Does anyone know if the Freedom Center disc golf course is open to the public yet? This is a biscoe design, and it sounds fantastic from everything I have heard.

The web site says there is an 18-hole course and a 9-hole course on site.
http://www.freedomcenter.us/FCSite/discgolf.htm

I may be heading down that way on Saturday and I would love to give the course a spin, if it is open. Anyone?

LoCo facebook / webpage would probably be the best source of information.
The latest I know is:
1) Course is open
2) Cost $5 for non-LoCo members
3) Tees transitioning from natural to concrete
4) LoCos would probably encourage you to play in their Ice Bowl at Franklin instead! :)

Wow

I live in Poolesville and have played Franklin Park many times but didn't even know this existed. I was in LoCo briefly but it's too far from me for weekly play and I have other good courses (Seneca, Darnestown, Ditto Farms, Woodsboro) that are easier to access. I hope that when they feel it is "ready" it will get added to DGCR. Steve Ganz of LoCo is a great guy.

Thank you swatso. I did not realize the Franklin Ice Bowl was this weekend.

LoCo page says the Freedom Center course is "coming soon!" but it looks like baskets and some pads are in. I'll probably check it out.

Freedom Center had a quasi-inaugral event last May for LoCo members, so it is quite playable.

The main course does have 18 baskets, and I think two tee positions per hole. Hole 2 has a ~ 250' water carry with no real bailout area, so, depending upon how far you consistently throw, be prepared.

There is also a 9-basket beginner course.

I think LoCo was waiting for completed teepads and/or signage and/or whatever before placing it on DGCR.

Also, this is located on a private, faith-based camp, so obeying the restrictions regarding, well, you know, are essential, or the course could be retracted.

And the ice bowl is full, but there is a wait list! :)

Course is going to wind up being called Clarks Run Disc Golf Course at Freedom Center after the stream running through it. Tees are in process. I'm not sure it is actually open to the public without a LOCO member escort yet- double check that with LOCO. Only 2 tee positions on a few holes at this point with more to come. Hole 2 has a drop zone- the play will be throw 3 from there if you don't want to play the water carry- signage will help with that issue. When complete Clarks Run will be among the 2-3 best completely wooded courses in Virginia- possibly the best. The LOCO club is doing a fantastic job of working through the long process of putting this thing in and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with them on it.

Thank you very much. I'll probably do a Winchester run this weekend (Sherando, Rockland, Signal View - already played Jim Barnett a couple of times).

That will leave Clarks Run Disc Golf Course at Freedom Center, Franklin Park, and Hayco for another weekend day trip. That should give me time to figure out who to contact at LoCo disc golf, etc.

Thanks again!

Sherando has their Ice Bowl Sunday. I think it's $20 + 2 cans of food if you decide to play.

Send an email to [email protected] when you want to hit up Clark Run and we'll try to have someone meet up with you. As stated earlier the course isn't officially open yet and is technically only open to LoCo club members and their guests. Thanks!

Thanks for the info! Supposed to rain Sunday so I'm aiming for Saturday.

Bummer

Bummer. I thought about going Saturday but think I'll hold off until the course is officially open. Rockland is a lot of fun; I haven't been to Signal View since they expanded to 18.

Signal View was an awesome nine, but only a decent eighteen, i.e. the additional holes are inferior to the original holes.
And while Rockland is quite good, I think most will find Freedom Center to be even better.

Thanks, I got that impression from reading reviews. Are the original 9 holes still part of the course, and if so, do you know which holes are original?

Oh I absolutely expect you are right, and I can't wait to play Freedom Center.

I'm just trying to bag some new courses efficiently. Freedom Center, Hayco, and Franklin Park would make a nice, compact day trip from Frederick so I prefer to find a weekend day when all three are available (Hayco is closed Saturday per the FB page).

Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

Thanks for the tips! Spelunkers sounds great, especially if I am travelling with the dog (drive-through).

I also noticed a place called Shaffer's BBQ & Market in Middletown. Anyone know if this is any good? I love trying local BBQ places.

Some time this year there will be one more top notch course in that area. Think a slightly smaller Hawk Hollow. Can't divulge exact location just yet.

...and second the Spelunkers recommendation. I also had a great gyro in Front Royal some years back but can't recall the name of the spot.

Biscoe you tease. :)

Smaller Hawk Hollow closer to home sounds fan-freaking-tastic. Can't wait to hear more when you are allowed to divulge.

A lunch break at Spelunkers is on the agenda for today, along with Sherando, Rockland, and maybe Signal View. Next good weekend forecast and I'll contact the LoCo folks about Freedom Center.

And, of course, I would love to hear updates about Freedom Center.

Thanks all!

Hayco is private, so you'll need to check when it is open.
Hayco's holes primarily break into two categories:
  • long, open, with ob lurking about
  • short, tight, with mostly small trees creating small windows
Most holes will make you deal with some type of mild-to-moderate elevation change.
And don't hit a horse!

Thanks! I played Sherando and Rockland but ran out of daylight before Signal View. Have to hit that another time.

Rockland was a blast and the recommendations for Spelunker's were spot on. Had a Cave Burger and vanilla custard with hot fudge. I'm not even a burger guy, but that was fantastic.

So far Rockland and Jim Barnett are my two favorites in that area.

I appreciate the description of Hayco. The reviews posted so far talk more about ambience than specifics, so it is nice to get a better feel for what the course will be like. I will keep an eye on the Hayco FB page and the weather to plan a trip there.

But I really want to play Freedom Center.
