Idlewild Review: Unfair?

No possible way without:
1. being completely wiped.
2. Playing sub-par
3. missing out on the nuances of each course.

I did all three Mason County Courses, and then Leviathan full pros only once in one day (and that was last year when I was there for a whole month), and it was a horrible draining experience. Just be patient and do them leisurely.

I disagree, my girlfriend and I had no issue playing the three Mason County courses and the longs at Leviathan with a late start and with daylight left over at the end of the day, and that was after over 100 holes the day before and another 100 holes the next day, it wasn't that tough at all.

I'll bet my new big wheel that Dave gives it a 4.0 or 4.5. He has no other choice but to live up to his eclectic non-conformist Obama-socialistic-right wing nut job ways.

Oh, come on......you can do better than that. A 4.0 is an A- in my book (90-92) and a 4.5 is an A (93-95). Pick a number grade.......if you want me to take your big wheel off your hands, you'll have to earn it!

Tom's just setting me up. Anything I rate a little bit seemingly quirky will be immediately attributed to being completely wiped and playing sub-par to a point that I was missing out on the nuances of each course. That is no way a "trusted" reviewer should act.

Yeah - I played 311 holes in 2 days (and 3 hours on Friday) last year (which included 2 tournament rounds at Lemon Lake Blue & Silver - slowed things down a ton). Granted there are some hills at the wMI courses, but I tend to agree with you. I am planning 7 courses that day.....but might drop the last one on the list time/energy permitting.

Here's the thing, I will hold this to any drive by reviewer who is blasting out ratings while blasting through courses...

Take them in, take them all in...otherwise you miss the number one reason why we play this game. No, it's not for some review site like this. No, it's not to say one has played a thousandzillion courses...it's for the love of the game, PERIOD. An oft neglected part of the sport that seems to get lost especially on this site.

Five courses in one day, and then to review them objectively by anyone, anywhere, is lud-i-crous.

...and to Mashnut, you and your girlfriend are more of a man than I am.

after 3 I think it affects my reviews. I have done it, but the third course's review may be affected by my energy level, frustration/excitement of the day, and other factors. If I did not take notes, I would never try to review 3, 5 is too much for me.

B-I-N-G-O
...but we have superhuman reviewers on this here site me thinks!

In January 2009 (1.5 years ago), I asked a Top Pro about Idlewild being in the Top 10.

Why not just say the "top pros name?" Look Idle has more reviews from trusted reviewers than any other course in the top ten and It has held its high rating over a long period of time. I just think people go there and are not prepared to take on the course so it can be frustating. I know anybody who plans a trip and reads reviews knows its hard, but you don't get it till you get there. In Daves review he said he felt like he was laying up all day, well if you don't have a forehand roller or over the top shots then yeah the smart play is to lay up. But that is your desicion, You dont get rewarded at Idlewild without risk.
What was the forum on here like a month ago talking about disc golf par vs ball golf par, well on many holes at Idlewild getting par is like getting par in ball golf. You dont go to many disc golf courses where you have legit par 4's and 5's you do here.

Guys from Paw Paw to KY prefer to throw little shots in the woods....guys on the East Coast love to throw big in the woods.....it's more a matter of taste. I won't knock it but I prefer whats in PA DE to what I experienced at Idlewild....I gave Idlewild a 4 despite how much I hated half of the course which speaks to how good the other holes were.

I agree Idle isnt gonna be everyones favorite course, but to say it doesnt belong in the top ten on this site is a false statement. If you look at Idles TR reviews its amount stars goes up (not by much.) Thats with opti's four which I believe is the lowest tr grade. There may be a day when it falls but for now it has earned its spot despite some of the beating it takes.

I am amazed at how much people defend Idlewild on here. Is it really so important that your course is in the top 10 list on an internet site? People disagree on what makes a good course, and depending on who has played/reviewed it, the score will fluctuate.

Also, there is a big difference between hard and tree-littered fairways. I've never played Idlewild, so I don't know what it has, but if there isn't a clear fairway odds are that its tree-littered, which is not a good thing to do to make a course harder in my opinion. Also, FH rollers and overhand shots shouldn't be required on any course to navigate the fairway.

My personal favorite course (rated at 4 stars for the longest time) got hit by a 2.5 and 3 disc review for being too difficult for them, even though the course was designed to be a challenge for gold level players. That kills the score when it brings the total number of reviews to 6, but it doesn't take away from my enjoyment while I'm playing it. I also didn't run to the course section to make a thread about how unfair it is that people have different tastes and opinions.

My main problem with Idlewild was that 4 of the holes you could not really drive off the tee, the 2 very average par 3s that seemed out of place on an epic course, and that on 6 of the greens long risky approaches seemed to reward luck due to the artificial and stream OOB that circled the greens......was it challenging YES.....did it refine my game YES...was it fair mmmmm relative term.... But when half the holes reward sissiness off the tee due to tight tree laden corridors that make abrupt turns or sissiness on approach due to the luck factor of the green areas...I had a tough time giving it a 4.5 or a 5.....I think fun and challenge can co-exist and I have played courses that are as challenging as Idlewild but way more fun......that being said I do think Idlewild has a certain addictive nature and I would play it regularly if I lived there...I just think they tried to combine big and epic with tight and technical on the same holes and the marriage IMHO doesnt work.

....I'm just one guy and I will admit that I loved holes 1,2,3,9,10,11,14,15,16, and 18....so 10 of the holes are amongst the best I have played and would fit in on the better courses I have played. I can't believe a 3.5 and a 4 are perceived as bad grades. I actually think the really inflated course in the Cinnci region is Mt Airy but thats more due to my more woodsy tastes.

To the groupies of the top 10, anything less than a 5 means you are dissing "their" course and obviously are a douche with a motive.:wall: Yet you must love the top ten just for the popcorn and *cough* healthy debate. The more I hear people describe Idlewild, the more that I think that I wouldn't give it a 5.

to the site veterans this will always be Flip city vs. Idlewild, but I bet the noobies are scratching their heads, why compare #1 to #4?

Yeah Im not a fan of Airy either. I thought I was done with this thread when it first came up then I got drew back in, I really wouldnt of commented until I read the top pro quotes that made it seem like the rating was inflated. I just wanted to state the TR stats because I feel they validate its rating. Really the thing about Idlewild is exactly what my Idlewild shirt says "Idlewild love it or hate it its that kinda course." On another not the ob that is marked throughout the course is really only played if its in a tourny thrown by Fred. Any other tourny the only ob is just the creek and pond. I could care less what ppl rate the course but dont bash the courses overall rating when it has enough reviews to give it a valid rating.

If a course has throw away holes, the remaining holes would have to be really incredible to make up for them in order to be a course that you wouldn't change anything. Unless you like connector or throw away holes. Maybe they are throw away holes because the rest are so amazing, just thinking out loud.

I think I remember 1 review saying it was kind of run down or just needed more TLC. As if Idlewild and Lincoln ridge receive all of the attention from the locals. I would still have to play it if I was already playing the other 2.

Yeah the trio makes for a good day with the fun course Lincoln the challenge idlewild and the open mt airy with the best dg shop ever onsite. It's a good day.
