Frisbee Golf

I explain to people a Frisbee is also a disc, it's just the most famous disc and hardly ever used for disc golf. Then if there's time I tell them calling all discs Frisbees is like calling all soft drinks Coke.

They get a funny look and say, "So this is a sport"?

The Spanish word for disc is "disco." And disc golf is "golf de disco." So I say I'm going to play "discos" to my wife all the time.

It only sounds weird to you gringos. :p

AFUERA!

From my experience people put it together that disc golf is frisbee golf. But they automatically think that they are just normal old frisbees. But for some reason they all think that they are just enhanced. They act like you can just toss them up in the air like a normal frisbee and they will go 300ft with no effort.
Its funny to see their reaction when they actually have one in their hand and throw it 50ft.

know you that their are still golf discs available to this day with the frisbee logo on them. it is possible to frolf although not many choose to do so. so to play disc golf does not mean that you are using a frisbee but you can indeed use a frisbee to play disc golf.

I think we need to distance ourselves from calling it frisbee golf, although i'll call it that sometimes if i'm talking to someone unfamiliar with it. As the sport continues to grow, eventually people are going to know exactly what you are talking about when you say "disc golf".

Disco golf might be an interesting concept. We could call it "Frolf" :p

1989: My Wham-O 165 is the best thing I could take with me to the newly-discovered Disc Golf course with baskets just installed in my hometown. I cannot throw this "Stingray" to save my life!

2012: I found a Wham-O "Turnover" Disc at a course, and it might be the worst plastic in a Golf Disc I've ever touched...

This was a valid discussion 20 years ago or more. Lots of people took their play-catch Frisbees and aimed them at telephone poles, trees, swingsets, etc., and kept score informally. It was a field day event when I was in elementary school in the late '70s/early '80s. True "Frisbee Golf." I worked for my local parks and recreation department in the late '80s when I was in high school and that was one of the most common activities with kids in the parks program. Talk about a fun job!

In the last ten or fifteen years, though? I honestly don't remember hearing a single person saying they've played it in that fashion. Seriously. When was the last time any of you grabbed an Ultimate Disc or play-catch Frisbee and played a made-up-on-the-spot object Frisbee Golf course like we used to do in 1982?

Food for thought: I've heard hard-core ultimate players correct me when I called their Discraft Ultrastar a "frisbee". They gave me the same line DGers say, "Its a disc, Frisbee is a brand name. Plus I prefer the Discraft disc over the Whamo one."

In the southwest, some people do just that. I remember a conversation with my then new sister-in-law.

"Do you want a Coke?"

"OK"

"What kind?"

"Uh Coke?"

"OK"

We still laugh about it.

Sorry for the drift. And I use Frisbee golf as the start of my explanation too.

All of my conversations, with someone unfamiliar with it, start out with "frisbee golf"
If its longer than just that, and I am going to explain it any.
I continue with its actually "disc golf" they are different ............

All my friends who don't play call it frolf because they heard most disc golfers don't like that term....that's just how they roll. :\

I'm still amazed that Wham-o isn't the leader in manufacturing golf discs! What happened there? Who ever their marketing specialist is they should be fired! Talk about missing the boat.
