[Innova] Innova Shryke

Most of my Prodigy discs are X-outs. Infinite had a sale and I went crazy on it. But I digress... yes, the number on the rim is the plastic type.

I don't know a ton about Prodigy, but the few discs of theirs I have are nice. The plastic really is something like old CE. Its shinier and gummier than star, but definitely doesn't seem like champion either. Its durable and flies well.

The D3 is the closest thing I've thrown to a Shryke from a company other than Innova. I'd say those 2 discs are carrying the crown for distance right now from my standpoint. They aren't always the most accurate, but they damn sure are the longest consistently.

I have a D4 in 400 plastic and a D5 in 400g. The D5 has this crease/groove in the rim that I don't like; it's not the atrocity of the Groove or Monarch, but it's disturrrrbing. The D5 is understable.

The D4 flew better for me, but didn't really 'wow' me. It's also a very wide-rimmed disc, befitting its speed 13 classification. I haven't tried a D3, but I suspect it would be a bit overstable for me. If Prodigy will just come out with some Speed 11 class discs, I'll get interested in them again. The M3, M4, F3, and F5 are all good discs.

I've only thrown 2 Prodigy discs, D2 and D3. D2 is more stable than the D3, similar to a Boss or Nuke. The D3 is the real deal for sheer distance though. Neck and neck with any Shryke I put it up against.

Isn't that exactly what the X series is? I should go look at the PDGA specs again, but I thought they had 2.1 cm rims (so roughly speed 11). The D series is mostly 2.3cm although I think one of them is 2.4, could have been the D4 actually. It makes sense for them to have something half way between the H series and D series which I think is where the X series comes in.

I agree that it would make sense for the X series to be between the H and D. I'll have to check on the X discs; they're listed on the Marshal Street Flight Guide as being Speed 13... not that the MSFG is the Bible or anything, of course. I'll check the Xs out...

So I checked the PDGA approved discs and the X series varies between 2.2 cm and 2.3 cm rim widths. I don't know how I got the idea that they were 2.1 cm, but they're not. They're still slightly slower than the D series overall, but not enough to bag both. The D1-4 are all 2.3 cm and the D5-6 are 2.4 cm. Here are the rim widths on the X series from the PDGA specs:

X1: 2.3
X3: 2.2
X4: 2.3
X5: 2.2
X6: 2.2

Another difference to keep in mind is that the D series all have 1.2 cm rim depths and the X series other than the X1 have 1.1 cm rim depths so they're slightly shallower. The overall height on the D series is also a bit taller than the X series. So the X series look to be a bit lower profile than the D series. If you have small hands, I'm guessing the slightly thinner rims and lower profiles will make the X series more comfortable in your hands than the D series.

I like "shallower", so maybe the X discs would be better for me than the D discs. But I'm about settled that the Tern is my max-d disc.

Anyhoo, the Shryke/Prodigy D discs are an interesting comparison for those with the arms to throw them.

Yeah. Seriously. For me the Shryke and D3 fly EXACTLY the same. They look the same too. You could put a Shryke stamp on a D3 and remove all the Prodigy writing from the underside of the disc and no one would ever know it wasn't really a Shryke.

Picked up a couple of color glow champ shrykes and found they're a bit more stable than the star. Nice for shots that have room to move or downwind shots. Starting to get used to it.

whats the consensus on sidearming/forehanding shrykes? is the rim depth similar to a destroyer/wraith?

i gave up throwing terns/ddx because i couldn't sidearm them consistently because of their shallower rim. i could backhand for glorious max distance with them, but sidearms were iffy.

i really really miss the max backhand distance of my terns, the kind of distance where when it open and you don't have to worry about OB you can just let the sucker fly kind of distance and I want to have that again with backhand and sidearm (since my sidearm is actually getting pretty good now).

especially when its a open hole but there's a slant/hill and a sidearm flex shot would benefit from a side arm flex shot using the slant to get more distance.

I don't throw much forehand, but based upon the posts in these threads, and seeing some pros (men and women) throw Shryke forehands, I'd guess that you will like the Shryke for forehands.

Yeah, only way to know is to go try it. I've never tossed a Shryke sidearm either. I backhand them over 400' easily, so I really see little reason to trifle with an inferior sidearm shot.

If/when I throw sidearm its generally a very overstable driver around a tree or other hazard where I want a strong right finish.

I don't mind throwing understable stuff forehand, but as uncomfortable as the shallower grip of the tern is the shryke just feels awkward for me. I've always thought the shryke feels like a low plh weirdly cooled top destroyer. Feels ok backhand but just weird forehand. It might be a hair slower than what you're looking for but the new gummy blend pro wraiths would probably give you the rim depth you want with a little flippiness. Or if you want all out max d maybe try a mid 160s gstar colossus.

I love a good Z Crank. Anyone know if Champion Shryke would be a good Innova substitute?

Forehanding Shryke's is my go-to distance choice, as long as there isn't a strong headwind. The rim feels just a smidge shallower than a destroyer, but nothing like a Tern - to me, that's what turned me off of Terns is the shallow rim. The Shryke grip/release feels very comfortable.

Crank and Shryke are fairly similar. The Crank might be a tiny bit more stable than the Crank. The Shryke is a little faster with better glide though. I get better distance out of the Shryke.

The Crank is probably the closest thing Discraft has to the Shryke though.

I've been messing with the shryke and I am not sure if I am 100% sold yet. I don't get to play as much as I like to these days so I am trying to find a disc I can throw off the shelf how I want it to fly and the shryke was attempting to fill the beat destroyer slot. It cannot handle a hint of wind, but if definitely goes in a tailwind or calm conditions. I am having a little consistency issues with it which is making me want to stick with the beat destroyers, but I am going to keep working with it. I have been using a couple star, but I just put a champ in the bag so we will see how that goes. Really easy to put out over 400 though, I will give it that.
