Idlewild Review: Unfair?

Well, that's understandable. I don't recall the Dave 242 Idlewilde incident, but it sounds like maybe he was trying to prove a point?

People do get their undies in bunches over that stuff. Ultimately, what does it matter if Flip is #1 or #2 or even #10? Personal preference is going to play a huge part in whether a player enjoys one 5-disc course over another 5-disc course. The best this site can do is show everyone which courses have a general consensus of being 5-discs, 4-discs, etc. People need to make up their own minds from there...

Sorry about the bike Prerube - that's nuts. But you are proving a point here that I was goofing around with when I changed my rating to a 5.0.........that people take things ways too seriously around here. It changed the rating about 0.01 whopping rating points....just enough change the top 10 order.

It was a light-hearted joke/experiment that turned out better than I could have hoped. But I take my ratings very seriously.......as "seriously" as I take anything in DG which is a lot more about having serious fun than being serious like someone died (or my bike got stolen).

I stand by my 3.5 ("Very Good") rating as far as Idlewild's ability to draw me back to itself. I've played that course through twice paying very close attention to the things of importance to me.....and in my mind countless times. And, it lands on my ratings list right along with the other 3.5's - in its overall ability to draw me back to itself.

I'm looking forward to playing Flip City in a few days.....but I'm just as excited about playing the Mason County courses, Leviathan and Oshtemo all in one day (on top of about 7-8 hours of driving). Its gonna be a great day with a ton of great courses!

I didn't thumb down your Idlewild review, as far as I know I may play it and agree with you 100%. I don't have a problem with a 3.5 review. My issue was the change, you may have been trying to prove a point, but you know that when you changed the order new people came out of the woodwork to rate flip up and idlewild down, then flip took over and the same thing happened in reverse. so your point cause a series of garbage that you could not reverse by changing your review back to 3.5

How are you sure Dave 242 caused other people to write reviews? Could have been a coincidence. :\ I dunno, it seems harsh to say, "because you did this, all these other people did this in response," when we have no way of determining whether or not that was actually the case.

It happens every time the top 10 changes. It's been that way for 3 years. If you look many of the people who reviewed Flip or Idlewild reviewed it on their first day of being a member and never returned.

If I review Highbridge right now and bump it over Flip watch how fast a new 5 star review for flip and a 2.5 for Highbridge comes out.

I predict Dave will give Flip a good rating; but not a 5. I think the course suits his tastes. We'll see....may take a while though; as I'm still anxiously awaiting reviews from his trip to my area....

In January 2009 (1.5 years ago), I asked a Top Pro about Idlewild being in the Top 10. Here is the reply:

If you play only the first 3 holes.. I'll even give you the 4th, then it deserves to be on this list and high on this list, but there are at least 4 holes possibly 6 or more that are hideous. One in particular is very wooded -- one of those with random trees so there is no discernible path. Now throw in a stream (yes it is OB) that meanders back and forth from side to side at least 4 times. There is NO way to even visualize what you want your disc to do on this hole. The bad holes way outweigh the good ones. This course could be in the top, but it in no way is at this point.

Notes:
- This Top Pro understands, or has personal definitions of, "difficulty" vs. "stupidity".
- This Top Pro understands, or has personal definitions of, fairness and good hole design concepts.
- This Top Pro has played hundreds of courses of all levels.
- Idlewild certainly could have been improved since Jan 2009.

The point is, opinions vary. Yeah, a 0-star or 1-star is probably dumb. But to say "no way is it below a 4" is easily debatable.

I've never seen it, so I don't really care. The reaction-ism and defensiveness is just pretty hilarious.

The OP of this thread apparently doesn't realize that there are many good courses out there that have taken dings for being too hard. Idlewild seems to always get its own thread when that happens to it though. Some people don't like tough courses. It happened to a course you like. Tough ****.

No possible way without:
1. being completely wiped.
2. Playing sub-par
3. missing out on the nuances of each course.

I did all three Mason County Courses, and then Leviathan full pros only once in one day (and that was last year when I was there for a whole month), and it was a horrible draining experience. Just be patient and do them leisurely.
