Selecting a disc basket for a new course

I've always pushed for discatchers at all the courses I've been involved with. One of the guys in our club got to talking with Schusterick, and that lead to us getting the new Prodigy baskets (Will said we were the first to get them shipped). These baskets are really stinking nice, as good a quality as the discatchers. We haven't gotten them installed yet, actually not even assembled (the University is having their logo added to them so they're still at the sign shop), so none of us have putted on them yet. The chain pattern looks pretty awesome.

Innova DISCatchers are Number One!

The Innova Discatcher is the most popular target in the world using the DGCR database. The PDGA Database also proves the DISCatcher target is number one and installed on more courses worldwide than any other brand. The data is very similar even though PDGA only lists 4709 courses compared with DGCR's list of 6548 courses.

As of 12/10/14 using the PDGA Course Database:

The PDGA lists 4709 courses worldwide and 1562 have DISCatcher targets or 33.2%. DGA is second with 1354.

Discatcher courses account for 33.2% of the total courses listed on PDGA and 32.3% on DGCR. DGA has 28.8% of the total on PDGA and 27.4% on DGCR.

Just to update

The Innova DISCatcher Target is still the most popular disc golf target in the world. The Innova DISCatcher is chosen more than any other brand for new course installations.

As of 12-5-2014 using the DGCR Database:

There are currently 6548 courses worldwide and 2112 have DISCatcher targets or 32.3%. DGA holds second place with 1797 courses.

The Innova DISCatcher target remains the top selling target for new course installations. Of the 3453 courses installed between 2007 and 2014, 1377 (or 39.9%) used Innova DISCatcher brand targets.

More annual course target data by year*:

2014 337 new courses, 132 DISCatcher ( 39.2 %)
2013 439 courses, 171 DISCatcher (39.0%)
2012 473 courses, 190 DISCatcher (40.2%)
2011 464 courses, 183 DISCatcher (39.4%)
2010 426 courses, 171 DISCatcher (40.1%)
2009 440 courses, 191 DISCatcher (43.4%)
2008 364 courses, 151 DISCatcher (41.5%)
2007 354 courses, 139 DISCatcher (39.3%)

(*Original data from DGCR 6/6/13 updated 12/5/14)

Are we reaching market saturation since new courses are trending on the decline since 2012's peak?

I think it may be due to the method of recording. New courses don't always get logged, and the PDGA tends to be a less popular place to register a new course these days. The 2014 data is also not finalized.

I wouldn't say it's trending down, Private courses are on the rise, and those don't always utilize permanent targets or approved manufacturer targets, which is where much of the data is coming from, I'd hazard a guess.

Innova DISCatchers are still number one

Time for an annual update

I believe I am going with Dynamic on the course I'm building.

Where I live in South Dakota the DGA models mostly newer Mach III models or Mach V are used but the second is the Innova DISCatcher models and third is other or Chainstar Pro as those are replacing the old Chainstar on lots of courses that hate them and they then scrap the old Chainstar baskets if they do not go to a beginner course in that town that needs actual baskets not homemade.

Doesen't seem like the ChainStar Pro has been as well received as Discraft might have hoped...

Probably going to take awhile for them to gain more popularity. I know locally here in Metro Detroit the Kensington courses now have them and rumor has it that Cass Benton (2000 worlds course) may soon get them too.

Either way, I don't think Discraft really loses any significant money regardless of how well they sell. There aren't any sunk costs involved, the baskets aren't perishable, and I would imagine there is at least some sort of just in time/supply chain production going on where it's not like they have thousands of them sitting around collecting dust.

I'd imagine at this point they're pretty good at forecast accounting and make what they can sell.

110 new course worldwide for the #1 Discatcher targets. That's best case 1,980 targets x $400 each = $792k revenue. At a (decent) margin of 20%, that's only $158k profit, a small drop in the bucket when compared with disc sales.

From what I can tell targets don't have a very good margin, 20% is just a swag and I'd be surprised if it was that high. The economies of scale just aren't there yet. This is why it's so hard to get any kind of discount from a manufacturer, despite almost all of the targets being manufactured overseas.

So course designers: don't plan on getting much of a discount on targets, they are already priced low and the competition is going to keep them low.

FYI - DISCatcher Pro 28 targets are only $325.00 each for course installations with 9 or more targets. This course discount is one reason the Innova DISCatcher remains the top selling target for course installations since 2007.
