The Cubic Zirconia Club

I've noticed that on the top 50 list of vote getters, there are a lot of us. CZ members hold positions 6, 7, 13, 20, 23, 25, 26, 28, 33, 38, 43, 47, and 50. 13 of the 20 current CZ members are in the top 50.

On the courses played list, we hold only one of the top 50 spots (@Chained Evil in 27th)
Next year isn't likely going to be a big course bagging year for me, but I have my eye on both getting into the top 50 vote getters and getting to 100 reviews.

I have 3 reviews to get to after thanksgiving which will get me to 10 this year, and I'm hoping to at least get to double digits again next year.

Seems to fit the general pattern of the last five years or so: more votes/fewer uniques.

Best example is Chained Evil: almost 250 uniques on fewer than 1200 votes. Wow. "It was a different time."

Seems like the votes/uniques ratio has really changed over the years.

For those who haven't seen yet, how trusted reviewer status is determined changed a bit:
  1. Bronze Level:
    • Unique Voters: 20
    • Number of Reviews: 10
    • Vote Score: 100
  2. Silver Level:
    • Unique Voters: 35
    • Number of Reviews: 25
    • Vote Score: 200
  3. Gold Level:
    • Unique Voters: 90
    • Number of Reviews: 35
    • Vote Score: 350
  4. Diamond Level:
    • Unique Voters: 250
    • Number of Reviews: 60
    • Vote Score: 1000
Note: The Vote Score is calculated as the total number of positive votes minus the total number of negative votes. This calculation represents a change introduced with the new format, where previously, the focus was solely on the count of positive votes.

The big difference here obviously is the vote score, which has replaced the positive vote count barrier. Using my stats as an example, instead of my current 1,354 positive votes checking off the previous 1,000 vote barrier, my vote count is actually 1,342, subtracting my 12 negative votes from my positive votes.

This has altered certain member's TR statuses; for instance, some fringe bronze TRs who have 20 or 30 negative votes lost their status despite being within the old 40% ratio rule.

As for the CZ club, I personally don't see any reason to rethink our club - 1,000 positive votes is a mark only 73 reviewers have hit, diamond or cz. That being said, folks who have 250 uniques but some negative votes will have to go further than 1,000 votes to get diamond.

So I figure the CZ club moving forward can be for folks who 1. Have hit 1,000 positive votes, and 2. Do not have enough unique voters AND/OR a high enough vote score to achieve diamond.

WITH ALL OF THAT SAID, I PROPOSE INTRODUCING TWO NEW MEMBERS.

First, Innovadude. While Innovadude was a diamond reviewer before the site change, his vote score is at 765, resulting in him currently being a Gold TR. Since he has over 1,000 positive votes though, I vote we take him in. IF THE SITE DOESN'T WANT TO GRANT HIM THE DIAMOND HE PREVIOUSLY EARNED, I SAY WE GIVE HIM A HOME.

Secondly, Dave242. Dave's larger negative vote count long kept him from achieving diamond reviewer status. Now that we use vote count, however, Dave242's 2,067 positive votes and 1,735 negatives result in a vote score of 332, good enough for a Silver TR status. I recommend Dave242 to the CZ club. He may have played it fast and loose with his reviews, BUT WE'RE A FAST AND LOOSE CROWD.

This also explains Zman44 not being a Diamond yet, as he's also under the 1,000 vote score.

I second the motion.

looks like motion carries, I support it fully.

With the new information learned in regards to how TR status is earned, I have updated this list for the month of December.

For anyone interested, I changed the way I chose to sort the list due to the new information. The newest month is sorted first by the Voter Score metric, then anyone who is above a 1,000 voter score is then sorted by Unique Upvotes. I also took some liberties with how I labeled Innovadude on the list.

OR Do we lobby Dev/Greens to go back to the original way?

No, I rather like the change.

LOL I suppose that's fair. :)

Innovadude is a Diamond TR again, therefore booting him from the CZ club. I'll appreciate all of the memories we had together in this club.

But AT LEAST WE STILL HAVE DAVE242!

DAVE! DAVE! DAVE! DAVE!

I'll get the formalities on the site tonight.

Pretty sure you all will be promoted to diamond long before Dave gets enough thumbs up to outweigh all those down votes.

I think it's a fine change too TBH. The uniques will still be the barrier to entry for Diamond for all of us. The vote score will just make sure that there are way more upvotes than downvotes in the process.

I agree.

Let me see...4,167 - 37 = I'm OK in this department...

You know, I would have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. The old system had an all or nothing approach where your status as nobody or Diamond reviewer could be just one vote away. One of the things I like about this vote count is it gives someone in a high-vote count position the opportunity to be a TR while also factoring in some tempering community input.

For someone like Dave who has had mixed reception, I think Silver is fair. You can weight his reviews a little more heavily, but recognize that his approach isn't as universally trusted as, say, King Valk.

Not that I'm hating on Dave, and he absolutely does not deserve the mean-spirited gossip that he has gotten at times. He does a great job of telling why he rates how he rated…when he writes a complete review. Unfortunately, a very good chunk of his output is nothing more than a drive-by UDisc rating with his particular personal categories.

But at the end of the day this is all arbitrary, so - a toast to Dave if you will!

I just think it's funny that he's a TR after years of occasional mentions of his vote situation and that he would never be a TR, and then one rule change and poof, here we are with Dave242 as a TR, even if it's a lower tier. It's something none of us imagined we'd see happen, plus it's something other than the diamond or nothing options like you mentioned.

I agree he gets more negative press than he deserves, and I'd also agree on what you said about his reviews. I think he's a fun and unique example of what the new vote count can do for a reviewer that doesn't have a good or perhaps even mediocre positive/negative ratio, but has the quantity to overcome it. Most other changes, I imagine, are primarily fringe bronze TRs losing their TR status.

Dave got way more negative attention back when he was dropping all of those "reviews" than he's getting now. He's one of those people (pretty sure Olorin is another) that was reviewing/rating courses pre-dgcr and then transferred those reviews/ratings over here once they discovered dgcr.

I always got the impression that Dave had a spreadsheet that he converted into a few hundred "reviews". I keep using quotes, because he was rating courses more than he was reviewing them. He had a clear methodology and took his process very seriously, but he wasn't exactly following timg's reviewing guidelines. With that said, once you got to know his preferences, his ratings were sort of helpful. Especially if you shared those preferences.

Eventually he started adding details outside of his rating rubric and his reviews became truly useful. His contributions to the site weren't limited to cut and paste reviews though. He'd often pop into forum course discussions with a different and insightful perspective. I'm glad he's getting some belated recognition.

For Immediate Release:

Welcome to the Cubic Zirconia Club @Dave242!

Dave enters the club under the new format of TR rules, where there are no more disqualifying downvote percentages, only a simple subtraction equation to determine your level (uniques levels still apply).

The CZ Club qualifications have been updated to reflect the change: 1,000 upvotes, but not yet 250 uniques or a vote score of 1,000 or greater. This change officially confirms @ZMan44 as a CZ member.

Two more notes:

1) While he was only with us under the newly confirmed rules for a few hours, thanks for joining us in the CZ Club @Innovadude.

2) Apparently Tyler is now the CZ Hype Man. I vote we put some of next year's budget aside for a mascot costume for him.
