southern wisconsin trip

Just a heads up on Birds Ruins.....

The reports I've read as of today 5-15-13, are that the course is closed due to heavy wind damage last night. It's been reported that the shelter was destroyed ( yikes ), trees are down and even tee signs have been damaged.

grrrrrr.....

is there a local club forum i can read to check up on the status of the course?

if it's not playable what would be a legit substitute for my first day? i'm thinking i'll hit 3 courses in madison on tuesday, so would the course in janesville be decent?

Here's what I got. Rebel Disc Golf Club is the group that put in the course and they have a Facebook page. I'm not on Facebook, but I'd guess that the most current info would be there.

Elver_Hiestand_Vallarta-Ast (aka Token Creek ) would be a good day with not much driving. Elver is on the SW side of Madison....from Elver take the Beltline East to Stoughton Road ( bout 5 miles ) take Stoughton Road North to Milwaukee Str and exit East. Couple blocks make a LEFT and you are at Hiestand. After playing Hiestand, go back to Stoughton Rd and go North another 6-7 miles. You'll go past the airport and then under the Interstate. Vallarta is in the Token Creek County Park 1/2 mile north of the Interstate. Its on the right just past a truck stop.

That's pretty much a full day of golf with a couple 15-20 minute drives between rounds.

I can't comment on Janesville...I haven't played there yet.

FYI....if you finish at Vallarta or Hiestand and you like beer.....The Ale Asylum has a nifty mega micro brewery halfway between Vallarta and Hiestand.

We (Mad City Disc Golf) try to keep up-to-date information about the status of local courses on our website at http://www.madcitydisc.org/openings--closings.html

We also post updates on Facebook, and monitor the pages of Marshall Parks & Rec and the Rebel Disc Golf Club:

I posted the update about the course and shelter damage on our sites after getting a call this morning from Marshall's Parks & Rec director. From what I heard, I would be surprised if the course is open next week when you are around. They have to take care of some serious safety hazards before they can even ask for volunteers to come help clean up.

Lustig Park in Janesville would be a good stop. Otherwise, you could play quick rounds at King Park in Milton (7 holes) and Ripley Park in Cambridge (9 holes) on your way to Firemen's and Rock River.

Bird's Ruins

I just played it yesterday, and the course is open (and aweome). It was a little wet due to recent rains, so bring some sandals or your prefered mud kickin' shoes. The recent rains also brought out the mosquitoes, so I suggest some bug spray. The open holes are bug free, but the holes near the river were infested.

I don't know how much driving you're limited to, but if you wanted to take the hour-ish drive from Madison, Waupun has a newer 9 holer that's REAL nice, and another 15-20 mins up the road is Zobel, which is probably the least used gem in Wisconsin, with LOTS of elevation, including a top-o'-the-world shot on 18. There's also Crystal Lake Park in Beaver Dam, which is a scenic, if not too difficult, 18 holes.

With that said, it's a pretty good haul from the Milwaukee/Madison area of the state, and would take up most of a day, although I've spent a full day at Zobel, and felt pretty damn good about it that night.
