I'll believe Facebook is dead when I see activity back on local discussion forums again. And I'd welcome that in a heartbeat. All the forums were all in one place, categorized by subject, and I didn't have to join 12 different groups to get the same information.

LOL Young people are not using Facebook. I have a HS class with 9th graders - 0 of them are on FB, about 30% on twitter, 75% on Instagram and 100% on Snapchat.

Old people use facebook, it's not growing with young people that's for sure

I would agree on facebook. No credibility because I have refused to become a member of online social media. Even though this may count.

Evolution my friend. Facebook will get replaced by the same technology that made it.

LOL what a terrible article. As others have said, I think it's a decline in FB Groups. I hate FB but I continue to use it because it is still really good for my store. (I rarely use groups though. It's annoying trying to sell in there)

As a store owner, I can just show sales numbers and trends that completely disprove the fake title of the article. Yes, my inventory has grown a ton along with my name, which equates to more sales, but that growth is due to a huge gain in demand here too.

...

Because you are experiencing growth does not mean other retailers are. Let's talk to Kmart and Sears.

Having said that , I agree the article points to a decline in interest on Facebook. Foghorn Leghorn once said "You gotta be a magician to keep a kid's attention more'n two minutes nowadays. "

Another thing to consider is how many schools have added disc golf baskets to their playgrounds and have added it as part of their gym classes. It's happening around here and those kids are getting their parents playing too. You can see the impact on the courses with more parents playing with their kids.

Glide Disc Golf in Madison just posted they're having their best year yet, and the local Dunham's has expanded their line of discs, bags, etc. quite a bit. It's clearly on an uptrend around here, no question.

Participation is growing in my area but the lack of new quality courses and lack of funding is more of a problem. The local club I belong to refuse to have members with social and financial resources involved when discussing new courses. Leadership over promises and under delivers in addition to alienating members with relationships with decision makers within and outside of the sport. Reminds me of the old guy in Vegas Vacation who finally wins in the casino after numerous years of playing and drops dead immediately. "Every need got an ego to feed"

Ah say, ah say, you just gotta respect a man that quotes Foghorn Leghorn. :hfive:

Using Facebook groups is a problematic means of looking at this. An abandoned disc golf group doesnt mean that the players are gone. Ive seen with FB groups I'm in (not necessarily disc golf) that a not-so-smooth leadership transition can leave a FB group abandoned, as the new powers that be don't have control over the old one. I've seen this with a number of church organizations, where a second group was made to replace the old one.

There's also what's happened locally where I'm at. Cleburne Disc Golf Group was an active group. The smaller town next to Cleburne, Keene, got some courses in, and a group was made there. Over time, everyone has moved over to the Keene group and left Cleburne largely abandoned. Keene has far more members now, and probably 90% of the Cleburne group members are in the Keene group. So we haven't had less players here. In fact, we have far more. But the older group members transitioned to a new group, and the older page isn't doing much now.

Ultiworld's disc golf coverage has been terrific.

Sadly, this article wasn't anywhere near up to that standard. Not because it was an opinion piece, or an opinion that is an affront to some disc golfers, but simply because the logic is so flawed.

This is how I feel. I'm ok with Ultiworld, but this is so illogical it's difficult to comprehend.

brb, gonna extrapolate the growth of the internet from this data

lol

Seriously, what was the author thinking? Soooo many variables not accounted for.. so many sources of data, with significantly higher correlation to growth, ignored.

Perhaps they use this same methodology to comprise their player rankings. It would explain a lot.

If Platebee had a Facebook profile, it would completely reverse all the trends the author has seen.

Something tells me the original article was written as click bait to get social media stirred up. hmm...

Seems like this is the consensus, but courses are more crowded than ever around here. A lot of the same old guys playing in league and club events but as a whole DG is betting bigger.

Heck, I've taken 7 new players to the course myself in the last few months and a lot of them are still playing.(with their new base plastic mids I gave them for the most part).
