Moving to Michigan

Forgot to mention...More advice:

- Bell's Oberon.
- Your right hand with the palm facing up is a map of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Ann Arbor is near the base of the thumb about an inch up from your wrist. Learn this so that when you meet others from Michigan you can point to the appropriate spot on your hand (facing the correct way!) and say, "I'm from here."
- People from Michigan are called "Michiganders."
- Yoopers are Michiganders from the upper peninsula
- Yoopers often refer to those that live in the lower peninsula as "trolls" since they live, "below the bridge."
- 11/15 is as close to a state holiday as you can get without actually being a state holiday. Drive VERY CAREFULLY on the country roads on this day and the days immediately before and after it.
- Brake for deer - do not swerve.
- Casinos - lot's of 'em.
- Michiganders DO NOT have an accent.
- It's called pop. Do use Coke as a generic term for all things carbonated. If you ask for a Coke you will get a Coke.
- Goto the upper peninsula for vacation
- Ohio sucks

There...that about covers it. Can't think of anything else at the moment.

What's Bell's Oberon?

And what happens on 11/15?

Bell's makes some of the better beer beverages anywhere; and I would imagine that's the opening of hunting season.

Bells is a micro-brewery in Kalamazoo, MI. They make VERY good beer.

11/15 is opening day of gun season for deer hunters. The deer usually panic easily during this time and are more likely to run out across roadways. This is especially problematic during dawn and dusk. Remember that they usually travel together so if there is one, two or three are likely to follow.

One more helpful tip. When on ice, don't slam your brakes...Ease of the accelerator and stay calm.

The women in my family have lived here all their lives, and still can't grasp that simple concept.

Oh, one more important thing. You need to acclimate to the weather. We all do, every year. So on the first really cold day don't huddle inside. Instead go out in it. Get used to it. Embrace it. Before long it is feels fine. Really it does. Cold can be brisk. Energizing. Before long it is perfectly natural.

If you learn to dress for the weather and get used to it, it ain't no thing.

bells oberon is beer sent from the heavens. i love opening day of gun season because i get the steelhead fishing all to myself.
and dont be a fan of that washed up maize and blue football program.(no serious insult intended if you are coming up here to go to school, lol) but seriously, go green!
id warn you about bad drivers but half of floridas population is probably originally from michigan so you already know.

when you are settled in and ready for some disc golf dont be afraid to shoot me or many of these other guys a message, id be glad to show you around some courses.

Good advice.

Any outdoor/disc golf winter clothing recommendations?

Any outdoor/disc golf winter clothing recommendations?

That's a tough one...It really depends on the outside temperature and conditions. 25 and sunny feels a lot different than 35 and rainy. Frankly, 25 and sunny is a WAY more pleasant. This is why we all recommend dressing in layers. If you can afford it, performance wear geared toward keeping you dry is best for layers closest to your skin. Wool socks are awesome. Leather boots offer flexibility but will require more maintenance to keep them waterproof. Clothing for hunting is usually easy to find and is specially made for outdoor activities.

Notice a theme here? Dry = comfortable!

Frogtogg makes an excellent rain suit that also makes for a great windbreaker - at least mine does. Not the best for really cold temperatures. North Face makes some excellent outerwear and is quite popular - although I don't own any. Carhart also makes some great outdoor gear (albeit overpriced) that is really geared for farmers and construction workers so as a result is quite durable.

Hope that helps!

Year round seems like the right answer to me. ~_^

It's great to get out first after fresh snowfall, because you can generally see the exact track your disc left on the ground.

Of course, if we get another winter like this past one... You don't have a thing to worry about. I was out in jeans and a sweatshirt all through December/January. (Seriously, it hit 80 degrees by March. Wtf?!)

As nice as that was lets not do that again it caused TONS of problems for a lot of people.

You guys are gonna make me try Oberon again....Ive had it 3 times not and I just dont like it. Dont know why.

Get to know Shorts... learn to love Shorts.....

Obie is an american version of a german wheat (think blue moon).

Dg and beer is what the mitten is all about.
....At least youre coming to se michigan and not the boonies ;)

as far as Michigan breweries: Founder's is the best!
New Holland...The Poet alone wins the battle for them! As for discing, I just started playing this year and I plan to play as much as possible this winter. The poster who mentioned discs shattering did make me think...might be leaving my good discs at home when I play below freezing!

I moved from Michigan almost 15 years ago, and I haven't been able to go back since.

Without ever knowing it, I was in one of the best DG states in the country.

Enjoy your time in my beautiful home state.
