Starting in KS, then MO, IA, and NE. Here is my first draft of a 3-day trip. Not interested in a lot of courses in KS since my group if from here and we can play the courses most anytime. If you are familiar with these areas let me know if you think the route is ok. Should I play them in a different order (travel time is the most important thing)? Any courses I've left out that need to be included? Any courses that should be trimmed off the list?

Day 1

Looks pretty awesome to me. That day in Iowa is going to wipe you out. Hopefully it isn't 95 when you're playing... Pickard in particular is wide open... not much shade to be found. I guess you'll be getting it out of the way early.

I'm anxious to see what you have to say about the Omaha and Lincoln course, I'll probably try to get there next time I drive down to Kansas.

Nice agenda with some really good courses picked out. I do have a few bits of advice:

Day 1: If you don't get to K.C. much and want to play the best it has to offer, make sure to hit Water Works but you might want to hit Swope instead of Rosedale. It's just a more interesting/challenging course. (Most cities would kill for the Water Works/Swope DG combo.)

Day 2: Having played all 5 of those great courses, and even being kind of a road trip maniac myself (216 courses down), I must say that this day's plan is pretty close to physically impossible. Here's what I would do, if you still want to keep it really ambitious: Cut out Big Creek (it's way outside of town and full of narrow tunnels and poison ivy), and play the other four in this order: Pickard, Ewing, Grandview, Walnut Ridge. That's a more natural flow as you travel through Des Moines and on your way toward Omaha. If you have to cut another one, cut Grandview.

Day 3: I don't know the first two small-towners you mentioned, but Treasure Cove is awesome and I'm glad it's on your list. But I would highly recommend Seymour Smith in Omaha instead of Max Roper in Lincoln. SS is a great and memorable 18 with nice diversity and elevation (but Roper's good too!).

Hope this helps! Have a blast!

Yeah if you try your day 2, you will be exhausted. Especially if its in the 90s again.

Good thoughts here, but I believe he said in another thread that he's already played Waterworks before.

I wish I'd have played Ewing instead of Grandview... oh well, I'll get back there again someday.

Very helpful, thank you. I believe we will probably alter the course to your recommendations. I have played Waterworks (last weekend) and definitely want to hit it again, fantastic course. Will gladly swap out Rosedale for Swope.. I've played Rosedale 3 times and wouldn't mind seeing something I haven't played (Swope).

I agree with day 2, I was planning on cutting out one of those courses just wasn't sure which one to cut out. I'll have to give day 3 some more thought so we can get in SS.

Perfect advice.

Definitely work on safe, straight shots if you haven't figured out your unintentional anhyzer stuff yet. Power down with slower discs if you have to. Pickard and Walnut Ridge are difficult and have some wooded holes.

There is some concern with the group that Swope Park is in a really bad part of town. Any reason to be concerned?

Swope is a huge park. I've never been worried playing there. However, one time when I was there a bunch of guys were freaked becasue there had been a body found that morning near the course. Take it for what it's worth. The neighborhood around Rosedale seems more run-down and dicey that what you will see going to Swope.

My concern is that I always found Swope to be boring. A lot of the course wagon-wheels around a center spot. So you shoot down the hill , then back up the hilll. Down the hill , then back up the hilll. Lather, rinse, repeat. I've never thought Swope was anything special and have always found Rosedale to be more challenging and interesting. That being said, both parks have a lot of pin placements. So both can be more or less challenging on a given day based on the pins. So...it's kind of a crap shoot.

I got to thinking about this, and I approached it as a Swope VS Rosedale question. If I was going to KC and could play two courses, it would be Waterworks and Cliff Drive. The front nine at Cliff Drive is some of my favorite golf. However, if you were worried about the neighborhood around Swope, Cliff Drive might not be a good option for you. It kinda made me think twice about leaving my car.

Unless you plan on starting at sunrise in Indianola, or play short tees only, you are so not going to finish before sunset. Those first four courses are monsters. Grandview, being the non-monster of the bunch is popular with the casuals, so I'd hit it early, right after Ewing.

Hmmm.. won't allow me to modify the original post.
Removed Rosedale from Day 1, may substitute in Cliff Drive or Swope, more likely we'll keep this day light at 3 courses since there will be most of the travel on this day. Day 2 - removed big creek. Day 3 - removed the Lincoln course, may add in another course near Omaha.
