here, for now
Would someone clarify what the term max weight refers to? I tried a search for it an came up empty. I was under the impression it referred to a particular disc's highest production approved weight. Is that not the definition?

Someone can probably quote the exact guidelines, but 'max weight' refers to the highest PDGA legal weight of a disc. This weight is relative to the disc's diameter (larger discs are allowed to weigh more).

Most drivers and smaller putters max out around 175g. Larger diameter discs (mostly midranges and some others) max out in the 180g range.

There are upper limits on the overall max weight and diameter as well.

Rule of thumb for most discs when people say max weight.
Drivers and putters ~ 175
Mids ~ 180

The 175-180 rule is a good one, you only ever see specially discs line Zephers and Condors in the 200 range unless it's a superclass disc.

A little history...

In the first days of the sport, Frisbee made glow discs that were used, well over 200 grams. There was concern of injuries caused by such weighted discs to other park users and would kill the sport in its infancy. The decision was made by the ADGA, Amateur Disc Golf Association, to lower the weights to the current standards.
