2017 Aussie Open DGWT Event Discussion

SD86;3131343 Ian and Terry might've said what disc it was if they had known said:
I think Terry is pretty neutral on these things, but Ian shills for whoever pays him at the moment, which is mostly Innova at this point.

Wow, horrible way to lose.

Gotta love the Lat sponsored player beating the top dogs for Innova/Discmania at their first marquee event of the season.

Lat should give Ricky a huge bonus.

the weird thing is.... when ricky was doing the commentary on back nine of round three he [ricky] never mentions the specific molds of his discs he throws... he just will say "i threw a fairway driver here" "yeah i threw a midrange.."

ricky even mentions the specific innova molds things like: "eagle threw a gator there, nice shot"

barsby on the other hand seemed to know what ricky, paul, eagle was throwing and specifically would mention things like: "yeah ricky probably threw his harp there" "i bet ricky threw his compass there" "looks like mcbeth went side arm with his destroyer"

i've noticed that ricky did that in commentary for spin TV in the past too, where he'll just vaguely say he threw a putter, or fairway driver, when it would've been a lot more informative (and sponsor friendly) if he would mention the specific discs: "I threw my harp, which is an overstable slow approach disc on sidearm there"

Talking over your announcing partner is one of the worst things you can do in sports broadcasting-and Barsby seemed to be doing it on purpose near the end. How would you like that kind of treatment. lyle?

Avery talked over Barsby a couple of times, as well. If they work that stuff out, especially with more opportunities to work together on commentating, IMHO they could be a great commentating duo.

In many of his videos, Ian has been good about telling us what disc is being thrown, or getting his guest commentator to do so, if he/they know what disc was thrown. Of course, they have to know in order to tell us, and sometimes they don't know. I'm appreciative when they do know and do tell us...

I think the two need to get punching gloves and go at it. That would sure beat their competitive commentary.

And by the way where and the hell is the finals vid?

I would have to say the media coverage on the Aussie Open falls short of the show the players put on down under. Not many mistakes made by the top card. Unbelievable good disc golf. I must say also that the media coverage of the top DG events has been improving over the years. However, one can see its still in its infant stage. From afar the DGWT put on a great show in my eyes. I also know everyone evolved, including the players, worked very hard for little money. Just wanted to say thanks.

Except, that you had it backwards. The times I heard it Barsby was speaking, he spoke into what Avery thought was a break point, and Avery rode over him.

Whoops, sorry for repeating SD.

I'm not sure where the Ian shills comment came from? Ian is good because he a) has good rythm, b) wants his cohost to succeed. That means he asks them questions about shots, the course and co_players instead of trying to do it himself. He's not trying to be the expert, he's trying to help the expert. Terry does the same.

Ian's main sponsor is Innova, and those are the players and discs that get the most push on the videos-that should be obvious to anyone paying attention to such things. . His best and most popular videos, such as Battle of the Eras, would not have happened without the cooperation of the Innova crew. So it makes perfect sense that his sponsors products get the most mention.

I agree with your comments on Ian as a host. He has some unique qualities that really seem to resonate with the current disc golf audience. My original comment was in response to the following...

"Ian and Terry might've said what disc it was if they had known, as they're neutral observers in that way."

If Ian were working for a neutral network and he emphasized one companies products over another, I'd have a problem with it. But he's and independent contractor making business decisions-so I take it for what it is. It's not a criticism-just an observation.

I don't disagree with you that Ian has had a number of his videos sponsored by Innova, and he's gotten some amazing support from the likes of Paul McBeth and Nate Sexton, among others. However, and especially while watching tournament videos, I have heard him name a disc someone is throwing, and it's not an Innova disc. So Ian is very fair and good about naming the disc if he knows what he is (or getting his co-commentator to do so). regardless of its brand.

To build on SDs comment, the fact that Innova pays Ian to do promotional vids does not mean he's a shill, it means he's a businessman. Unless we're communists now? No profit! You must work for the greater good. As SD pointed out, in Ian's regular tournament coverage he's very equitable.

BTW - by your measure Golden, the only purpose of the NFL is as a shill for bad beer. Oh wait... Okay, it's not the NFL, it's FOX or whatever network currently carries those games.

BTW, if I'm Innova, I'm thinking I've gotten great value from Ian. His stuff is awesome. Remember, I'm a social democrat, and I can quite appreciate this investment without thinking that Ian is a shill or some lackey.
