USDGC - Actual Tournament...

So as we congratulate Jeremy and clean up, we also start the process of planning USDGC 2017. (Actually the planning process for next year started awhile ago.) Feel free to share your thoughts on this year or previous years. Will read everything and try to respond as time allows.

Kick DGWT to the curb.

LIVE. STREAM.

Nikko's antics on basket #3 in the 3rd round have to stop at some point right? He misses a putt, poses for a whole bunch of dramatic pauses as if this is the first time in the history of the world a disc of his has had the balls to fall out and then he has a temper tantrum as if someone just stole his jell-o. Enough already -- in this case it wasn't even a good putt, he missed high right. Get over yourself and move on -- additionally, get the heck out of the way. Please don't give me "competitive" or "passion", or "focus" or "desire" or "the money". It's boorish behavior. Please don't give me "courtesy warnings" or anything other than you should stop behaving like a spoiled brat because you take some pride in yourself and have respect for the people that you're with. Just stop.

(If there's another thread bashing/defending Nikko over this -- sorry, delete this and point me in the right direction . . . too many threads for this tourney to keep up with . . . )

I would definitely return to the media policy from last year. While I understand it adds a layer of complexity to planning the event, it's vital to growing the event. I don't have vacation time to take a trip to Rock Hill, and I don't get nearly the same excitement from next day videos. Terry and the rest of the Smashboxx crew do a great job of putting me on the course following the pros. SpinTV is full of graphics and low on "meat".

I also think that you guys should drop the DGWT. While it's nice that Jussi's making such a strong effort to grow disc golf outside of the US, as well as for the pros we all enjoy watching, he's stubbornly refusing to realize that he's alienating the fanbase that made it possible for him to be in the position he's lucky enough to hold currently.

I greatly appreciate the huge undertaking you and your team endure year after year to put on this storied event. It can't be easy to host any event, let alone one of this magnitude, but it feels like this year was doomed from the start, from a fan perspective. I know this is asking a lot from a probably already thinly stretched team but please think beyond Rock Hill when you're planning.

Harold Duvall is part owner of Innova, right? DGWT, and Discmania are essentially Innova vehicles. And the USDGC is Innova's premier event.

Why would next year be any different?

Nobody needs to defend the behavior, but you need to get over it. Sports have emotional players. People throw tantrums. If the card takes issue with it they have rules for that.

As far as I know, there was no written plan for live stream submitted to the USDGC that the team could evaluate.

I am, however, genuinely interested in what the perceived value is of live streaming is. Is it equivalent of the single day and VIP passes are?

Would hundreds and hundreds of spectators watch on-line for $20 for a 4-day pass, or $10 for the final round. Would the inclusion of a 100% store credit at the USDGC On-Line Pro Shop for early registration greatly enhance the pre-funding to make a quality, live stream investment a reasonable gamble?

I've really enjoyed the watching the tournament this year, and am 1,000 away with no experience running tournament. So take my comments as you will, and I only offer them because you asked and you clearly want to make this event the best you can.

Having two basket locations really didn't work this year. There were a couple of holes (and this may have only been the first round) where both baskets were installed, and could be seen in the camera shot. Additionally, there was way too much paint on the ground for a few of the holes. Any time the 10m circles overlapped, it became really difficult to tell what was going on.

I prefer watching next day video for tournaments, and thought the videos were excellent.

Great comment. The overlapping circles were distracting around the targets for 1, 16, and 17. That was my bogey. I will correct that next year on 1 and 16 for sure. 17's B pin may be difficult to move much to the right and still retain the visibility that helps to lure ace runs like Ricky's wonderful shot.

Did you find value in the bullseye (gold) 3-meter circles? Our goal in introducing these was to mark excellence in driving and to allow for the removal of the very short range putts from the putting statistics.

I'm currently watching the final video and realized I need to correct part of my comment. The drone flyovers during practice showed both baskets installed (understandably for practice rounds) and that stuck in my head as part of the tournament.

I see your point about 17, and you're right there may be nothing to do there. For what it's worth, I also found 18 distracting because the drives appear to be landing in the circle when they're playing the long pin. This may just be unavoidable.

I'm not the right person to ask about the 3M circle. I don't really care about the statistics, and have played enough to just know that those are gimmes. However, I understand what you're trying to accomplish. So, I don't personally see the value, but I can see that there is value there.

I also really enjoyed watching Eagle play the course the way he did. It seems like some of the changes you made this way allowed for bigger, more aggressive shots. I think that was a good thing.

I am, however, genuinely interested in what the perceived value is of live streaming is.
The value (to you) is a captive audience of your most dedicated fans engaged for HOURS at a time. This kind of audience engagement is the stuff advertisers dream about - even if it is a small niche audience.

The value to the audience is watching the drama unfold in real-time with other dedicated fans... something VOD content absolutely fails to provide.

I think charging $10 is reasonable and I'd certainly pay to avoid a debacle like we've seen this year. But your audience will be ~half of what it would be if the stream was free and being supported by ads. PPV just doesn't seem to work in the streaming world (UFC aside).

I see the value of the 3m circle. Aesthetically I didn't really like it. Not sure what to do about that, but I did like the more accurate putting statistics.

I also would pre reg to watch usdgc and worlds. ESPECIALLY like the online pro shop idea. If I could pick one kinda exclusive disc that would be so sweet.

I usually buy something cool from papa bear and his son when he gets home from usdgc anyways.

I have never understood the importance of all of the metrixes, 3m circle, bullseye and stats.Circus golf at its finest in my opinion At the end of the round there is only one number that matters. Who does all of the stats help? the viewer, the player, the td?

No cost to the viewer live stream. Period.

Quality live stream already exists at all of the other major events and should be the norm at the USDGC.

Harold:

Some of the ridiculous feedback posted previously on these boards include: changing venues for the USDGC from Winthrop, removing Major status from the USDGC, and the lack of live streaming being a step backward.

None of this feedback is relevant. It seems some of the hardcore fans just want to see mashes in wide open fairways, and any use of ropes is sacrilege; or they're just plants from the PDGA. ;) Some of those who were defending the Ledgestone a while back are now criticizing the USDGC, so take all that with a grain of salt. I personally don't believe that just because your course doesn't jive with the ratings system is a valid criticism of anything.

I also doubt very much that paying for live-streaming would be successful; disc golfers are notoriously cheap, and most casual fans are busy playing disc golf on weekends, despite the few randos who claim to watch every moment of live coverage.

And, to me, the USDGC is analogous to the US Open in ball golf, in that it is a mental test as much as a physical one. Keep doing what you're doing.

As for actual comments to this year's layout: I thought the triple mando on 15 was unnecessary. But I'm also not a fan of Hole 7, but understand its iconic nature at this point. The tightening of the ropes on Hole 3 and 9 was very narrow, but I'm sure you look at the metrics to see how that played out. 888s new tee was interesting; it didn't seem to help anyone play the hole any better, when it sure looked like it should have - again, I know you'll look at it.

I'm not a stats guy, but understand the need for building a stats model, so the bullseye is good idea to get a truer measure of putting. What I didn't like were the markers used, they distracted me visually, and I feel like they could stop or deflect a slow rollaway enough to alter the game - I may be wrong about that. A painted red circle would suffice, IMO.

For future hurricanes, perhaps a plan needs to be put in place for doubling up rounds. Getting 92 players (86 after withdrawals, I believe) through 2 rounds in waning Fall light seems impossible, but might be something to be looked at.

Other than that, thank you to you and your team for building the USDGC into the tournament it is. I enjoy it every year, ropes, weather, and lack of live streaming or official ratings, be damned.:p

I see the value of the 3m circle. Aesthetically I didn't really like it.

I don't mind the painted circle, but I don't like the stakes in the ground that a disc could hit, causing it to roll. One day that's going to happen to a player, and then the fireworks will begin.

(side note: Twould be 'exciting' if it were Nikko's disc that hit one of those stakes and rolled away, but I wouldn't wish that on Nikko nor any other player.)
