Nate Sexton boycotting DGPT?

I have chosen to prioritize the PDGA National Tour over the DGPT in 2019.
Read on if you would like to know why.

The 2019 disc golf season finds my family and I in a bit of a transitional time. My wife is in her 4th year of medical school, set to graduate in May and we are living in AirB&Bs for the first 5 months of the year in different cities in North Carolina as she finishes her last few rotations. We don't even know what state we will be living in after graduation until mid March when medical students match into their residency programs. All this is to say that my obligations as a father necessitated a choice be made between competing disc golf tours (DGPT and NT) this season.
The DGPT is its own entity with its own business interests and they made the decision to take their media in house for 2019 and beyond. This is absolutely their right, and while I don't personally like it, it is not my choice to make and my opinion is clearly biased. Anyone who follows disc golf knows that I have worked closely with Jomez Pro and Central Coast Disc Golf over the years and I feel that I, perhaps more than anyone, owe both of those companies a lot for the platform they have given me. The relationship I have with those companies is very important to me and to my brand as a professional athlete. That is why I have decided to play events where I can continue to collaborate with them and bring you as much Big Sexy commentary and Champs vs. Chumps as I can!

This is not a boycott, and I want to make it clear that I wish the DGPT the best in their efforts to overhaul their media offerings in 2019. I am considering playing in both the Portland Open (my home state) and The Ledgestone Insurance Open (as defending champion) but I have not made a final decision on either of those events.
Lastly, I want to apologize to my fans in DGPT cities, I hope to see you again soon (2020 hopefully!) Thanks for reading, now lets get going on what is going to be an amazing season of disc golf.

I think the entire boycott thing is a lot of hot air about nothing. Below is the "national pro schedule". Central Coast commitments are in blue and DGPT are bolded. Jomez has the opportunity to film the rest. I don't see where they would have been able to cover many more events than they have the opportunity to. DGPT's attempt to bring the video coverage in house seems like a logical and needed step if this is how we are going to see the sport grow. I don't see where Jomez has been slighted in the least. Perhaps the whole thing was handled unprofessionally, but I don't have that kind of inside knowledge, nor do I think it should matter to anyone but Jomez and Dodge.

Sorry, no bold and no time to edit, but the DGPT are marked. Dodge's folly only seems to have worked to bring disc golf more coverage. IMO.

Ru4por...

I do think that Jomez was slighted and that they would have been at all the DGPT events if allowed to film (I have no idea why you think that Jomez couldn't have done those events). I would bet whatever amount you want that they would have been there, as they were last year.

Nate obviously feels the same to whatever degree, a guy who knows a lot more than we do.

Not that hard to figure out. Dodge is out just for the tour and has slighted those who helped the tour succeed.

We'll see where it leads.

Interesting. Sexton is quite right that he owes a lot of his exposure to Jomez and Central Coast. He is such an outstanding player that he was becoming well-known anyway, but they for sure helped him become a superstar, or what passes for a superstar in our beloved sport. Steve Dodge has long touted the need to get more eyeballs on the sport of disc golf, and I feel like this move by DGPT is an efficient way for him to do just that. I don't think its either good or bad for both parties.

I don't think that Steve is primarily interested in increasing views of the sport (he is interested in financing the tour), if so, then Jomez is the biggest way to get them, see Jomez subscriber number. And certainly, it would be presumptuous of Steve to say that he wants to drive numbers up by pushing the best coverage out to other events.

And I appreciate your opinion....yet I am not going to bet you anything that anyone might have done something????

Jomez, nor Central Coast was owed nothing by Dodge or DGPT. Their contribution to the success of this tour is debatable. Dodge should be out for nothing except DGPT, it is his business and livelihood. He should only be interested in making money, that is what a business is for. He owes disc golf, Jomez or you anything. In the process of doing this, we the disc golf public are going to see more coverage.

Does anyone know how many pro tour tournaments, off the list below, Jomez covered last season?

Good on Nate. Professional and thoughtful, as always. The 4th year of med school thing (especially with a daughter) is plenty of explanation for me. Good luck to the Sexton family as she goes through the residency application process. Speaking of which, I bet 3rd year has been enough of a struggle...

I wonder how many MDs/DOs or spouses play disc golf? Can't be that rare but I haven't heard of many...

Financing and making the tour a success, helps disc golf.

Who cares if it's mutually beneficial for him and the tour brand?

A successful pro tour, for some, is the way to increase views of the sport.

Including outside views.

Jomez is by far the best, but their subscriber numbers are from people who already disc golf and exist inside our tiny bubble.

Ever hear of Dr. Rick Voakes? (I think his wife is also a doctor, and she played (plays).

Edit: No, she is not a doctor, but definitely played.

My daughter is in her 3rd yr of med school. She is busy all of the time. She doesn't have a husband or a child. Obviously it can be done, but going on tour during this time would be next to impossible.

The folly in your argument is the notion that most viewers are only watching Jomez because it's Jomez and not because they've been showing the top cards at the top events in the game.

Honest question...you have one hour to watch disc golf coverage and a choice between final round lead card coverage of elite tournament X featuring McBeth, Wysocki, Barsby, and Ulibarri or final round third card coverage of the same event featuring Lizotte, McMahon, Heimberg, and Melton. You don't know the results yet. Which one will you watch? Unless you're a superfan of one of the four on the third card, you're most likely picking the lead card, no? Without even considering which channel it's on.

Content drives viewership, not the provider.

He stated clearly that "This is not a boycott", yet you title your thread 'Nate Sexton boycotting DGPT?' Why turn this into some kind of battle to take sides on? Seems like you did all the guessing.

Eman is all about that clickbait title

Nate posted his full explanation after Eman made this thread. Nate's original post just said he wouldn't be playing DGPT events and more to come later.
