I have chosen to prioritize the PDGA National Tour over the DGPT in 2019.
Read on if you would like to know why.
The 2019 disc golf season finds my family and I in a bit of a transitional time. My wife is in her 4th year of medical school, set to graduate in May and we are living in AirB&Bs for the first 5 months of the year in different cities in North Carolina as she finishes her last few rotations. We don't even know what state we will be living in after graduation until mid March when medical students match into their residency programs. All this is to say that my obligations as a father necessitated a choice be made between competing disc golf tours (DGPT and NT) this season.
The DGPT is its own entity with its own business interests and they made the decision to take their media in house for 2019 and beyond. This is absolutely their right, and while I don't personally like it, it is not my choice to make and my opinion is clearly biased. Anyone who follows disc golf knows that I have worked closely with Jomez Pro and Central Coast Disc Golf over the years and I feel that I, perhaps more than anyone, owe both of those companies a lot for the platform they have given me. The relationship I have with those companies is very important to me and to my brand as a professional athlete. That is why I have decided to play events where I can continue to collaborate with them and bring you as much Big Sexy commentary and Champs vs. Chumps as I can!
This is not a boycott, and I want to make it clear that I wish the DGPT the best in their efforts to overhaul their media offerings in 2019. I am considering playing in both the Portland Open (my home state) and The Ledgestone Insurance Open (as defending champion) but I have not made a final decision on either of those events.
Lastly, I want to apologize to my fans in DGPT cities, I hope to see you again soon (2020 hopefully!) Thanks for reading, now lets get going on what is going to be an amazing season of disc golf.
