fun rec course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 2, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Alt. Tee boxes offer a mix up for players. The tees themselves are deeply routed. But playable. The back nine tees are in pretty good condition. Baskets are pretty worn. The basket on hole 10 is crooked. I actually think it adds character to the course. The front nine is mostly open with a few trees surrounding the baskets. The back is moderately wooded with some plantation pines and a mix of hard wood trees and srubbs. The park is pretty clean. Benches at most holes. The park can be a little busy with players. So try to let those who are faster play thourgh. I had a lot of fun playing this course. I played all 18 from the pro tees. They are marked with red posts. The Amtr. Tees are marked with green posts. There are numbers on the posts. Parks offers other activities that might interest you. Course does have a course layout by the practice basket. Hole one os located torwards the middle of the park. The baskets you see when in the parking lot that are off to the right of the swimming pool are holes 14 16 and 17. Go left of thw swimming pool by the basketball court. There you will find hole 1. Or if the front nine looks busy, hole 9 is off to you right. When looking at the layout. Really nice rec. Course. Advanced players might enjoy something a little more difficult.

Cons:

Tee boxes are deeply routed. Some of the tee posts are rotten and fallen. Baskets are old. Not a lot of distance. Only obstacles on front nine are tress and they are mostly located near baskets. Pretty easy to drive up to them and then putt once or upshoot and putt for par.

Other Thoughts:

Back nine was the most fun. Almost had a skip ace on hole 10. Hole 16 was my favorite. I threw down the wooded and narrow fairway on the right from the red tee box and made it within 30ft of the pin! If the tee boxes were raked and flattened I would give this course a 3.5. If the baskets were newer on top of that and a little more distance on the front nine would make this an easy course to rate as a 4.

A Waterlogged Wonderland 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 25, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

With a professional feeling, a diverse design and a handful of pleasant intricacies going for it, Agnes Moffitt Park still falls short of "excellent" amongst finer offerings in the wide world of disc golf courses. That does not mean it is a poor course, it's just not the cream of the crop. It is a fun environment to trek through during a game of disc golf because the layout directs you in a wide, curving arc covering a lot of ground. Little pockets of different atmospheres break up the scenery - the front, middle and end of the course each have their own "feel". You start in a field dotted with tall, stately trees, but eventually weave your way into a tranquil forest-like clearing, and then round a corner into a wide open field near public swimming pool. The basket placements are strategic and there are even alternate "pro" tees at most (if not all) holes. But I could only find about 2/3 of them. It can take between 40 minutes to over an hour to play the full course, depending on the DG traffic and the size of your group.

Cons:

Stepping in water sucks. In the winter and spring of 2010, the ground was commonly soggy, holding enough water to create a handful of shallow pools. Many sunken marshy spots pop up in the middle of the park, and you may not see them until your disc or your foot accidentally lands on one. If you're new here, you'll spend a minute or two finding your pro or amateur sign posts and spotting the baskets ahead. It is a well-known fact that the course can get crowded, so arrive early or play during weekdays if you want to avoid peak times.

Other Thoughts:

There is a restroom near the parking lot, a couple benches throughout the course and a handful of trash barrels. The trees come into play very well, and the am/pro tee pads are a nice touch.

In summation, if the tee boxes were not rutted out, and if the shallow water puddles that can pop up in the spring and winter were cleared up, Agnes Moffitt could easily climb its way to a 4.5 star course. Concrete tee pads (which may be in the near future) would top it off nicely. Still, Big Agnes is a solid 18-hole course for the Houston area.

Pros:

I believe this is one of the original disc golf courses in the Houston area and is still very popular. It is a great place to meet experienced players and learn a few things. Despite being very flat this course is very fun to play.

Cons:

Flat, not many hazards, homeless man living in woods is a little creepy, tee pads are more like sand boxes.

Other Thoughts:

Great place to bring players that are new to the game.

Agnes Moffit, Houston TX 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 13, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Bathrooms, ease of use, alternate tee pads, benches on every hole.

Cons:

Crowded.

Other Thoughts:

This park is flat with mature trees and foliage surrounded by a school, houses and high volume roadways. Within the park are basketball courts, a playground and community swimming/rec area. This is a busy park because of the aforementioned attributes. Parking is ample. A bulletin board at hole one shows the basic layout of the course, hole nine loops back to hole one if you only want to play nine holes. Tee pads are sandy dirt, and very unstable. Tee signs are stakes in the ground giving only distance. Alternate tee pads are in the same condition, and sometimes hard to find. Course design takes into account the trees and the boundaries of the park to improve the technical level at the same time not being overly restrictive with obstacles and pin placement. Average hole length on the short tee pads is 250-350 feet, the alternate tee pads stretch the course out 300-400 feet per hole on average.
Amateur disc golfers will like this course the most. Its not super long, its not super technical, and it doesn't have any unreasonable tee shots only pros would like. Maybe that's why its so popular and crowded. A very forgiving disc golf course with a very high fun-factor for beginners, intermediate, and advanced players. Pro players may get bored with this course after a few times out. Maybe not. As a recreational course its outstanding, not sure how it would stand up to tournament play, probably a birdie-fest for pros. Because of the high volume of players, the tee pads show their wear, and the areas around the baskets. The course is fairly clean for all the people playing, garbage cans on the course were full when I was there but nothing on the ground to speak of.
This course is where I would want to get together with a group of friends and play some great casual golf. You could spend an entire day like that here and have an awesome time. Just don't take this course too seriously and it can be all you want it to be.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice mix of L-R and R-L holes. Decent distance on backside, less so on frontside but that make for a bunch of ace runs. Good vibes out there, always a good time at the MOFF.

Cons:

Loud near holes 14,15,16,17 - makes it hard to hear my tunes. Built a new school behind holes 1, 2 ,3, 4 so it doesnt feel as wooded as before. Can get very busy!!!

Other Thoughts:

Moffit gets a lot of heat. But there is no course in Houston that gets more play, and can appeal to such a wide variety of amateur players (which is 99% of us) Moffit will always have its place in the Houston DG community -

Fun Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 8, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fairly easy to navigate this course if you have a basic sense of distance as the tees all point at the basket. Tees were all fairly easy to find with no map. Two sets of tees that give you slightly different looks at the baskets. There's a good mix of medium length and short holes. Only one hole over 350 from the "green" tees, and only one over 400 from the red tees. Most holes have trees strategically placed in between the tee and basket but can't recall any hole that just didn't have a line. The part of the park that the course is on is supposed to be only dg-ers but you will have the occasional dog walker. Pretty good parking, I've never had to wait on a spot or park somewhere else. There is a practice basket right by the sign for the course and by 1's tee box. There are actually scorecards in the scorecard box which is nice. They have maps on the back but you may not need one.

Cons:

TEE BOXES- These have to be some of the worst boxes that I've thrown from. They are a mix of gravel and dirt that has holes at the end of the box from years of run-ups. Some of them you can throw from the side and some it's almost as unpleasant to do that. This course loses a lot of points because of the boxes. If the boxes were in better shape I'd probably play this course a couple times a week (it takes me about 25-30 min. to drive to it so I think that says a lot).

Other Thoughts:

I only go in the mornings and play this course once every couple of weeks and there are usually a few others playing. I can't speak for how crowded it gets in the afternoons or weekends. Plenty of birdie holes on this course and you should be able to shoot a relatively good score. Would recommend this course to anyone who's looking for a fun semi-challenging course. If you play from the back tees it gives you a different look on most holes and adds a little length. There is also a baseball field right beside #1 that makes for a nice "driving range". I would say depending on the direction you throw you have plenty of room to throw out to about 500' or so, so most of us will have plenty of room. Fun course that you should play at least once.

Pros:

Nice open course, with some grip it and rip it holes. No real tunnel shots, but placement of trees and bushes on the course due require at least basic needle threading ability. Overall the course is a decent recreational course but not a serious challenge. Disc Golf course is well taken care of with minimal trash or graffiti.

Cons:

Gravel Tee boxes (lots of slipping and sliding when performing a runup.) The course was clean but the surrounding park is full of trash and graffiti. Hole 17 was muddy even after several days of sun.

Other Thoughts:

Course is in serious need of concrete tee pads or at the very least packed dirt.

Like an old friend 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It has a number of nice features. The baskets are yellow and easy to see. There are some trees, but everything has a pretty good line to the basket. Every hole is a reasonable distance which makes it a great place to take beginners to learn how to play. It will challenge people who are getting started and be an enjoyable round for those that have played for a while. There are lots of birdie and ace chances with only a small chance of losing discs.

The course gets a LOT of traffic so you can always find someone to play with (but can also be very crowded sometimes). It has a pretty strong league going on Thursday nights.

Cons:

The teeboxes are horrible. One day maybe the parks and rec gods will drop concrete on this course and it would be a huge upgrade. Until then just try to find a safe spot to throw from. There is little risk/reward. Even if you make a bad throw you can recover pretty easily (although this might be a pro for some people).

It can also be VERY bad after a big rain as the course holds a lot of water.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course for a fun round of disc golf. I use to play this course a lot when I was learning and recently haven't played it as much. I played it again last week for the first time in like 7 months and it was like getting together with an old friend. Very comfortable and easy.

18 holes with some good challenges. Nice tee posts and a decent course flow. Not too hard, so you feel like an accomplished player after a round at Agnes Moffitt : )

Cons:

Be careful after recent rain. The course can easily hold lots of water, even after several days. Depending on the last upkeep, the tee boxes can be awful- more like uneven trenches. This can easily throw off your drive.

The Best on the West 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is a west Houston staple and is probably one the areas most played courses. On any given day one is bound to find at least 10 people playing this course. It has a good variety of holes for righties and lefties and alternate tee positions that actually provide different angles of attack, creating basically two courses in one. The park for the most part is well kept although you will catch the occasional bum sleeping by a teebox from time to time. There are a few little spots to sit but some of the picnic tables that were in the park have now been removed. Pretty much anyone can play this course with the longest hole being maybe 400 feet.

Cons:

The worst and I mean the worst teeboxes I have ever played. Maybe I'm a little biased since I've seen more then one friend sprain an ankle or pull a hammy there. But seriously the city of Houston needs to do something about them. If your playing the course play from behind or to the side of them, just don't risk it. There can be, at times, the element of pot smokers at this park and even though it is a somewhat accepted part of playing DG, to some, like myself it can be a little annoying at times. Just be aware.

Other Thoughts:

This course to me could be so much better if it had good tees, possibly even a four, considering it is actually two courses in one. But without them it really drags this course down IMO. That being said I play this course a lot and I still love old Agnes, I don't think I've ever had a bad time there and for the west side its the only 18 hole show around.

B = Be a little too open and a little too bland 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2007 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward. Fair, but harsh punishment for bad decisions or execution. == C-
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities for me. I throw 300' accurately, 360' max. == B+
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography == B
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion. == C
5) Bonus points for multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them. == N/A

Other Thoughts:

It's all about feeding the addiction, so I ranked this course subjectively based on my own "personal addiction factor". The grades above tell how well the course will draw me back to itself again and again and again. Since I have played a decent number of courses (125 18-hole, 64 9-hole as of mid 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar addiction tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they choose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I can add anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me....that's the fun of things here. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

18 holes tightly packed. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 3, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I now work in this area so I'm out playing this course more often now. Moffitt is a decent 18 hole course that makes good use of the park's trees and landscaping. It is the tightest 18 hole course I've played and that makes it challenging.

Cons:

The baskets are often too close together so if your drives aren't straight you will end up on another fairway or green. I've heard 600 people play this course a week and I can believe it. Often this course is packed with people after work and you're either rushed by the people behind you or waiting on the group in front. Plus, with that much traffic,, the grass is non-existent on many fairways and the Tee boxes can be downright dangerous.

On hoo-boy this course is flat.

Other Thoughts:

This course needs some TLC from the city. It needs new Tee boxes and better signage.

Low Traffic Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played the course at 5:00pm on a Saturday and it was not very busy at all. The baskets are all out in the open and open fairways allow you just to grip and rip on drives. Some of the advanced tee boxes force you to take an accurate shot through narrow lanes. The "A" box at 16 also provide a cool high hyzer shot over fairly tall trees. The "A" boxes are marked with a BROWN post sticking out of the ground and "B" boxes are marked with a green post sticking out of the ground. A good mix of short (<300 ) and long (300 +) holes, but nothing over 400.

Cons:

The "A" box and "B" box colors of 11 are the opposite colors from the rest of the course. The "A" box for 17 is back in the woods and can be found if you follow the small foot path directly behind the "B" box. In middle section of the course (holes 7-14) there are a lot of parallel fairways that may create a lot of opportunities to hit people for those of us who are less accurate with our throws.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a good course for anyone who likes playing the game.

Play this course if you play Houston 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 11, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Wide open spaces making it almost impossible to lose a disc. Two distinct tee boxes for 17 of the holes. I couldn't locate one of the advanced tees. Not terribly difficult for the majority of the holes. The main obstacle for most is a tree or 4 to throw around. I like the few holes where you throw out from the tree line. 16 I think is pretty cool since you have a really narrow window to throw through a stand of trees. The other tee box has you throwing around it. At times there are a few baskets visible from the box, however the one with the number visible is the target. I liked that feature. Definitely worth playing.

Cons:

Flat, hot and humid in the summer with little shade available. You may have to fight for parking on weekends, considering the Bball court nearby. People wander around the course. I almost tagged some guy talking on his cell phone, that was oblivious to his surroundings. The course holds water after a rainstorm. Bring a towel!

This course is a staple for the Houston disc golf scene. Play it at least once!

Wide open fun. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 26, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good flat course that is open and great for bringing out first time golfers. The alternate tees provide some extra distance and challenge to holes like 9 that was an easy birdie to solid par. My scores have ranged from 5-6 under on the regular tees to 6-8 over on the alternates, so the challenge variation is nice.

This is a type of course you want to play when you want to work on your techniques without sacrificing your discs.

Parking is good, and the amount of cars can be deceptive since there is a heavily used BB court.

There is a practice hole and the course baskets are DisCatcher, which make it easier to spot for a first timer.

BEST HOLE/S: #15; #16

Cons:

No real O.B. like water, and absolutely no elevation changes, but the biggest gripe is that the tee boxes are horrible. We play the alternates or the grass behind the box mostly just to not have to deal with the dirt divots. After a heavy rain the course retains a lot of water for a good week or more.

On a high wind day (usually winter time), the front 9 sucks, but the back is fairly sheltered. A first time golfer might get confused by the layout, (really if they play alternates - pay attention to hole 4), but there is a map on one.

WORST HOLE/S: #3

Other Thoughts:

This course is like comfort food. I really had my start on it and come back to time and time again when I want to work on my shot, change a disc, or haven't played for a while. With concrete boxes it would be fantastic.

There is a school being built behind the front nine, so sometimes it'll carry the dust.
