraiths and Orcs, and some new Flows I'll have to feel them up and see what looks good. May feel up some of the new Axioms when they come out as well.

If you have more suggestions keep them coming!

I only have thrown the Inertia out of the discs you mentioned. I love mine and get easy D with them. If you are good at your release angles a max weight Inertia may fit the bill. My 171g Neutron and Proton has less turn and more fade than my 167g Neutron. So a 175g may work for you.

The Tesla will probably not give you the turn you are looking for. Maybe a 150's class Proton? Others may have a better opinion on this as I only have a 164g and 174g Neutron and they are nice and straight with a good fade.

If you want to try something completely different the Switch is MVP's sleeper IMO. It has good turn and hard bite at the end. I can get mine to hold a turnover or drifting turn with a fade. Unique disc for sure. Even though its a speed 7 it goes almost as far as my Inertia, sneaky long.

(Or you could just beat the hell out of an Amp)

Ditto this. I throw my fairways about the same D as you do, and I found the Inertia to be more understable than I wanted.

It's faster than what you asked for, but my recommendation is a mid-160s Lace. We have about the same D like I said, and I can get my Laces out to 375', with occasional throws pushing 400'. They're faster than what you asked for, but have that same turn-then-forward-fade flight you mentioned. Laces are nice because their stability scales noticeably with their weight: the 161 I threw turned and burned, the new 166s I've thrown all have that sweet spot workable turn and easy D, and the 170s ones I've had start out more stable but beat into a beautiful sweet spot (took me about nine months of regular use to get there with one in Medium X-link). You can cover a lot of lines with a Lace line up. If it helps any, I pared mine with the Stag for a few months before I sought a fairway with more HSS.

Good luck.

this is a disc that I was searching for as well. And I found that the Krait is a great fit, it will bend/turn slightly, but stays straight with power and hyzer fades at the end. A DGA Rogue is another comfortable control driver, maybe slightly thinner rim and slightly more US, but a sweet disc, same with the Surge, Wraith, or Thunderbird or Valkyire.

For me, the Thunderbird is that go-to disc, but for more distance, I'm using a Krait, same type of flight path

so, to answer your question, I'd say Krait for slight turn, or Surge for more turn

Rogue is like a more controlled Surge, its sweet and there are some cool ones out there....only 13-16$ and cool plastic. Surge is slight US, but still has fade. haha and if you want REALLY US, get a mamba, haha the thing is crazy US, but I love it for oddball shots
